Variations in Hyoid Kinematics Across Liquid Consistencies in Healthy Swallowing.

Purpose Judgments regarding hyoid movement are frequently included in evaluations of swallowing. However, the literature lacks reference val … lus, sip volume, and task repetition on the dependent variables. Results The data set comprised 975 swallows with available hyoid tracking data. Sip volume was correlated with peak hyoid XY position (rs = .15, p < .01), time-to-peak position (rs = -.15, p < .05), and speed (rs = .13, p < .01). No significant differences in hyoid kinematics were found acros …

Developmental Changes in Tongue Strength, Swallow Pressures, and Tongue Endurance.

Maximum tongue strength, mean swallow pressures, and tongue endurance were measured in 324 children ages 6-12 years. The purpose of this study was to measure saliva swallow pressures in absolute terms (i.e., kilopascals) and as a percentage of maximum tongue strength to determine functional reserve in across ages in children and to examine factors that may influence tongue strength and swallow pressures including age, tongue endurance, and tongue-tie. The study results showed that maximum tongue strength and swallow pressures increased with age, while tongue endurance did not. Swallow pressure

Interaction between nesfatin-1 and oxytocin in the modulation of the swallowing reflex.

Nesfatin-1, an 82-amino acid peptide encoded by the secreted precursor nucleobinin-2 (NUCB2), exerts potent anorexigenic action independently of leptin signaling. This propensity has propelled this peptide and its analogues as potential anti-obesity drug candidates. However, a more extensive comprehension of its biological actions is needed prior to envisaging its potential use in the treatment of metabolic diseases. Swallowing is an essential motor component of ingestive behavior, which induces the propulsion of the alimentary bolus from the mouth to the esophagus. The dorsal swallowing group

Multiple rapid swallow testing in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease are commonly referred to a gastrointestinal motility unit for assessment of esophageal physiology tests prior to an anti-reflux procedure. On esophageal manometry, most patients have normal peristalsis; however, minor disorders of motility such as ineffective esophageal motility and fragmented peristalsis are not uncommon. Multiple rapid swallow (MRS) test is a provocative method for assessing peristaltic reserve in such patients. We report our single-center experience on MRS testing. ᅟ ᅟ.

[Cases of migration of swallowed foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract].

Migration of swallowed foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract is a rare phenomenon compared with the total number of ingestions. In the reported two cases, the serious septic condition indicated urgent surgical intervention. We found a piece of wire swallowed a few months earlier in the right lobe of the liver and the retroperitoneum in case one, and a piece of wire in the pericardium, which migrated from the stomach through the left lobe of the liver, in case two. Abscesses and phlegmonae were found in the retroperitoneum and then in the femoral region requiring a reoperation in case

Clinical practice guidelines for videofluoroscopic swallowing studies: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are expected to make evidence-based recommendations, thus guiding practice and reducing unwarranted variation. CPGs are particularly helpful in guiding complex procedures such as the Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) for the assessment of dysphagia, but there is a suspected high level of variability among them. To explore the extent of this variation, this study aimed to systematically identify and appraise all VFSS CPGs available worldwide. METHODS: A systematic search of 3 academic databases and other sources was conducted to identif

Radiation exposure during videofluoroscopic swallowing studies in young children.

OBJECTIVES: Swallowing difficulties are best assessed by videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS). However, limiting radiation exposure is important, especially in young children. The purpose was to evaluate radiation dose in young children during VFSS, and to investigate factors associated with it. METHODS: Children with swallowing difficulty who underwent VFSS from February 2012 to July 2014 were recruited. Dose area product (DAP) and screening time were offered by the fluoroscopy machine, and effective dose was calculated from the DAP using a conversion coefficient published by the Nati

Differences in swallow physiology in patients with left and right hemispheric strokes.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the impact of lesion lateralization and lesion volume on swallow impairment on group-level by comparing patients with left and right hemisphere strokes and on patient-level by analyzing patients individually. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study of 46 patients with unilateral (22 left, 24 right), acute, first-ever, ischemic strokes who received a diffusion weighted MRI (DW-MRI) and modified barium swallow study (MBSS) during their acute hospital stay. We determined lesion side on the DW-MRI and measured swallow physiolo

Swallow strength training exercise for elderly: A health maintenance need.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown high prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia associated with frailty- and age-related muscle weakness. Strength training exercises have been advocated for locomotive health maintenance in the elderly and have shown positive outcomes. As muscles involved in oropharyngeal phase of swallowing are also comprised of striated muscles, the aim of this study was to determine biomechanical effect of a novel resistance exercise program, Swallowing Against Laryngeal Restriction (SALR), on pharyngeal phase swallowing in the healthy elderly. METHODS: A total of 28 volun

Neural Mechanisms of Swallowing Dysfunction and Apraxia of Speech in Acute Stroke.

Speech and swallowing utilize overlapping anatomy and are thus inherently related processes. We sought to identify common neural mechanisms between risk of swallowing dysfunction and apraxia of speech (AOS). This was a retrospective analysis using data from a prospectively collected cohort. Left hemisphere stroke patients (68 subjects) tested with the Apraxia Battery for Adults II, a swallow screen, and MRI were included in the study. Main outcome measure was the presence of AOS or aspiration risk after stroke. We identified a significant association between AOS measures and increased aspirati

Colon perforation caused by swallowing a shrimp leg: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ingestion of a foreign body rarely results in perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Foreign bodies such as dentures, fish bones, chicken bones, toothpicks and cocktail sticks have been known to cause bowel perforation; however, bowel perforation caused by shrimp leg has not been reported so far. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 69-years-old man who presented with a 4-months epigastric pain. Laboratory data revealed inflammation at the first hospital visit. Computed tomography revealed a hypodense lesion containing a hyperdense foreign body in the abdomen. Intra-a
