Termites live in dense colonies where frequent social contact can facilitate pathogen transmission, but coordinated social immunity can also limit disease spread. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are particularly relevant to termite pathology because they infect primarily through the cuticle, using adhesion, enzymatic degradation, penetration, and internal proliferation to overcome host barriers. This review synthesizes current knowledge on EPF virulence in termites and argues that fungal pathogenicity should be understood not only as direct toxicity (lethal effects of pathogen-derived compounds)

Competition is an essential component of social interaction and is influenced by interpersonal relationships. This study is based on social exchange theory and explores the relationship between brain synchronization and competition in the binary system of romantic relationships through electroencephalogram hyperscanning technology. The results found that females had a greater win rate in the romantic and friend groups. During the early stage (0-200 ms), when the competitive target appeared, the stranger group exhibited greater interbrain synchronicity in the Alpha frequency band. However, duri…

Contagious diseases are a major threat to societies in which individuals live in close contact. Social insects have evolved collective defense behaviors, such as social care or isolation of infected workers, that prevent outbreaks of pathogens. It has thus been suggested that individual immunity is reduced in species with such 'social immunity'. However, this hypothesis has not been tested functionally. Here, we characterize the immune response of the ant Lasius niger using a combination of genomic analysis, experimental infections, gene expression quantification, behavioural observations and

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia show abnormal gaze processing, which is associated with social dysfunction. These abnormalities are related to aberrant connectivity among brain regions that are associated with visual processing, social cognition, and cognitive control. In this study, we investigated 1) how effective connectivity during gaze processing is disrupted in schizophrenia and 2) how this may contribute to social dysfunction and clinical symptoms.
METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (SZ) and 33 healthy control participants completed an eye

OBJECTIVE: Insurers frequently commission medical experts to estimate the degree of the remaining work capacity (RWC) in claimants for disability benefits. The social functioning scale Mini-ICF-APP allows for a rating of activity and participation limitations in thirteen capacity domains, considered as particularly relevant for work ability. The current study sought to evaluate the role of the Mini-ICF-APP ratings in psychiatric work disability evaluations, by examining how the capacity limitation ratings varied with the claimants' primary psychiatric diagnoses and how the ratings were related

BACKGROUND: Few studies have looked at the very long-term outcome of individuals with autism who were diagnosed in childhood.
METHODS: A lo … classical and atypical autism groups were fairly homogeneously impaired in terms of symptoms in the social interaction category whereas other common childhood autism symptoms, including maladaptive and stereotyped behaviours, were more variable in the study group at follow-up. Odd responses to sensory stimuli were still extremely common. Speech before 5 years of age …

Previous cross-sectional studies suggest that birth weight (BW) is associated with aggression-, social- and attention problems differently in boys and girls. We sought to test if these differences could be confirmed in a longitudinal study. The 1989 Raine Study provided prospectively collected data on perinatal variables and repeated child behaviour checklist assessments from ages 5 to 17. Linear mixed effects models provided crude and adjusted relationships between BW and childhood behaviour at a conservative significance threshold using prenatal maternal covariables in adjusted models. Sensi

Time-honored brands, as carriers of cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship, face significant challenges in achieving sustainable development in the digital era. With the rapid growth of e-commerce live streaming and the increasing dominance of younger consumers, how these brands can effectively engage youth segments and enhance brand identification has become a critical issue. Drawing on the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) framework and brand authenticity theory, this study examines the mechanisms through which product interaction and interpersonal interaction influence young consume

The involvement of oxytocin in social behavior is well established, yet its interaction with neuromodulatory systems, such as serotonin and … paminergic neurons in dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). Blocking oxytocin receptors in the DRN attenuated social interaction behavior. Additionally, analysis of c-Fos levels and neuronal excitability revealed that oxytocin inhibits serotonergic neurons while activating dopaminergic neurons in the DRN. Our findings suggest a bidirectional regulatory role of oxytocin signal …

Social experiences can profoundly shape emotional regulation and promote resilience to stress. Although the presence of companions is well-known to buffer the impact of stress in humans and rodents1-5, whether and how social interactions restore the disruptions in reward processing commonly produced by stress remains unknown. Here, we developed a reward-based behavioral paradigm to study social buffering. Brief interaction with a familiar, unstressed partner following acute restraint stress restored reward-seeking behavior in both female and male C57BL6/J mice. Our findings indicate that buffe…

OBJECTIVE: To examine the reliability and validity of a new observational measure of parental scaffolding, as well as the impact of parental scaffolding on academic and social outcomes among youth with spina bifida (SB).
METHODS: As part of a larger study, 137 families of youth with SB participated in family interaction tasks and self-report questionnaires at the baseline assessment. Teachers also reported on youth's academic independence and competence, as well as social skills. Guided by previous research and theoretical formulations, a rational approach to measure development was employed

We previously reported that chronic administration of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists reduced the density of vasopressin V1a receptors in several brain regions in rats that demonstrated social interaction deficits and increased locomotor activity. These observations indicate the ability of arginine-vasopressin (AVP), or its analogues, to modulate behavioral abnormalities associated with blockade of NMDA receptors. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of NC-1900, an AVP analogue, on social behavior and locomotor activity in rats treated with MK-801, a non-competitiv…

Previous studies have found that social anxiety and experiential avoidance (EA) are significantly associated, but the directionality of this relationship has not been firmly established. The present study examined momentary EA and social anxiety using repeated measurements during an opposite-sex interaction. Participants were 164 individuals (50% female): 42 were diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and the remaining 122 were non-socially-anxious individuals (NSAs). Participants formed 42 experimental dyads including 1 individual with SAD and 1 NSA individual, and 40 control dyads incl

Naturalistic playground observations are a rich source of information when studying the social interactions of preschool children. On the playground, children can interact with their peers, explore different places and activities, and engage in different types of play. For deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children, interactions at a playground can be more difficult because of the large number of auditory stimuli surrounding them. Constraints in the access to the social world on the playground might hamper DHH children's interactions with their typically hearing (TH) peers, activities, and play. …

OBJECTIVES: Incarceration is associated with adverse mental and physical health outcomes that are exacerbated during the post-release period. Social contact with loved ones during imprisonment-such as in-person visits, phone calls, and written correspondence-may play a key role in mitigating the health consequences of incarceration and promoting health upon release. The current study assesses how social contact during incarceration may mitigate health issues during the reentry period.
STUDY DESIGN: The study uses data from a sample of 475 men incarcerated in Texas prisons interviewed prior to

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates how perceived control shapes immersion in AI chatbot interaction through psychological distance. Drawing on psychological distance theory, we distinguish perceived interaction control, defined as users' perceived control over conversational flow, from perceived content control, defined as users' perceived control over generated content. We further examine how these two forms of perceived control contribute to reducing temporal, spatial, and social psychological distance in AI chatbot interaction.
METHODS: Survey data were collected from 338 AI chatbot use
