Ear reconstruction after auricular chondritis secondary to ear piercing.

The recent fad of high ear piercing in the pinna has led to an increased incidence of auricular chondritis, which leads to dissolution of the cartilage and residual ear deformity. The typical postpiercing chondritis deformity presents as a structural collapse of the superior helical rim, scaphal cartilage, and the adjacent antihelix. The skin envelope is usually preserved, but it may be scarred from the infectious process and from previous drainage incisions. In the present article, the authors present a systematic approach to reconstruction of these acquired ear deformities. Careful assessmen

[Assessment of 7 years of automatic suturing in pulmonary surgery].

In 738 patients, the stapler-suturing methods were used in 2 main areas of concern: closure of the major hilar broncho-vascular structures (for smaller pulmonary vessels, we use absorbable ligating clips: Absolok from Ethicon and Polysurgiclip from USSC), suture of the lung parenchyma. Regarding pedicular sutures, our rate of bronchial fistula is 1,0% (or 4,4% if only pneumonectomies are taken into account: 1,4 on the left and 7,7 on the right). These rates are compared with those gathered from the literature, with emphasis on the right main bronchus. Regarding parenchymal sutures, we place TA

Exosomes in obstructive sleep apnea-related diseases.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a global public health concern characterized by repeated upper airway collapse during sleep. Research indicates that OSA is a risk factor for the development of various diseases, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, respiratory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Exosomes, extracellular vesicles released by most cell types, play a key role in intercellular communication by transporting their contents-such as microRNA, messenger RNA, DNA, proteins, and lipids-to target cells. Intermittent hypoxia associated with OSA alters circula

DNA Methylation as a Molecular Mechanism of Carcinogenesis in World Trade Center Dust Exposure: Insights from a Structured Literature Review.

The collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings in New York City generated a large plume of dust and smoke. WTC dust contained human carcinogens including metals, asbestos, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins), and benzene. Excess levels of many of these carcinogens have been detected in biological samples of WTC-exposed persons, for whom cancer risk is elevated. As confirmed in this structured literature review (n studies = 80), all carcinogens present in the settled WTC dust (metals, asbes

Reconstructive rhinoplasty using cadaver cartilage in relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disorder of unknown cause characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilage predominantly affecting the ears, nose, and upper airway. The bridge of the nose and surrounding tissue can collapse, producing a saddle nose deformity. Nasal reconstruction is often challenging in these patients due to impaired wound healing and graft take caused by autoimmune inflammatory disease and prolonged immunosuppressant treatment. Many different reconstruction techniques like autologous rib, fascia lata, and calvarial bone grafts have been used. Herein we repor

Histological and immunological characteristics of the junctional epithelium.

The continuity of epithelial tissue is collapsed by tooth eruption. The junctional epithelium (JE) is attached to the tooth surface by hemidesmosomes, which constitutes the front-line defense against periodontal bacterial infection. JE constitutively expresses intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and neutrophils and lymphocytes penetrate into JE via interaction between ICAM-1 and LFA-1 expressed on the surface of these migrating cells. JE also expresses cytokines and chemokines. These functions of JE are maintained even in germ-free condition. Therefore, the constitutive expression of a

Diseases of Subchondral Bone 2.

Osteonecrosis of the knee can be divided into the following 3 categories: primary or Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK), secondary osteonecrosis (ON), and postarthroscopic osteonecrosis. Patient characteristics as well as underlying risk factors can help categorize the type of osteonecrosis and guide treatment. SONK was first described by Ahlback et al in 1968. It is described as a disease of subchondral bone that leads to focal ischemia and bone marrow edema, necrosis, and possible subsequent structural collapse. SONK typically presents in the older women with frequent involvem

[Pathology of the vitreomacular interface].

Vitreous role in the pathophysiology of retinal diseases has increased importantly over the recent years. This was possible using Optical Coherence Tomography which reviewed the way the vitreoretinal interface should be looked at and defined and classified new pathologies such as Vitreoretinal Traction Syndrome. Vitreous is not an empty space but an important anatomical structure with role in ocular physiology. With age biochemical changes occur so that vitreous starts to liquefy. Once the vitreous is liquefied (sinchisis) it collapses and passes in the retrohialoid space (sineresis). In compl

Electrical stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

Upper airway occlusion in obstructive sleep apnea has been attributed to a decline in pharyngeal neuromuscular activity occurring in a structurally narrowed airway. Surgical treatment focuses on the correction of anatomic abnormalities, but there is a potential role for activation of the upper airway musculature, especially with stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve and genioglossus muscle. We present evidence from research on upper airway neuromuscular electrical stimulation in animals and humans. We also present results from eight obstructive sleep apnea patients with a fully implanted system

The spine in sickle cell disease.

