Health Inequities in the Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcomes of Plastic Surgery: A Scoping Review.

Background: Plastic surgery is routinely sought after for the treatment of breast cancer, cleft lip and palate, and gender-affirming care. Inequities exist in plastic surgery in regard to the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes experienced by patients. The purpose of our scoping review was to (1) outline current literature addressing health inequities in plastic surgery and (2) draw attention to the gaps in this literature. Methods: This scoping review was developed following guidelines from the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. An initial search of

Interdisciplinary aspects of abdominal and plastic surgery - what does the (abdominal) surgeon need to know?

INTRODUCTION: The aim was to reflect the established interdisciplinary aspects of general/abdominal and plastic surgery by means of a narrative review. Methods: (i) With specific references out of the medical literature and (ii) own clinical and perioperative as well as operating technical and tactical management experiences obtained in surgical daily practice, we present a choice of options for interdisciplinary cooperation that could be food of thought for other surgeons. CONTENT: - Decubital ulcers require pressure relieve, debridement and plastic surgery coverage, e.g., by a rotation flap

Platelet-rich fibrin for root coverage: A plausible approach in periodontal plastic and esthetic surgery.

Predictable esthetic root coverage has evolved into conventional treatment modalities making cosmetic procedures an integral part of periodontal treatment. The advent of second-generation platelet concentrates, i.e., platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), has broad clinical application in medical as well as dental field with its recent use for recession defects. The simplicity of PRF procurement and its low cost makes it most suitable for use in daily clinical practice. This particular case report foregrounds the benefit of PRF membrane along with coronally repositioned flap for mucogingival surgery on t

Localized disease: types of reconstruction/plastic surgery techniques after glans resurfacing/glansectomy/partial/total penectomy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the current literature specific to surgery for localized penile cancer including novel reconstructive techniques.Centralization of penile cancer services in many European countries and in particular the United Kingdom has resulted in an increased proportion of men undergoing organ-sparing surgery (OSS) rather than partial or total penectomy. In this review, we focus on reconstructive techniques following surgery for the primary penile tumour. RECENT FINDINGS: The widespread adoption of penile preserving techniques in Euro

Oculofacial plastic surgery-related online search trends including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose: The authors aim to characterize oculofacial plastic surgery-related online interest that may be useful in forecasting demand and in designing patient-directed online resources. Methods: The authors queried Google Trends for over 100 oculofacial plastic surgery terms. The main outcome measure was the top 50 oculofacial plastic surgery-related search terms from 2004 to 2020. Secondary outcomes were trends, including seasonality, and search volume changes during the COVID-19 lockdown (March-May 2020) compared to 2018-2019. Terms were analyzed individually and in thematic categories; cont

How Patient Decision-Making Characteristics Affect Satisfaction in Facial Plastic Surgery: A Prospective Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The main objective of this study was to prospectively analyze which personality traits, clinical psychiatric states, and patient decision-making characteristics predict who will be less satisfied after facial plastic surgery. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 60 adult subjects into one of three groups: aesthetic, functional, and reconstructive facial plastic surgery procedures (n = 20 in each group) from November of 2011 to February of 2016. Self-report surveys of personality traits (i.e., NEO Personality Inventory-Revised), psychiatric state (i.e., Patient Health Questionn

Clinical efficacy of acellular dermal matrix for plastic periodontal and implant surgery: a systematic review.

This review was performed to validate the clinical efficacy of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for plastic periodontal and implant surgery. Four electronic databases and a manual search were utilized to select randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published until March 2019. Overall, 28 RCTs were included: 25 on teeth and three on implants. For plastic periodontal surgery, ADM exhibited a comparable gingival recession reduction (RecRed) and soft tissue thickness (STT) gain to connective tissue graft (CTG). Subgroup analyses revealed that ADM obtained a similar keratinized tissue width (KTW) gain to

Pressure sores--a constant problem for plegic patients and a permanent challenge for plastic surgery.

Pressure sores can be defined as lesions caused by unrelieved pressure resulting in damage of the underlying tissue. They represent a common problem in the pathology of plegic patients and, plastic surgery has a significant role in their treatment. Pressure sores occur over bony prominences and so, they are most commonly seen at the sacrum and trochanters in paralyzed patients and at ischium for the patients who sit in a wheelchair for a long time. For these patients, surgical treatment is very important because on one hand, it stops the loss of nutrients and proteins at the site of the pressu

[Basement of matrix therapy in regenerative medicine by RGTA(®): From fundamental to plastic surgery].

