Excitable porcine gracilis muscle samples were subjected to an in vitro caffeine test. Muscle samples were taken from pig carcasses or as biopsy from anaesthetized and halothane tested pigs. The caffeine threshold of the muscle was determined, which was the caffeine concentration of the bath that produced a contracture of the muscle sample. The in vitro caffeine test is used in human medicine to diagnose malignant hyperthermia susceptibility. In the winter of 1987/88 a previously unrecognized septicemic disease syndrome - actinobacillosis in mature sows and gilts - was diagnosed in two minimal-disease swine herds in southwestern Ontario. In herd 1, 34 sows, 2 boars, 13 feeder pigs, and 30 suckling pigs were affected; 11 sows, 2 feeders, and 18 suckling pigs died. Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a genetic syndrome usually initiated by exposure to volatile anesthetic agents or depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents. To investigate the acute effects of complement activation on blood flow, we infused complement-activated plasma into the femoral artery of the isolated hindlimb of 19 anesthetized swine. Femoral artery blood flow decreased abruptly, was lowest at 1 min of the infusion, and thereafter slowly increased despite continued infusion. Serologic, biochemical, and pathogenic characteristics of 11 porcine isolants of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae that could not be placed in any of 16 established serotypes, were examined. On the basis of double-diffusion percipitin reactions, isolants were divided into 4 serologic variants, given serotype designations 17, 18, 19, and 20. Biochemical activity of the isolants was typical of E rhusiopathiae. One or more isolants of each serologic variant were pathogenic for both mice and swine.
