Calcium, calcification, and melatonin biosynthesis in the human pineal gland: a postmortem study into age-related factors.

It is believed that pineal calcification may be age-associated and that the well-demonstrated age-related decline in melatonin biosynthesis may be an expression of an alteration in calcium homeostasis in the pinealocyte. Prior correlations of melatonin to calcium deposition and age were made on the basis of radiological or semiquantitative analysis. In this postmortem study of 33 subjects (age range 3 months to 65 years) calcium deposits measured by atomic absorption spectrometry correlated positively with age in day and night samples (day: r = 0.56, P < 0.05; night: r = 0.818, P < 0.001). The effect of dietary calcium content and oral vitamin D3 supplementation on mineral homeostasis in a subterranean mole-rat Cryptomys damarensis.

The Damara mole-rat, Cryptomys damarensis, has no access to obvious dietary or endogenous sources of vitamin D. We tested the hypotheses that mineral metabolism in these animals is independent of vitamin D status but rather is affected by dietary calcium (Ca) content. Furthermore, we questioned whether bone and teeth assist in plasma mineral homeostasis. Mole-rats increased Ca intake when dietary Ca content increased; however, mode of gastrointestinal uptake, vitamin D metabolite and plasma Ca concentrations were not altered. Similarly, oral vitamin D supplementation did not affect gastrointes

Effect of iron and estrogen on melatonin secretion by the chicken pineal gland.

Estrogen effects on pineal secretion of melatonin are controversial. Some feel that estrogen inhibits melatonin output in vitro but not in vivo. Melatonin levels vary with the age in chickens where circulating estrogen levels also vary. Laying hens have minimal melatonin levels and maximal serum iron concentrations. Thus, we reasoned that iron released by estrogen may inhibit melatonin secretion from the chick pineal gland. The present study shows that perifusion of estrogen-treated chick pineal glands with several concentrations of iron greatly inhibited melatonin secretion.

Iron metabolism is modified by the copper status of a human erythroleukemic (K562) cell line.

Copper deficiency is known to result in a microcytic, hypochromic anemia. Red cells of copper-deficient animals have less hemoglobin than their copper-adequate counterparts. The objective of this work was to determine what role copper plays in maintaining hemoglobin levels. It was hypothesized that the primary defect lies in intracellular iron metabolism. The influence of copper supplementation on iron uptake and storage was examined in a cell line capable of hemoglobin synthesis. The results demonstrated that copper supplementation of human K562 cells was associated with higher cytosolic iron

[The efficacy of personal prevention measures in controlling the exposure to metals of welders].

Biological monitoring of welders employed in a power plant showed urinary nickel levels largely exceeding the reference values (Ni-U welders mean = 43.2, S.D. = 22.1 micrograms/24 h; Ni-U reference values mean = 2.7, S.D. = 1.4 micrograms/24 h). Subsequently urinary excretion levels of other metals (Cr, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu, Al, Pb) were measured for a more complete assessment of occupational exposure of these subjects; only aluminum and lead were found to slightly exceed the reference values and correlate with urinary nickel levels. As a consequence of these results, some adjustments in personal pr

Tissue mineral levels in victims of sudden infant death syndrome II. Essential minerals: copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium.

Deficiencies of various vitamin and minerals per se have been suggested as possible causes of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Further, a deficiency of essential minerals may lead to enhanced toxicity of toxic elements, in particular, lead and cadmium to explore the possibility of mineral deficiencies or interactions with the toxic metals, lead and cadmium, lung, liver, kidney, and rib specimens were obtained at autopsy from 66 SIDS infants and 23 infants who died suddenly from other cases. Tissue copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. No diff

Atomic absorption analysis of some trace metals of toxicological interest.

A selective and critical review, mainly from 1971 to 1974, of atomic absorption applied to the determination of eight toxic metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, thallium, arsenic, bismuth, beryllium, and boron) in blood, urine, and tissue is presented. Discussion involves both flame and flameless atomization, sample preparation, matrix modification, background correction, and contamination. Advantages of other atomic spectrometric techniques and use of recent confirmatory instrumental methods are included. Some normal and toxic levels are mentioned.

Plasma and urinary zinc in patients with malabsorption syndromes or hepatic cirrhosis.

Plasma and urinary zinc have been measured in 19 patients with malabsorption and 21 patients with hepatic cirrhosis. The results have been compared with those of 20 control subjects and 23 patients with a variety of other diseases. The diurnal variation in plasma zinc levels has been confirmed and is of such magnitude that this must be taken into account in comparing results in groups of subjects. Plasma zinc levels, both fasting and after a meal, are significantly lower in patients with cirrhosis (71 and 60 mug/100 ml) and malabsorption (76 and 64 mug/100 ml) than in controls (97 and 81 mug/1

Spatial distribution of heavy metals in seawater and age-specific health risks to swimmers at Tirang Beach, Indonesia.

River-influenced urban beaches require spatially and temporally resolved monitoring to assess contaminant exposure during recreational activities. This study examined how dissolved heavy metals are distributed in seawater and the health risks they pose to swimmers at Tirang Beach in Semarang City, Indonesia, and evaluated age-specific non-carcinogenic risks from incidental ingestion by adult and child swimmers. Four sampling campaigns at five locations produced 20 station-campaign observations. Metal concentrations were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and their spat

Blood Lead Levels and Associated Sociodemographic and Occupational Factors in Children from Two Mexican Communities: A Comparative Study.

Lead is a neurotoxic metal. No safe blood lead level (BLL) has been identified in children; the CDC reference value was lowered to 3.5 µg/dL in 2021, while Mexico's regulatory threshold remains at 10 µg/dL. Lead-glazed earthenware is the main documented source of pediatric exposure in Mexico. We studied children 0-15 years insured by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in two Jalisco municipalities: Tonalá (n = 500), historically a ceramic-producing center, and Zapopan (n = 374), an urban area without this tradition. BLL was measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotom

Determination of some heavy metals concentrations in green and yellow wheat crops from Iraqi fields: a comparative analysis of heavy metal accumulation.

Wheat is a crucial staple crop in Iraq, essential for food security. However, heavy metal contamination from sources like irrigation water and fertilizers can pose risks to both plant health and human consumption. This study compares heavy metal levels in green and yellow wheat plants, in five agricultural regions in Iraq: Baghdad, Kirkuk, Salah Al-Din, Al Anbar, and Basra, addressing a gap in research specific to Iraqi wheat and its safety. The research analyzed six heavy metals-iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb)-in different plant parts using atomi
