Aicardi syndrome (AS) is characterized by a triad of callosal agenesis, infantile spasms and chorioretinal 'lacunae'. It occurs only in individuals with two X chromosomes and is not familial. The outcome of AS is severe, with a high early mortality, considerable morbidity and a generally poor developmental outcome. However, the spectrum of AS seems broader than previously defined with a small proportion of the affected girls only moderately or mildly retarded. Several novel and important features should be added to the classic triad. The brain malformation is complex with cortical migration ab…

Behcet's syndrome is a systemic illness of unknown etiology characterized by necrotising vasculitis originally described in Turkey. Typical manifestations include urogenital ulcerations, eye inflammation and migratory thrombophlebitis. An unusual course of this disease is described. A 56 year-old man was admitted to the hospital with fever, milk-glass opacities on chest x-ray, mucosal defects on the tongue and penis, hematuria and proteinuria with functional disorder of kidney. Chlamydia pneumoniae, CIK positivity and C 3 complement decrease were found. Antibiotics and antimycotic drugs have s…

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogenous syndrome which has features of refractory anemia and preleukemic state due to the ineffective hematopoiesis of bone marrow cells. MDS is classified by the FAB classification and/or WHO classification, and has an International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) for evaluation of the prognosis. Available therapies consist of a variety of modalities from supportive therapy to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and are selected according to the condition of each patient.

POEMS syndrome is defined by the presence of a peripheral neuropathy (P), a monoclonal plasma cell disorder (M), and other paraneoplastic features, the most common of which include organomegaly (O), endocrinopathy (E), skin changes (S), papilledema, edema, effusions, ascites, and thrombocytosis. Virtually all patients will have either sclerotic bone lesion(s) or co-existent Castleman's disease. Not all features of the disease are required to make the diagnosis, and early recognition is important to reduce morbidity. Other names for the syndrome include osteosclerotic myeloma, Crow-Fukase syndr…

Lemierre syndrome is a disease that presents with oropharyngeal infection, sepsis, internal jugular vein thrombosis, and septic emboli with the Gram-negative organism Fusobacterium necrophorum cultured as the etiologic agent. Clindamycin, metronidazole and ampicillin-sulbactam are effective antibiotic treatments, although the length of treatment has not been firmly established. The syndrome is seen less frequently in the current age of antibiotics. It is important, however, that physicians be aware of the syndrome as initiation of prompt antibiotic therapy, including anaerobic coverage, is ess…

Two siblings with features of Brugada syndrome are reported. One of them had permanent pacemaker implantation elsewhere where he was evaluated for recurrent syncope and diagnosed to have tri-fascicular block. He continued to have syncopal episodes and subsequently detected to have runs of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia picked up on a routine ECG. His sibling also was found to have features of Brugada syndrome.

We describe a 25-year-old woman that presented with frequent rotational dizziness, visual loss of the right eye one month later, and unilateral deafness one year after. After 2 years, she presented with a right hemiparesis and deafness greater for low frequency tones. Magnetic resonance imaging with angiography of the brain showed constriction in the first segment of the cerebral anterior artery diagnosed as Susacs syndrome.

Two schoolboys from a non-endemic region visited an endemic area of Schistosomiasis in Yemen. They developed cutaneous itching after swimming in infected ponds. Five weeks later both brothers were admitted to the hospital with high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. The blood results exhibited marked eosinophilia and schistosomal serological test showed an evidence of exposure. Initially, stool examinations were negative, but the sigmoidoscopy was suggestive for acute bilharzial colitis and the biopsy showed schistosoma ova; a finding consistent with Katayama syndrome. Both patients…

PURPOSE: Discuss exhaustively the clinical aspects of hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), laboratory data, the progress made in understanding the pathogenesis, and treatment.
DESIGN: The work is a result of the research conducted in the framework of the most important studies on HRS.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Functional renal failure (FRF) is the most severe manifestation of hepatorenal syndrome, and becomes manifest with a decreased renal perfusion along with oliguresis, reduced excretion of sodium, high urinary osmolarity, azotemia and creatinemia. Liver transplantation restores normal renal functi…

PURPOSE: to show the manner of diagnose of this syndrome and to evaluate the possibilities of treatment MATERIAL AND METHOD--there are shown: --ophthalmological and ENT clinical examination --visual field test--adaptometry--audiometry --impedance--auditive evoked potentials--cataract extraction (phacoemulsification).
RESULTS: After cataract extraction the visual acuity increase.
CONCLUSIONS: For the diagnosis we need both the diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa and neurosensorial deafness. For the certainty of the diagnosis genetic tests are required. The treatment of associate ocular patholog…

Möbius syndrome is classically defined as combined congenital bilateral facial and abducens nerve palsies, although it may also be associated with a myriad of other craniofacial, musculoskeletal, cardiothoracic, endocrinologic, and developmental disorders. The problem that most patients complain about, however, is the inability to smile and close their lips while eating. Although the etiology of this syndrome is still unknown, scientific support has been growing for the hypothesis that it is due to an embryological disruption of subclavian artery development. The treatment of choice for facial…

A 15-month-old female child presented with sudden onset cough and hyperventilation along with evidence of metabolic acidosis. She had past history of recurrent vomiting, episodes of abnormal posturing, difficulty in deglutition and regression of milestones since 12 months of age. CT scan of the brain revealed hypodense lesions in bilateral basal ganglia and on MRI there were T2 hyperintensities in bilateral lentiform nuclei, caudate nuclei, thalamus, red nuclei and dentate nuclei. Biochemical examination revealed persistently elevated serum lactate levels with high lactate/pyruvate ratio. Resu

Klinefelter's syndrome is the most common genetic cause of human male infertility, but many cases remain undiagnosed because of substantial variation in clinical presentation and insufficient professional awareness of the syndrome itself. Early recognition and hormonal treatment of the disorder can substantially improve quality of life and prevent serious consequences. Testosterone replacement corrects symptoms of androgen deficiency but has no positive effect on infertility. However, nowadays patients with Klinefelter's syndrome, including the non-mosaic type, need no longer be considered irr…

Crouzon craniostenosis [MIM 123500], is identified on the basis of the additional phenotypical manifestations of acanthosis nigricans, vertebral changes and cementomas of the jaws. Choanal atresia and hydrocephalus are other features. The molecular defect in CDSS is a point mutation in the FGFR3 gene on chromosome 4p, whereas, the mutation in the Crouzon syndrome is in the FGFR2 gene at 10q25.3-26. An affected girl aged 2 years presented at the UWC dental genetics unit with a prior diagnosis of Crouzon syndrome. Choanal atresia had necessitated a permanent tracheostomy, and hydrocephalus was m…
