Restoration of retroacetabular bone stock by curettage and grafting with synthetics would obviate the need for autograft or allograft bone and prevent bone loss associated with revision. BACKGROUND: As some of the many patients who receive antimalarials for the treatment of noninfective inflammatory diseases (lupus erythematosus, collagen vascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and others) are also immunosuppressed because of their disease and/or treatments, and may have concomitant bacterial infections, we investigated the effect of these drugs on the growth and invasion of several bacteria that are commonly associated with skin and soft tissue infections to determine whether they could protect against such conditions and obviate the need for an additional antibiotic drug.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus may be treated with pancreatic islet cell transplantation. The use of xenogenic islet cells may overcome the shortage of human donor organs. Microencapsulation seems to be a promising method for immunoprotection. Since isolation, purification, encapsulation, and transplantation of islet cells are labor-intensive, cryopreservation has emerged as an attractive system for islet banking. In this study sodium cellulose sulfate (NaCS), a novel method for microencapsulation of islet cells, was tested for its capability to protect cells during cryopreservation.
