A procedure is described for monitoring the temperature in the reaction cuvettes of analytical systems that use photometers. The method employs the temperature-dependent change in absorbance of solutions of either 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid or cresol red. The procedure is simple to perform and is especially useful in monitoring the temperature in instruments such as centrifugal analysers where the reaction cuvette is inaccessible. In some of the instruments studied, methodological changes were required to ensure that reactions were carried out at the selected temperature.

The magnesium content of hair from alopecia areata atopica patients, from nonatopic dermatological patients and from normal controls has been studied using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The two groups of patients had lower means and ranges than did the normal subjects, but the overlap was considerable. It is suggested that the lower levels found in the patients may be due to the nonspecific 'metabolic cost' of the skin diseases.

Reaction of the propenones 1c, d with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate followed by hydrolysis gave the corresponding carbamoyloxybenzoates 2a, b. While their reaction with ethyl isocyanate afforded the 1,3-benzoxazine-2,4-diones 3a, b. Reaction of 1a, b with aryl hydrazines gave the pyrazolines 4a, d, whereas, with hydrazine hydrate in acetic acid, the acetyl derivatives 4e, f were produced. 1c, d reacted with malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate affording the cyanopyridines 5 and cyanopyridones 6 respectively. The spectral and catalytic properties of the copper cofactor in highly purified bovine aortic lysyl oxidase have been examined. As isolated, various preparations of purified lysyl oxidase are associated with 5-9 loosely bound copper atoms per molecule of enzyme which are removed by dialysis against EDTA. Circular dichroic (CD) spectra of soybean leghemoglobin, and some of its liganded derivatives were measured over the wavelength range of 650 to 200 nm.
