Seroprevalence of sporotrichosis infection in cats living in the Buenos Aires epizootic area.

This study aimed to perform a seroepidemiological survey on the prevalence of sporotrichosis among cats living in the Northern area of Buenos Aires, where a four-fold increase of Sporothrix brasiliensis infections were diagnosed during the last decade. For this purpose, an in-house indirect ELISA test sensitized with S. brasiliensis crude antigens was used. The ELISA test showed 100.0% sensitivity and 95.0% specificity. Antibodies against S. brasiliensis antigens were detected in 3.7% (9/241) of healthy cats evaluated, suggesting likely exposure or infection to this fungus. This ELISA test wou…

Sporotrichosis in an HIV-positive man with oral lesions: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a granulomatous fungal infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii, which frequently causes cutaneous or lymphocutaneous lesions and rarely has oral manifestations. CASE: A 38-year-old, white, HIV-positive man complained of a 5.0-cm, symptomatic, ulcerated lesion with thin, superficial granulation in the soft palate extending to the uvula. Exfoliative cytology of this oral lesion showed chronic granulomatous inflammatory alterations and extracellular fungal structures consisting of periodic acid-Schiff-positive budding cells and spherical or elongated (cigar bodies)…

[Atypical cutaneous sporotrichosis. The response to itraconazole and surgery].

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous (rarely extracutaneous) fungal disease caused by Sporothrix schenckii. Cutaneous sporotrichosis has two well-defined forms: lymphocutaneous and stable. In lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis, lesions arise along lymphatic vessels, generally in limbs. The stable form is rarer and consists of a single, generally facial, lesion. We report the case of a 70-year-old male farmer with a single lesion on the right nostril that had been removed repeatedly. After 5 years, new, linearly distributed lesions appeared. Fungal cultures of biopsy tissues revealed S. schenckii. The …

Disseminated sporotrichosis in patients with AIDS: case report and review of the literature.

Sporotrichosis is the disease caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenkii. Disseminated sporotrichosis is an uncommon infection which usually occurs in alcoholics or patients receiving immunosuppressive medication. We report a case of a patient with AIDS who had disseminated sporotrichosis which was progressive and fatal despite antifungal therapy. Four previously reported cases of disseminated sporotrichosis in patients with AIDS are reviewed. Disseminated sporotrichosis occurs in patients with HIV-1 infection and severe CD4 lymphocyte depletion. It usually presents with diffuse cutane…

Detection of fungi in cerebrospinal fluid.

With the exception of Cryptococcus neoformans, fungi are rarely detected in cerebrospinal fluid obtained from patients having or suspected o … omyces variotii, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Pseudallescheria boydii, Schizophyllum species, and Sporothrix schenckii. Laboratory findings for cerebrospinal fluid specimens obtained from such patients and clinical presentations are summarized.

[Sporotrichosis in patients attending a reference center in Abancay, Peru].

A descriptive study was conducted between the months of May and August 2008 in Santa Teresa Medical Center, Abancay. Of 33 patients clinically suspected with Sporotrichosis: 20 patients were identified with Sporothrix schenckii. 11 (55%) of patients were males. Children between 0 and 14 years were most affected. 60% of the lesions were fixed cutaneous being more frequent in the head and neck (40%). 55% had lessions for less than one month. In pediatric population with involvement of head and neck, Sporotrichosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of skin lesions of patients fro…

Disseminated sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii. It is a primary cutaneous infection and it has different clinical forms: disseminated by lymphatic vessels (75%), localised cutaneous form (20%), disseminated cutaneous and extracuteus rarely. The systemic disseminated sporotrichosis is considered a severe opportunistic infection. The best diagnostic test is the culture. The authors report a case of a 36-year-old man, originally from Puebla, Mexico, with a diagnosis of disseminated sporotrichosis. Differential diagnosis with other pathologies includes leishmanias…

Fixed sporotrichosis as a cause of a chronic ulcer on the knee.