Cells present continuous renewal, permitting permanent regeneration which is called tissue homeostasis. The signaling protein, known as growth factors, cytokines, interleukins and chemokines, but also the extracellular matrix play a key role in the cellular communication. All processes are deregulated after tissue injury, inducing scars. By reconstituting the extracellular matrix, it is possible to avoid the development of scar and to favorize the regeneration of the injured tissue. Glycosaminoglycans, and particularly heparan sulfates, by participating to the extracellular matrix structure, a

Nutritional deficiency of post-bariatric surgery body contouring patients: what every plastic surgeon should know.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery, particularly the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is currently the most effective method of sustainable weight loss for the morbidly obese patient population. Unfortunately, the nutritional adequacy of the postoperative diet has frequently been overlooked, and in the months to years that follow, many nutritional deficiencies have become apparent. Furthermore, once weight loss has reached a plateau, many patients become candidates for body contouring surgery and other aesthetic operations. METHODS: The aim of this review was to highlight the nutritional deficiencies of

Continuous intravenous versus bolus parenteral midazolam: a safe technique for conscious sedation in plastic surgery.

Conscious intravenous sedation is a safe alternative method to general anaesthesia. We have used a technique of continuously titrated, as opposed to incremental boluses of, intravenous or intramuscular midazolam for conscious sedation, with tumescent adrenaline-lignocaine solution for local anaesthesia, routinely in 421 plastic surgical procedures between 1997 and 2000. All patients were American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class I or II. Conscious sedation was administered through our protocol of continuously titrated doses of midazolam in dextrose saline. The operative field was injec

[Plastic surgery of the pharynx and cervical esophagus using a revascularized intestinal segment in children].

Three children with isolated cicatricial stenosis of the pharynx and cervical esophagus were subjected to operation for segmental plasty with a free intestinal segment (2 jejunal and one sigmoid). In all cases the segment was anastomosed with the side of the carotid and internal jugular vein on the neck under 3.2 magnification. No complications occurred. The results of the operation showed a high effectiveness of segmental plasty in stenosis of the cervical esophagus. In cicatricial stenosis of the pharynx, in addition to restoration of normal deglutition, breathing through the pharynx must be

[Intraoral transpositional plastic surgery of coronoid process in treatment of recurrent TMJ luxation. Preliminary report].

As a preliminary communication, we introduce a surgical procedure not previously described--intraorally performed ventrocaudal transpositional plastic surgery of the coronoid process for the treatment of recurrent TMJ luxation. The aim is to provoke an early stretch reflex of the temporal muscle and tendons by surgically shifting its insertion when the mouth is opened to an extreme position. Physiologically, this limits the extent to which the mouth can be opened and counteracts luxation. We report on initial clinical results of the intraoral transposition of the coronoid process after on obse

[Late results of multi-layer plastic surgery of the posterior wall of the inguinal canal].

The author discusses results of operations on 159 patients for inguinal hernias who were divided into three groups depending on the kind of plasty of the inguinal canal. A comparison of long-term results obtained by the author's method of multilayer inguinal hernioplasty has been made with those of operations by the method of Postempski and after Bassini. Side complications (in the spermatic cord) made up 18% in patients operated upon by the Bassini method, 13% by the Postempski method and only 3% after multilayer plasty. Recurrent hernias were less frequent after the multilayer plasty as comp

[Prepuce plastic surgery, known as the Lille operation, in distal hypospadias. Apropos of 138 cases].

Distal hypospadias with meatus situated on the glans, in the balano-penile furrow, even on the distal part of the shaft, are the most frequent hypospadias. Without chordee, it's only a cosmetic handicap. The aim of surgery is to produce the esthetic appearance of a normal penis. In France, circumcision is not usual and most people prefer a child with prepuce. The best technique in this case is to keep the meatus in its hypospadial situation and get the prepuce circular with a ventral suture. It's an easy technique. The hospital stay is short, 2 or 3 days, without any diversion of the urine. Th
