Child maltreatment in the "Children of the Nineties:" deprivation, class, and social networks in a UK sample.

AIM: To determine risk factors for child maltreatment within the socio-economic environment of a contemporary UK child population. METHODS: The research is based on a large cohort study, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Out of 14256 children participating in the study, 115 have been identified as having been placed on local child protection registers prior to their 6th birthday. Data on the socio-economic environment of the families have been obtained from a series of questionnaires administered during pregnancy and the first 3 years of life. Risk factors have been analyze

Contextualizing the adolescent social brain: Links to social health using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Social health, defined as adequate quantity and quality of social relationships (Doyle & Link, 2024), is essential for human well-being. The social brain, a network of regions involved in social cognition, ostensibly facilitates social health; however, few studies assess how social brain function relates to different profiles of social health. We tested this association during early adolescence when close relationships with peers gain increased importance. We used baseline (8- to 11-years old) brain data and year 2 (10- to 13-years old) social health data from 5832 adolescents in the Adolescen

Validation and reliability of the Chinese version of the Friendship Scale (FS-C) in family caregivers of people with severe mental illness.

Social isolation has been shown to contribute to negative health outcomes. Within a Chinese cultural context where people highly value social relationships, family caregivers of people with severe mental illness are prone to experience social isolation due to demanding caregiving tasks and prevalent social stigma. However, an instrument that could comprehensively measure social isolation in Chinese family caregivers is lacking. The six-item Friendship Scale was designed to measure social isolation but it has not previously been validated for use in the Chinese context. This study aimed to asse

Reducing Social Media Use Decreases Depression Symptoms: A Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials.

The association between social media use and depression found in correlational research has prompted widespread concern regarding the consequences of social media use. In response to this evidence, experimental interventions have been used to evaluate whether lowering social media use affects depression. This meta-analysis synthesised results of 10 randomized controlled trials (N = 1491) to assess the effect of limiting or refraining from social media use on severity of depressive symptoms. Studies were included if they were randomized control trials involving reducing or eliminating use of so

Network Strategies in Municipal Health Promotion: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Municipal health promotion increasingly relies on intersectoral networks to address complex health challenges amid fragmented health, social and educational systems. However, little is known about how practitioners navigate these networks or how perceived strategies correspond with observed network structures. This convergent mixed-methods study involved 14 health professionals and combined qualitative interviews with egocentric network analysis. Interview data were analysed using deductive content analysis, while the quantitative component comprised descriptive network analysis based on struc

Spatio-temporal dynamics of kind versus hostile intentions in the human brain: An electrical neuroimaging study.

Neuroscience research suggests that inferring neutral intentions of other people recruits a specific brain network within the inferior fronto-parietal action observation network as well as a putative social network including brain areas subserving theory of mind, such as the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), and also the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Recent studies on harmful intentions have refined this network by showing the specific involvement of the ACC, amygdala, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in early stages (within 200 ms) of

Interpersonal neural synchrony across levels of interpersonal closeness and social interactivity.

Interpersonal neural synchrony is a fundamental aspect of social interactions, offering insights into the neural mechanisms underlying human connection and developmental outcomes. So far, hyperscanning studies have examined synchrony across different dyads and tasks, leading to inconsistencies in experimental findings and limiting cross-study comparability. This variability has posed challenges for building a unified theoretical framework for neural synchrony. This study investigated the effects of interpersonal closeness and social interactivity on neural synchrony using functional near-infra

Social defeat stress causes depression-like behavior with metabolite changes in the prefrontal cortex of rats.

Major depressive disorder is a serious mental disorder with high morbidity and mortality. The role of social stress in the development of depression remains unclear. Here, we used the social defeat stress paradigm to induce depression-like behavior in rats, then evaluated the behavior of the rats and measured metabolic changes in the prefrontal cortex using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Within the first week after the social defeat procedure, the sucrose preference test (SPT), open field test (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM) and forced swim test (FST) were conducted to examine the depre

Friendship networks of inner-city adults: a latent class analysis and multi-level regression of supporter types and the association of supporter latent class membership with supporter and recipient drug use.

BACKGROUND: Social support is a multi-dimensional construct that is important to drug use cessation. The present study identified types of supportive friends among the social network members in a community-based sample and examined the relationship of supporter-type classes with supporter, recipient, and supporter-recipient relationship characteristics. We hypothesized that the most supportive network members and their support recipients would be less likely to be current heroin/cocaine users. METHODS: Participants (n=1453) were recruited from low-income neighborhoods with a high prevalence o

Constructing Taxonomies: Identifying Distinctive Class of HIV Support and Risk Networks among People Who Use Drugs (PWID) and Their Network Members in the HPTN 037 Randomized Controlled Trial.

Injection drug use is a significant mode of HIV transmission. Social networks are potential avenues for behavior change among high-risk populations. Increasing knowledge should include a classification or taxonomy system of networks' attributes, risks, and needs. The current study employed 232 networks comprising 232 indexes, with 464 network members enrolled in Philadelphia. LCA revealed a three-class solution, Low-Risk, Paraphernalia Risk, and High Sex/Moderate Paraphernalia Risk class, among participants. The analysis found receiving money or drugs for sex and employment status increased th
