Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is an asymptomatic colonizer of human mucosal surfaces that is responsible for sepsis and meningitis in neonates. Bacterial persistence and pathogenesis often involves biofilm formation. We previously showed that biofilm formation in medium supplemented with glucose is mediated by the PI-2a pilus. Here, biofilm formation was tested in cell culture medium supplemented with human plasma. GBS strains were able to form biofilms in these conditions unlike Group A Streptococcus (GAS) or Staphylococcus aureus. Analysis of mutants impaired for various surface components rev

A 73-year-old man presented with lower back pain and bilateral palmar lesions. Urine culture grew Streptococcus agalactiae and C-reactive protein was raised. He was treated with antibiotics for urinary tract infection with suspected pyelonephritis. An echocardiogram ordered to look for infective endocarditis was suggestive of a left atrial myxoma. He subsequently developed an acute right common iliac artery embolus, which resolved with conservative management. He underwent a successful open-heart left atrial mass and appendage resection, with histopathology confirming atrial myxoma. Skin biops…

The newborn may acquire infections during delivery due to maternal colonization of the birth canal, by microorganisms such as Streptococcus agalactiae that caused early neonatal infection, or acquisition through the placenta, amniotic fluid or birth products. After birth, the newborn that needs hospitalization can develop nosocomial infections during their care and exceptionally through lactation by infectious mastitis or incorrect handling of human milk, which does not require to stop breastfeeding in most cases. It is important and necessary to perform microbiological diagnosis for the corre…

A total of 965 cultures of streptococci received at a reference unit for identification were examined with API-20 Strep kits and also by established methods. The API method, although it needed to be supplemented with additional tests, largely overcame the difficulty that pyogenic streptococci are usually identified by their serological reactions and that biochemical tests are used for the identification of the other streptococci. Representatives of at least 24 established or possible species were identified.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS), characterized by Lancefield in 1933, was not recognized as a human pathogen until the early 1970s when it emerged and replaced Escherichia coli as the most common cause of sepsis and meningitis among neonates and young infants. This article briefly gives a personnel account of the discovery of clinical syndromes of GBS distinguished by age at onset, vertical mode of transmission for early-onset disease, meningeal tropism for GBS capsular (CPS) type III strains, and protective CPS epitopes. It also reviews the difficult evolution of the now routine program for anten

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is the leading cause of life-threatening meningitis in human newborns in industrialized countries. Meningitis results from neonatal infection that occurs when GBS leaves the bloodstream (bacteremia), crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and enters the central nervous system (CNS), where the bacteria contact the meninges. Although GBS is known to invade the BBB, subsequent interaction with astrocytes that physically associate with brain endothelium has not been well studied.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We hypothesize that …

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: There is paucity of information on vaginal and rectal colonization with multiple serotypes of group B streptococci (GBS). As part of an ongoing cohort study evaluating the natural history of vaginal and rectal colonization by GBS, the colonization with multiple serotypes was studied in 102 non-pregnant women aged 18-30 yr.
METHODS: Up to ten separate colony picks of beta-haemolytic streptococci (total 1515 isolates) were selected from vaginal and rectal primary culture plates. The colonies were identified as GBS, and their capsular polysaccharides (CPS) serotypes dete

We reported an infant with occult bacteremia caused by group B Streptococcus (GBS). An 8-week-old girl, who was uneventfully born to an 18-year-old mother, was hospitalized because of a 4-hour history of fever. On admission, she appeared nontoxic, and the temperature was 39.0 degrees C, and the pulse and respiratory rates were 162/min and 42/min, respectively. Laboratory findings showed a total white blood count of 5,200/microliter with 44% neutrophils and C-reactive protein of 0.7 mg/dl. Cerebrospinal fluid and urine examinations did not disclosed any abnormalities. After a complete evaluatio

We describe a case of urethritis caused by group B streptococci. The diagnosis was confirmed by examination of a Gram stained smear, isolation of the organism from the urethral discharge, and also by the clinical response to treatment with phenoxymethyl penicillin.

Two previously healthy men, aged 38 and 39 years, with meningitis due to group B streptococci are described. These patients are unique as only one or two adults with group B streptococcal meningitis without predisposing diseases have been reported previously.

To the already known pathological pictures caused by group B streptococci, mucopurulent conjunctivitis is added. Clinical pictures in adult and children are described shortly. Bacteriological findings are added. Pharyngeal streptococci of the same group found in some cases in people nearby, may be incriminated as the source of infection of conjunctiva.

A new cell line was established from the brain of a cultured fish, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), designated as TA-02 (Tilapia Astrocyte c … sion electron microscope (TEM), and PCR positive signal. Bacterial cytotoxicity studies showed that Streptococcus agalactiae was toxic to TA-02 cells. When co-culture with trans-well, TA-02 exhibited prominent barrier properties, manifested by tight intercellular junctions and increased trans-endothelial electrical resistance (TEER). In addition, the barrier is effective …

In this study, the causative bacteria and their sensitivity to various antimicrobial agents as well as risk factors for quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli were investigated in patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis or complicated cystitis by isolation and culture of bacteria from urine samples. In total, 1312 strains were isolated from 1009 patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis, including E. coli (63.3%), Enterococcus faecalis (12.8%) and Streptococcus agalactiae (4.6%). In addition, 994 strains were isolated from 725 patients with complicated cystitis, including E. coli (36.4%), E.…

Nine commercial teat dip formulations containing 1.94% linear dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid, or 1% available iodine from nonylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanol-iodine complex, or .5% chlorhexidine acetate were tested for contamination with aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and their in vitro germicidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli, and Nocardia asteroides. All products were free of bacteria when neutralized samples were tested on blood agar or liquid thioglycollate media. To test for in vitro efficacy, each teat dip preparation was mixed with a…

Bacteriological culture (BC) is the traditional method for intramammary infection diagnosis but lacks sensitivity and is time consuming. Mul … esigned to simultaneously detect Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae. The priors used in our Bayesian model were weakly informative, with BC priors using the best available error data. Results were compared with those obtained using uniform priors for mr-PCR to test robustness. Weak and uniform priors gave about the …

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of neonates are treated for presumed bacterial sepsis with broad spectrum antibiotics even though their blood cultures subsequently show no growth. This study aimed to investigate PCR-based methods to identify pathogens not detected by conventional culture.
METHODS: Whole blood samples of 208 neonates with suspected early onset sepsis were tested using a panel of multiplexed bacterial PCRs targeting Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS), Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS), Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcu…
