Association between walkability and diverse health metrics: moderating role of social vulnerability.

Little research has considered associations between walkability and multiple health outcomes and the moderating effect of social determinants of health. This study examined relationships between walkability and diverse health issues (depression, poor mental health, poor physical health, mobility disability, obesity) and no leisure-time physical activity and whether these relationships were moderated by social vulnerability. Then, we assessed whether these moderated effects varied between urbanicity. For 1089 census tracts in South Carolina, we compiled EPA National Walkability Index, 6 health

Assessing social support in older adults with cognitive disorders living in institutions.

OBJECTIVES: Although social support is a major dimension of well-being, there is a lack of appropriate tools to assess it in older adults with neurocognitive disorders. This study aims to provide a validation of an adapted version of the Perceived Social Support Questionnaire (PSSQ) for this population. A secondary objective was to investigate whether psychosocial and cognitive outcomes varied according to the category of persons perceived as available (family, professionals, friends, residents). METHOD: 113 nursing home residents with neurocognitive disorders were administered the adapted PS

Validation of the Chinese Social Constraints Scale Among Malaysian Chinese Postpartum Mothers.

BACKGROUND: In Chinese and collectivist cultures, discussing personal feelings is often considered inappropriate or discouraged, even for postpartum mothers. As a self-reported measure of social responses that inhibit the expression of stressful thoughts, feelings, and experiences, the Social Constraints Scale has been widely validated among cancer and bereaved populations, leaving postpartum mothers unattended. METHODS: This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Social Constraints Scale (C-SCS) among Chinese postpartum women in Malaysia. A cross-sect

Evaluation of a parent preference-based outcome measure after intensive communication intervention for children with social (pragmatic) communication disorder and high-functioning autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children with Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder (SPCD) or High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD) have persistent deficits in language structure and language use (pragmatics). This feasibility study evaluated a novel parent preference-based outcome measure and secondary outcomes associated with the Social Communication Intervention Programme (SCIP). METHODS: 15 UK speech and language practitioners identified 20 children aged 5-11 years with pragmatics/language needs. Practitioners received SCIP training and supervision. Children received 20 SCIP therap

Valproic acid exposure impairs ultrasonic communication in infant, adolescent and adult rats.

Persistent deficits of social communication are a hallmark of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Communication disabilities can be experimentally modeled using rodents' ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). Although prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is one of the most widely used animal models of ASD, little is known about communication impairments in this model. We performed a longitudinal study to characterize VPA-induced socio-communicative deficits in male and female rats. USVs were recorded in neonatal rats during maternal separation, in adolescent rats during social play, and in adult ra

Mental health care access among Latinx and Indigenous Mexican immigrants in rural desert communities in the COVID-19 pandemic: a community-engaged study.

BACKGROUND: Structural and social inequities greatly impacted the mental and physical health of Latinx and Indigenous Mexican populations Hispanic/Latino immigrants in rural communities in the COVID-19 pandemic. These populations experienced disproportionate infection and mortality rates, exacerbated by existing structural and social inequities, creating unique stressors that negatively impacted community members' mental health. Limited financial resources, lack of healthcare infrastructure, fear of deportation, and stigma shaped decisions to access mental healthcare services. The historical e

Children's explanations for success shape implicit bias.

Children's social preferences often mirror societal hierarchies, favoring higher-status and more successful groups. How children explain why some groups succeed while others do not may contribute to the development of these preferences. Attributing disparities to internal factors, such as effort or ability, risks instilling bias, whereas recognizing structural differences in access to opportunity may mitigate it. Across two studies, we examined children's reasoning about internal and structural explanations for a novel group disparity and whether these explanations impacted their social evalua

Social media use and life satisfaction among elderly migrants: dual mediation of social connection and place attachment.

BACKGROUND: "Elderly migrants" constitute an important segment of the aging mobile population. Due to their mobility, their mental health and psychological needs require greater attention. Life satisfaction serves as a key indicator of their mental health. Therefore, understanding the life satisfaction of elderly migrants is a critical and practical research topic. However, the impact of social media use on improving their life satisfaction has not been empirically verified. METHODS: This study employs a structural equation model to propose research hypotheses and a theoretical framework, fol

Effects of social exclusion on depressive symptoms: elderly Chinese living alone in Shanghai, China.

Research has identified social exclusion as one of the social determinants of health. There are risks of social exclusion in later life in recent years. However, despite the fact that China has the largest aging population in the world and reports a rapid growth in the proportion of older people living alone, research on the role of social exclusion on depression is limited. This study examined the effects of social exclusion on depressive symptoms in older Chinese who are living alone in China, based on the data from one Shanghai neighbourhood. The data used were obtained between August and O

Measurement and Correlates of Peer Social Support During Brief Psychiatric Treatment: The Fellow Travelers in Treatment Scale.

