PURPOSE: Children with specific language impairment (SLI) are underidentified, despite a robust literature on their language abilities and a … ndicate that they would provide in-class intervention. However, teachers were unlikely to recommend speech-language pathology services. These outcomes were mostly consistent across all child characteristics and teacher characteristics.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings show that teachers were sensitive to the language-based needs of children with SLI and elected to provide in-class i …

Good quality normative data are essential for clinical practice in speech-language pathology but are largely lacking for French-speaking children. We investigated speech production accuracy by French-speaking children attending kindergarten (maternelle) and first grade (première année). The study aimed to provide normative data for a new screening test - the Test de Dépistage Francophone de Phonologie. Sixty-one children named 30 pictures depicting words selected to be representative of the distribution of phonemes, syllable shapes and word lengths characteristic of Québec French. Percent cons…

OBJECTIVES: To explore perceptual evaluation of jitter produced by fundamental frequency (F0) variation in a sustained vowel /a/, using two different methods. One is based on listener's internal references and the other is based on external references provided by the experimenter.
METHODS: We used two methods: one is magnitude estimation-converging limits (ME-CL), which is close to the standard approach used by speech therapists when they use numerical estimations and their own standards, and other is intramodal matching procedure (IMP), where each matched stimulus is to be compared with a fi

PURPOSE: To investigate factors associated with speech-language disorders in victims of motorcycle accidents.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. Victims of motorcycle accidents studied were treated at Hospital da Restauração between June and July 2014. The data were collected by consulting the records and direct interviews with these, at admission and after discharge. For analysis were raised single frequencies, average and chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. The margin of error used in the statistical tests was 5%, and the intervals were obtained with 95% reliability.
RESULTS: 99

ISSUE: The state of stuttering therapy continues to be of great concern in the field of speech-language pathology. Despite decades of research and clinical practical, stuttering is still treated by ineffective and inefficient means.
PROPOSAL: Our research group suggests that therapy failures stem from the use behavioural approaches; procedures that have resulted in only temporary and unnatural alleviation from the symptomatology by masking the disorder. These procedures 'denature' the disorder and induce pseudofluency rather than true fluency. It is proposed that in order to truly provide rel…

PURPOSE: Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) is an evidence-based treatment for children with childhood apraxia of speech. In clinical practice, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) frequently use an eclectic approach incorporating aspects of DTTC, for reasons that are not well understood. This research note describes a qualitative investigation of the experiences of SLPs and caregivers who participated in protocolized research DTTC for a 24-session treatment efficacy study. Specifically, we sought to understand the perspectives of these SLPs and caregivers regarding (a) DTTC treatment,

G. Paul Moore influenced the study of spasmodic dysphonia (SD) with his 1960 publication that examined the neurological, medical, and vocal fold behavior in a group of patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD). This review of advances in the diagnosis and treatment of SD follows a time line of research that can be traced in part to the early work of Moore et al. This article reviews the research in ADSD over the past 50 plus years. The capstone events that brought SD to its present day level of management by laryngologists and speech-language pathologists are highlighted. A look to the

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) rely on knowledge of tongue placement to assess and provide intervention. A total of 175 SLPs who worked with children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) drew coronal diagrams of tongue/palate contact for 24 English consonants. Comparisons were made between their responses and typical English-speaking adults' contact established by electropalatography (EPG). SLPs were most accurate for consonants with no contact (h, p, f), then velar consonants (g, k, ng). The remaining consonants were rarely accurate (from most to least accurate: l, t, r, z, n, sh, s, zh, y

This study describes differences between medical and educational fields in logopedics practice in The Netherlands. This dichotomy of fields is also found in other Western European countries and may result from the historical development of the profession. The four settings where logopedists work the most (institutional care, private practice, community care and special schools) were studied. One hundred and seventy-two logopedists in 103 practices or departments collected data on 1,761 patients. For each patient a standard registration form was filled in, containing information on (i) patient

We present a review of the literature on Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) together with the analysis of neuropschychological and neuroradiologic profiles of 42 PPA patients. Mesulam originally defined PPA as a progressive degenerative disorder characterized by isolated language impairment for at least two years. The most common variants of PPA are: 1) Progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA), 2) semantic dementia (SD), 3) logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA). PNFA is characterized by labored speech, agrammatism in production, and/or comprehension. In some cases the syndrome begins with isolated de

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) are the most common inflammatory causes of pediatric dysphagia, but several other less prevalent conditions should be considered. These conditions can affect one or several aspects of the swallowing process. In some inflammatory conditions dysphagia may be an early symptom. Esophagoscopy and instrumental swallow studies are often needed to determine the underlying diagnosis and best treatment plan. In some inflammatory conditions dysphagia can portend a worse outcome and need for more aggressive treatment of the underlying condit

BACKGROUND: Goal setting is an essential step in the clinical reasoning process of speech and language therapists (SLTs) who provide care for children, adolescents and adults with communication disorders. In the light of person-centred care, shared or collaborative goal setting between the SLT and client is advised in (inter)national guidelines. SLTs face challenges in implementing (shared) goal setting as theoretical frameworks and practical interventions are scarce and less applicable to use with a wide range of communication vulnerable populations.
AIMS: A first step in developing theory a

BACKGROUND: Descriptions of community-based speech-language therapy (SLT) dysphagia practices and services are underrepresented in the research literature, despite the prevalence of dysphagia in the community. Owing to a globally ageing population and government drives to support people to remain living at home rather than in hospital or aged care, there is a growing need for SLT services to be responsive to the needs of clients living at home in the community, referred to in this study as 'community-based clients'. Exploration of current SLT services and dysphagia care practices for this popu

BACKGROUND: Feeding and swallowing difficulties usually demand specialised knowledge and skills for effective assessment and management. In South Africa, community service speech-language therapists (SLTs) play an integral role in delivering care within the public healthcare system, where the ratio of patients to medical professionals is notably disproportionate. However, the extent to which they feel prepared when managing these conditions remains relatively underexplored.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the extent to which community service SLTs feel prepared when managing paediatric feeding and swa
