Soil is an important compartment in the environmental cycling of trichloroacetic acid (TCA), but soil TCA concentration is a methodologically defined quantity; analytical methods either quantify TCA in an aqueous extract of the soil, or thermally decarboxylate TCA to chloroform in the whole soil sample. Iodine deficiency diseases (IDD) are a public health problem in many developing countries, such as Cameroon. They are often the consequence of insufficient iodine intake and/or the effect of thiocyanate in foods such as cassava; this chemical inhibits iodine fixation by the thyroid gland. Standard soil samples contaminated with various standard cyanocompounds were prepared. Column elution experiments and analyses were conducted. Compounds with an easy capacity for dissociation to ions, such as KCN and potassium hexacyanoferrate(III), were found to be eluted by forming free cyanide even in fresh water. The key genes nahAc and xylE of the naphthalene catabolism of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. in the total soil DNA samples were detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The collection of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. was screened for the occurrence of these genes. The results obtained show the possibility of using this approach in the goal-directed search for plasmid-containing naphthalene-degrading fluorescent pseudomonads in soil. The distribution of the naphthalene catabolism genes in soils contaminated with creosote and petroleum products was also studied.

Total, hexavalent and trivalent chromium were determined in surface and 30-cm depth soil samples from a highly chromium-polluted area in Guanajuato state, central México. Four samples were also analyzed by a sequential extraction procedure. Endemic Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in Africa has been attributed to a geographically-determined environmental factor. Endemic KS, a chronic nodular condition predominantly affecting the feet and legs, is believed to arise in the lymphatic endothelium and is associated with chronic lymphoedema. The infectivity of Taenia saginata eggs exposed to environmental conditions on a natural soil surface in Denmark was studied by feeding the eggs to susceptible calves, followed by determination of the number of cysts developed. The results indicated that a small proportion of the eggs remained infective for 6 1/2 months, but not for 9 1/2 months when deposited in May 1986, and for 5 1/2 months but not for 8 1/2 months when deposited in September 1987. Viability of eggs was tested in vitro and compared with infectivity obtained in calves.

The persistence of 5 insecticides in two soils, one rich (soil 1), the other poor (soil 2) in organic matter was examined in the laboratory using gas chromatographyc and radiometric techniques. Nitric oxide gas evolution from nitrite was studied in vitro in three rice soils by gas chromatography. Autoclaved soils showed an NO evolution when supplemented with nitrite. Yet, when temperature of incubation, soil pH, soil moisture content and nitrite concentration were varied in the three soils, and with addition of nitrite reductase inhibitors, it appeared in one soil that NO production was partially a biological process.
