Physical appearance anxiety impedes the therapeutic effects of video feedback in high socially anxious individuals.

BACKGROUND: Video feedback (VF) interventions effectively reduce social anxiety symptoms and negative self-perception, particularly when they are preceded by cognitive preparation (CP) and followed by cognitive review. AIMS: In the current study, we re-examined data from a study on the efficacy of a novel VF intervention for individuals high in social anxiety to test the hypothesis that physical appearance anxiety would moderate the effects of VF. METHOD: Data were analyzed from 68 socially anxious participants who performed an initial public speech, and were randomly assigned to an Elaborat

Child health and its effect on adult social capital accumulation.

Although studies have demonstrated important effects of poor health in childhood on stocks of human and health capital, little research has tested economic theories to investigate the effect of child health on social capital in adulthood. Studies on the influence of child health on adult social capital are mixed and have not used sibling fixed effects models to account for unmeasured family and genetic characteristics, that are likely to be important. Using the Add-Health sample, health in childhood was assessed as self-rated health, the occurrence of a physical health condition or mental heal

The influences of virtual social feedback on social anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Social feedback in the virtual environment is a critical part of successful virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), and identifying the influences of virtual social feedback on social anxiety patients is necessary. AIMS: The present study aimed to explore the influences of ambiguous and negative virtual social feedback on social anxiety patients and a health control group (HCG). METHOD: Twenty-six social anxiety patients and 26 healthy participants were recruited. All participants were exposed to a virtual public speaking scenario. The participants were required to make two 3-mi

Resisting with purpose: Critical consciousness and solidary-driven resistance in health professions education.

Building on Ellaway and Wyatt's commentary, we discuss the role of critical consciousness, the reflective awareness of social, cultural, and power structures that shape practice, in fostering resistance that remains faithful to the core values of the profession. We argue that legitimate professional resistance requires an orientation toward transforming the social and structural conditions that produce inequality and harm.

Social Contact Reinforces Cocaine Self-Administration in Young Adult Male Rats: The Role of Social Reinforcement in Vulnerability to Drug Use.

Drug-using peers are recognized as a leading factor influencing drug use among adolescents and young adults. One mechanism by which peers influence drug use is by providing social reinforcement for using drugs. Social reinforcement may be provided in multiple ways, including by making social contact contingent on drug use (i.e., an individual must use drugs to gain/maintain access to a peer). The purpose of this study was to develop a preclinical model in which intravenous cocaine self-administration was positively reinforced by access to a social partner. Young adult male rats were trained to

Obesity and Intersectionality: Brazil's Experience in Advancing Equity through Transformative Public Policies.

Obesity and food and nutrition insecurity are increasingly understood as syndemic outcomes of enduring social inequalities. In Brazil, these conditions disproportionately affect Black women in socially vulnerable contexts, due to the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, and low socioeconomic status. In response, Brazil has launched the new Intersectoral Strategy for Obesity Prevention, which frames obesity as a multidetermined condition shaped by social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors. Grounded in intersectionality and rights-based governance, the Strategy is structured aroun

Development and validation of the socio-evaluative N-back task to investigate the impact of acute social stress on working memory.

Impaired working memory in response to social-evaluative stress might be a central cognitive mechanism underlying the persistence of mental health difficulties such as social anxiety. To investigate this, we developed the Socio-evaluative N-back Task (SENT), which can measure the impact of acute socio-evaluative stress on working memory (WM) performance. Moreover, we tested the SENT in a stratified sample with high (HSA) and low socially anxious (LSA) individuals (HSA = 30, LSA = 27, N = 57). Of the highly anxious individuals, thirteen were diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD). The soc

Dissociating the role of endocannabinoids in the pleasurable and motivational properties of social play behaviour in rats.

Social play behaviour is a vigorous form of social interaction, abundant during the juvenile and adolescent phases of life in many mammalian species, including humans. Social play is highly rewarding and it is important for social and cognitive development. Being a rewarding activity, social play can be dissociated in its pleasurable and motivational components. We have previously shown that endocannabinoids modulate the expression of social play behaviour in rats. In the present study, we investigated whether endocannabinoids modulate the motivational and pleasurable properties of social play

Social anxiety disorder: comorbidity and its implications.

Social anxiety disorder is an extremely common and potentially disabling psychiatric disorder. Generalized social anxiety disorder, a subtype of the disorder, is believed to be the most common and most severe form. It is also the form that is most often associated with other psychiatric disorders. Unless the clinician has a high index of suspicion, social anxiety disorder may remain undetected. The clinical and treatment implications of the most common psychiatric comorbidities associated with social anxiety disorder are discussed in this article, with a focus on major depression, panic disord

Social anxiety and post-event processing among African-American individuals.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is among the most prevalent psychiatric conditions, yet little attention has been paid to whether putative cognitive vulnerability factors related to social anxiety in predominantly White samples are related to social anxiety among historically underrepresented groups. DESIGN: We tested whether one such vulnerability factor, post-event processing (PEP; detailed review of social event that can increase state social anxiety) was related to social anxiety among African-American (AA; n = 127) persons, who comprise one of the largest underrepresented racial groups in the

Salivary cortisol reactivity to social rejection in a simulated video conference: Findings from the O-Cam paradigm.

