A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with ultraviolet detection has been developed for the analysis of purines in urinary calculi. The method using gradient of methanol concentration and pH was able to separate 16 compounds: uric acid, 2,8-dihydroxyadenine, xanthine, hypoxanthine, allopurinol and oxypurinol as well as 10 methyl derivatives of uric acid or xanthine (1-, 3-, 7- and 9-methyluric acid, 1,3-, 1,7- and 3,7-dimethyluric acid, 1-, 3- and 7-methylxanthine). The aim of this study was to examine in vitro the binding capacity of thioridazine to natural melanin isolated from pig eyes and to synthetic DOPA-melanin. The preparation and the solvatochromic behavior of two dyes, obtained by condensation of N,N'-dimethylbarbituric acid with dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and with 4,4'-bis(N,N-dimethylamino)benzophenone (Michler's ketone) are described. The latter dye is rather sensitive to the polarity of the medium, and in particular, to the hydrogen-bond-donor ability of protic solvents. The solvatochromism of both compounds is discussed in terms of the pi* and E(T)(30) solvent polarity scales and their differences in behavior interpreted with the aid of semiempirical calculations.

An isocratic chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of 10 benzodiazepines is presented. A method for the determination of piracetam in human plasma and urine by liquid chromatography with absorbance detection at 206 nm and isocratic elution is proposed. A method involving a sorbent designed to capture specifically virus-inactivating solvent-detergent mixtures is described. Its specificity allows the adsorption of these undesirable chemicals with a high capacity in order to treat large amounts of inactivated biological fluids in small-sized columns. Typically, the volume of sorbent that can be used repeatedly is between one quarter and one tenth of the sample volume to be treated. Cleaning and sanitization can be done by classical methods while strong oxidizing agents can also be used to sterilize the sorbent.

The carbohydrate and lipid components of mycelium and conidia of Fonsecaea pedrosoi (Brumpt) were analysed by paper, thin-layer and gas-chromatography, mass spectrometry and ultraviolet spectroscopy.