Chronic wounds are a major health care problem worldwide. Wound healing is a holistic endeavour that requires an accurate identification of the specific entities interfering with wound healing in a particular patient. We present a case of fixed sporotrichosis as the cause of a chronic ulcer in the knee. Although a culture of Sporothrix schenckii could not be obtained, a positive response to the sporotrichin skin test, a skin biopsy showed a suppurative granuloma and an adequate response to oral administration of potassium iodide confirmed the diagnosis. The identification and correction of the…

Fatal sporotrichosis.

Disseminated sporotrichosis is a serious fungal infection caused by the soil inhabitant Sporothrix schenckii. It is seen in immunocompromised patients, with a substantial number of recent cases involving patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, individuals with other conditions that affect the immune system also are at increased risk. We report a case of fatal disseminated sporotrichosis in a patient with liver disease and a diagnosis of a granulomatous condition presumed to be sarcoidosis; the patient was receiving systemic corticosteroid therapy. The various presenta…

Diagnosis of sporotrichosis in a donkey using direct fluorescein-labeled antibody testing.

A 4-year-old female donkey residing in an open field in Indiana was admitted for evaluation of facial lesions of 2 years duration. Cytologic and histologic examination of exudate and tissue from the lesions revealed a pyogranulomatous inflammatory reaction with numerous yeasts. Sporothrix schenckii was suspected to be the infectious agent; however, multiple culture attempts did not provide positive identification of the organism. Serologic examination supported infection with S. schenckii. A specific direct immunofluorescent antibody test performed on paraffin-embedded tissue sections confirme…

Susceptibility of congenitally athymic (nude) mice to sporotrichosis.

Congenitally athymic (nu/nu) mice were found to be more susceptible to intravenous challenge with Sporothrix schenckii than their phenotypically normal (nu/+) littermates as measured by lethality and the number of viable yeast cells in the liver 7 days postinfection. Thymus reconstitution of nu/nu mice (nu/thy) conferred a significant degree of resistance to sporotrichosis. Immunization greatly enhanced the resistance of nu/thy and nu/+ mice, but unexpectedly increased the susceptibility of nu/nu mice. The susceptibility of nonimmunized nu/nu mice and the finding that thymus transplants augmen…

Severe form of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis: a case report.

Sporotrichosis is the most frequent subcutaneous mycosis in Latin America. It is caused by species of the genus Sporothrix. Infection in humans occurs through the entry of the fungus into the skin. Zoonotic outbreaks involving cats in the transmission of the disease have been frequently reported. The lymphocutaneous form is the most commonly observed and the upper limbs are the most affected sites. We report a case of a 64-year-old healthy female patient with a lymphocutaneous form with rapid progression of lesions, which was refractory to initial treatment with itraconazole. Treatment with li…

Lymphocutaneous Sporotrichosis Treated with Potassium Iodide with Development of Subclinical Hypothyroidism: Wolff-Chaikoff Effect?

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycotic infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii that is acquired by traumatic implantation. The diagnosis is established by demonstration of fungal elements on histopathology and culture. Potassium iodide, azole antifungals, and terbinafine are the treatment options available. In this article, we report a 60-year-old female with lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis that responded well to potassium iodide. However, subclinical hypothyroidism (Wolff-Chaikoff effect) was encountered as a side effect of therapy which was managed with thyroxine replacement. Knowledge abo…

A 27-Year-Old Severely Immunosuppressed Female with Misleading Clinical Features of Disseminated Cutaneous Sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic granulomatous mycosis caused by fungus of the Sporothrix schenckii complex. It is considered to be a rare condition in most parts of the world. It mostly causes cutaneous infection but can also cause multisystemic disease. Unlike most deep cutaneous mycoses which have a primary pulmonary focus, it is usually caused by direct inoculation of the fungus into the skin causing a classical linear, lymphocutaneous nodular eruption. However, atypical presentations of the condition can occur especially in immunosuppressed individuals. We report the case of a seve…