OBJECTIVES: Many forms of psychiatric treatment include social experiences as part of treatment. Patients often have both formal and informal opportunities to interact with their peers while receiving treatment in settings such as residential, inpatient, and partial hospital levels of care. However, patients' perceptions of these formal and informal social encounters are not routinely assessed in clinical care or clinical research, and the extent to which these social experiences are related to positive or negative outcomes during treatment is unclear. METHODS: The authors developed a 19-item

The role of poverty-related social determinants in maternal and perinatal health inequities: a cross-sectional study using the eLIXIR born in South London, UK maternity-child data linkage.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how poverty and social determinants influence adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in the UK is limited. While ethnicity and area-level deprivation are well described, fewer studies examine the cumulative impact of poverty-related factors such as low income, employment insecurity, housing, and access to social support. METHODS: We analysed 67,308 pregnancies from the eLIXIR cohort using linked NHS records. Social determinants were defined using the WHO framework as structural (ethnicity, migration status, area deprivation) and intermediary (housing, employment, fina

Examination of the Protective Factors Against Repetitive Dating Violence Victimization: The Buffering Effects of Social Relationships.

This study examined whether social relationships buffer dating violence victimization. We hypothesized that (a) richer social relationships reduce loneliness, (b) lower loneliness decreases partner fixation, and (c) reduced fixation lowers victimization risk. A web-based survey of Japanese women in their 20s living alone (N = 519) assessed social interaction, social support, loneliness, partner fixation, and psychological aggression. The results of structural equation modeling showed that richer social relationships were associated with lower loneliness, which reduced partner fixation and indi

The assimilation affects research from three days' social facilitation of eating by using whole network autocorrelation analysis plus multilevel linear modeling: a normative analysis based on prospective cohort study data in the UK.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of social facilitation of eating on dietary assimilation effects using a multi-method approach integrating whole-network autocorrelation analysis (WNA) and multilevel linear modeling (MLM). METHODS: We analyzed data from 26 participants (13 friend pairs) comprising 468 observations across multiple social and solitary eating contexts. The study combined WNA of 70 dietary similarity matrices with multilevel modeling to examine both systemic behavioral patterns and individual-level effects. MLM specifically assessed hierarchical data structur

From senility to Alzheimer's disease: the rise of the Alzheimer's disease movement.

Alzheimer's disease, once a rarely applied medical diagnosis, is now considered to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death in the United States. Several interrelated factors account for the disease's ascendancy as the preferred category to characterize specific types of neuropsychiatric problems associated with aging. These include a shift in the disease's conceptualization, the emergence of an institutional structure facilitating increased awareness of the disease, and the growth of a constituency advocating greater spending for and expansion of research on the disorder. A biological ph

The symptom burden and the assessment of palliative symptoms in patients with metastatic upper gastrointestinal cancer: A qualitative interview study.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with metastatic upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancer may experience a large physical symptom burden. However, less is known about existential, social, and psychological symptoms. To provide the patient with palliative care, quality-of-life questionnaires are used for structured needs assessment. These are sporadically implemented, and there seems to be uncertainty to the efficiency of current practice. The aim of study was to explore the experienced assessment-process and treatment of palliative symptoms, as well as the experienced symptom burden, in patients with metastatic

Determinants of quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia: A structural equation modeling approach.

OBJECTIVE: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) is lower than in patients with other chronic diseases and the general population. Although various factors affect HRQOL, no study has examined a structural equation model of HRQOL as an outcome variable in FM patients. The present study assessed relationships among physical function, social factors, psychological factors, and HRQOL, and the effects of these variables on HRQOL in a hypothesized model using structural equation modeling (SEM). METHODS: HRQOL was measured using SF-36, and the Fibromyalgia Impact

Social Interaction is Unnecessary for Hindgut Microbiome Transmission in Honey Bees: The Effect of Diet and Social Exposure on Tissue-Specific Microbiome Assembly.

Honey bees are a model for host-microbial interactions with experimental designs evolving towards conventionalized worker bees. Research on gut microbiome transmission and assembly has examined only a fraction of factors associated with the colony and hive environment. Here, we studied the effects of diet and social isolation on tissue-specific bacterial and fungal colonization of the midgut and two key hindgut regions. We found that both treatment factors significantly influenced early hindgut colonization explaining similar proportions of microbiome variation. In agreement with previous work