Social rejection represents a social stressor with well-documented psychological effects, yet biological stress responses have been examined mostly with paradigms of limited ecological validity. This study investigated psychobiological reactions to social rejection using the O-Cam paradigm, a simulated video-conference designed to mirror contemporary social interactions with higher ecological validity. Eighty-four participants were randomly assigned to experience either social rejection or social inclusion during a prerecorded web-conference with two peers. Following the interaction, participa

Role of NMDA and AMPA glutamatergic receptors in the effects of social defeat on the rewarding properties of MDMA in mice.

Exposure to social stress alters the response to drugs of abuse of experimental animals. Changes in the glutamatergic system seem to play a role in the effects of social defeat stress on the rewarding properties of cocaine and amphetamine. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the involvement of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) glutamate receptors in the effects of social defeat on the conditioned place preference induced by 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Our hypothesis was that changes in these receptors could mediat

The Differential Effects of Public and Private Active Social Media Use on Adolescents' Well-Being: Insights from a Cross-Sectional and Experimental Study.

While existing research on active social media use and well-being has yielded inconsistent findings, this study introduces a refined typology distinguishing between public (e.g., posting broadly on social networks) and private (e.g., one-on-one messaging) active use to clarify these effects. It further examines the moderating role of perceived online social support. Study 1 (N = 689) used a cross-sectional survey design to analyze the relationships among public versus private active social media use, perceived online social support, and well-being in a population of Chinese adolescents. Understanding the Intersection Between Racial Segregation, Social Isolation and Safety Perceptions on Health for an Economically Disadvantaged Urban Community.

Safety concerns continue to be challenging amid racially segregated communities of urban concentrated disadvantage. Although contributing factors to crime in such neighborhoods have been described, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how social isolation and perceptions of safety impact community health. This qualitative study explored how minoritized residents (N = 23) from an urban community of economic disadvantage perceived the influence of environmental and residential conditions on their health. Use of the grounded theory method produced conceptual insights into the process of how saf

Reduced contagious yawning in psychiatric disorders: a systematic review of potential social-cognitive mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Contagious yawning has been proposed to reflect multiple aspects of social cognition, including empathy, emotional contagion, self-processing, Theory of Mind (ToM), and action observation mechanisms such as the human mirror neuron system (hMNS). However, its underlying mechanisms remain debated, with evidence suggesting additional roles for social attention, gaze allocation, social motivation, and neurobiological factors. This systematic review examined evidence for reduced contagious yawning in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and psychopathic tr

Peer presence and familiarity as key factors to reduce cocaine intake in both rats and humans: an effect mediated by the subthalamic nucleus.

RATIONALE: Stimulant use, including cocaine, often occurs in a social context whose influence is important to understand to decrease intake and reduce associated harms. Although the importance of social influence in the context of drug addiction is known, there is a need for studies assessing its neurobiological substrate and for translational research. OBJECTIVES: Here, we explored the influence of peer presence and familiarity on cocaine intake and its neurobiological basis. Given the regulatory role of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) on cocaine intake and emotions, we investigated its role o

The social ecology of childhood and early life adversity.

An increasing prevalence of early childhood adversity has reached epidemic proportions, creating a public health crisis. Rather than focusing only on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as the main lens for understanding early childhood experiences, detailed assessments of a child's social ecology are required to assess "early life adversity." These should also include the role of positive experiences, social relationships, and resilience-promoting factors. Comprehensive assessments of a child's physical and social ecology not only require parent/caregiver surveys and clinical observations, b

We are at Full Capacity": Social care workers persisting through work-related stress in a new immigrant settlement context in the United States.

Cities without a prior established history of Latina/o migration are experiencing the fastest rate of growth in new immigrants in the United States (Wainer, A tale of two cities (and a town): Immigrants in the Rust Belt, 2013; Lichter & Johnson, Immigrant gateways and Hispanic migration to new destinations. International Migration Review, 43, 496, 2009). These new immigrant settlement cities experience the challenge of adapting their social care context to become more responsive to the needs of immigrants. Yet as cities and social care organisations struggle to keep up with the "lag" time in t

The relationship between social support and anxiety among caregivers of children in HIV-endemic South Africa.

Caring for children can be a source of joy and fulfilment, but also a source of stress, especially for caregivers living with illness and/or coping with difficult socio-economic conditions. Risks for poor caregiver mental health are especially salient in many parts of southern Africa affected by a generalised HIV-epidemic, high rates of physical illness, difficult livelihood conditions and an increasing number of orphaned and vulnerable children in need of care. Given limited availability and low uptake of formal mental health services in South Africa, the potential protective role of informal