Bone changes in sickle cell disease occur due to marrow hyperplasia, tissue ischaemia and infarction due to vaso-occlusion. Between 1982 and 1991 thirty four patients were treated in the Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Departments of the Kind Fahd University Hospital, Al-Khobar, with spinal complications due to sickle cell disease. There were 21 males and 13 females aged between 4 and 28 years (mean 17.4 years). Structural changes in the vertebral bodies due to marrow hyperplasia occurred in 44% of the patients. Avascular necrosis leading to collapse of the vertebral bodies was seen in 9 (27%) pa

Retrograde cochlear neuronal degeneration in human subjects.

The purpose of this study was to identify the structural changes in the organ of Corti that correlate with retrograde cochlear neuronal degeneration. Thirty-eight temporal bones with excellent histological preparation from 23 subjects having hearing losses caused by cochlear disease were selected for study. Cytohistograms were prepared for inner and outer hair cells, inner and outer pillar cells, inner phalangeal cells, and cochlear neurons. The extent of neuronal degeneration was found to be directly related to the extent of injury to inner pillar cells and inner phalangeal cells, but not to

Site-specific self-protection of stacking faults enables durable Li-gas batteries.

Rechargeable Li-gas batteries, represented by Li-O2 and Li-CO2 systems, are promising for high-energy-density storage and gas-involved energy conversion, yet their operation is constrained by the trade-off between catalytic activity and structural durability of cathodes. Metastable defects such as stacking faults offer active sites for accelerating sluggish gas redox reactions, but readily undergo electrochemical stress-induced slip and structural collapse during cycling. Inspired by plant traumatic resinosis, we propose a site-specific self-protection strategy that exploits the intrinsic anis

Rb-Doped VO2 Enhanced Structural Stability for Aqueous Calcium-Ion Batteries.

Vanadium oxide exhibits significant potential for large-scale energy storage for aqueous calcium-ion batteries (ACIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity and multiple valence states. However, vanadium dissolution is often caused by lattice distortion and structural collapse during Ca2+ insertion/extraction. Herein, a Rb-doped VO2 (RbVO) material was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method, which achieved a high cycling stability in ACIBs. Experimental and theoretical calculations indicated that Rb selectively occupied the interstitial sites of the VO2 lattice, significantly exp

Golgi disintegration and functional disruption during paraptosis.

Paraptosis is a distinct form of programmed cell death characterized by extensive cytoplasmic vacuolation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) dilation and mitochondrial swelling. While previous studies have focused primarily on the ER and mitochondria, the involvement of the Golgi apparatus during paraptotic progression remains insufficiently defined. In this study, we identified previously uncharacterized high-density spherical structures, termed paraptosomes, that emerged during paraptosis in human glioblastoma U251MG cells treated with established paraptosis inducers. Further analyses revealed that

Al3+ Introduction Hydrated Vanadium Oxide Induced High Performance for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Aqueous zinc ion batteries are a promising alternative secondary battery technology due to their excellent safety and environmental friendliness. Vanadium-based compounds as a highly promising class of cathode materials still suffer from structural collapse and slow kinetics. Studies have shown that metal ion pre-introduction is an effective method to solve these problems and enhance battery performance. Here, the introduction of Al3+ , Cr3+ , Cu2+ and Fe3+ is found to effectively reduce the migration energy barrier of Zn2+ with the density functional theory calculations, while Al3+ exhibits t

Hairpin folding dynamics: the cold-denatured state is predisposed for rapid refolding.

Cold denaturation is a general phenomenon in globular proteins, and the associated cold-denatured states of proteins have important fundamental and practical significance. Here, we have characterized the cold-denatured state of a beta-hairpin forming peptide, MrH3a, in 8% hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) and the dynamics of its refolding following a laser-induced T-jump. Beta-hairpins constitute an important class of protein structural elements, yet their folding mechanisms are not fully understood. Characterization of MrH3a using NMR, CD, and IR spectroscopies reveals residual structure in the co

Tight junction regulation during impaired ion transport in blind loops of rat jejunum.

Epithelial cell tight junction structure in self-filling blind loops of rat jejunum, a model for blind loop syndrome in humans, was analyzed morphometrically along the crypt-villus axis. In control jejunum, the number of strands and junctional depth, including meshwork depth, decreased from crypt to villus tip. In the blind loop, aberrant strands appeared below the meshwork, particularly in crypt cells. Consequently, total junctional depth was greater than in controls. Furthermore, strand number and junctional meshwork depth were increased in blind loops at the villus tip. It is that site alon
