BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The biomechanical effects of foot orthoses (FOs) with and without a lateral bar compared to a control condition during walking at different speeds are still unknown. The objective of this study was to compare the biomechanical effects of functional FOs with and without a lateral bar to a control condition during comfortable walking in individuals with cavus feet and determine if their effects change at a fast speed.
METHODS: Fifteen individuals with cavus feet (age: 25.3 ± 5.8 yrs) walked under two experimental conditions (FOs with and without a lateral bar) and a control

Difficult intubation in neonates has innumerable aetiologies. It especially poses a formidable challenge to save a newborn baby immediately after birth where antenatal details are unavailable. A late preterm neonate was born limp and apnoeic. Several attempts to intubate the baby were unsuccessful. Possibility of subglottic obstruction was considered. The baby died of severe perinatal asphyxia. Autopsy showed a mass around the airway which turned out to be ectopic thymus on histopathology. Ectopic thymus can present as periglottic mass without externally visible cervical swelling and can cause

The cavus foot deformity is an often less understood deformity within the spectrum of foot and ankle conditions. The hallmark concern is the possibility of an underlying neurologic or neuromuscular disorder. Although a proportion of these deformities are idiopathic, a significant majority do correlate with an underlying disorder. The appropriate evaluation of this deformity, in coordination within the multidisciplinary scope of health care, allows for a timely diagnosis and understanding of the patient's condition. We provide an abbreviated survey of possible underlying etiologies for the pati

CONTEXT: Arch height is one important aspect of foot posture. An estimated 20% of the population has pes planus and 20% has pes cavus. These abnormal foot postures can alter lower extremity kinematics and plantar loading and contribute to injury risk. Ankle bracing is commonly used in sport to prevent these injuries, but no researchers have examined the effects of ankle bracing on plantar loading.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of ankle braces on plantar loading during athletic tasks.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Laboratory.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 36 part

BACKGROUND: Variations in foot posture, such as pes planus (low medial longitudinal arch) or pes cavus (high medial longitudinal arch) are associated with some lower limb injuries. However, the mechanism that links foot posture to injury is not clear. Research question The aim of this study was to compare plantar pressure between healthy individuals with normal, planus or cavus feet.
METHODS: Ninety-two healthy volunteers (aged 18 to 45) were classified as either normal (n = 35), pes planus (n = 31) or pes cavus (n = 26) based on the Foot Posture Index, Arch Index and normalised navicular hei

BACKGROUND: Talipes equinovarus, also known as clubfoot, is a congenital anomaly that affects one newborn per 1000 live births. Its standard treatment strategy is Ponseti casting management. This study aims to report the long-term outcomes of the Ponseti treatment in Iran.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was enrolled to evaluate clinical outcomes, radiological results, pedobarographic measurements, and quality of life after the Ponseti treatment in patients with clubfoot who were followed for at least five years.
RESULTS: In this study, 25 clubfeet of 18 patients were included. Significa…

Relapse of deformity after a successful Ponseti treatment remains a problem for the management of clubfoot. An untreated varus heel position and restricted dorsal flexion of the ankle are the main features of recurrences. We analyze the anatomical structures responsible for these recurrences. Materials and methods: During 5 years, 52 children with CTEV (Congenital Talipes Equino Varus) were treated with casts according to the Ponseti method, with a mean number of 7 casts. Closed percutaneous tenotomy was performed in 28 infants. Children were followed monthly and treated with the continuous us…

Congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) is a complex deformity of the lower extremity and foot occurring in 1/1000 live births. Regardless of treatment, whether conservative or surgical, clubfoot has a stubborn tendency to relapse, thus requiring postcorrection bracing. However, to date, there are no investigations specifically focused on clubfoot bracing from a bioengineering perspective. This study applied engineering principles to clubfoot bracing through construction of a surrogate biomodel. The surrogate was developed to represent an average 5-year-old human subject capable of biomechan…

INTRODUCTION: As a consequence of the introduction of effective screening methods, the number of invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures is … ly higher miscarriage rate than CVS and mid-trimester amniocentesis, and also increased the risk of talipes equinovarus. Amniocentesis should therefore not be performed before 15 + 0 weeks' gestation. CVS on the other hand should not be performed before 10 weeks' gestation due to a possible increase in risk of limb reduction defects.
DISCUSSION: Experien …

We present the clinical and radiographic findings in a mother and son with a dominantly inherited mesomelic skeletal dysplasia almost identical to that described in a large Thai family by Kantaputra et al., in which ankle, carpal and tarsal synostoses were noted. The proband in the family is a 48-year-old woman with mesomelic limb shortening, most pronounced in the upper limbs. Her parents were of normal stature and build. Her 15-year-old son has similar mesomelic limb shortening, and in addition talipes equinovarus. Radiological examination showed severe shortening of the radius and ulna with…

Severe clubfoot is a common sequela of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and myelomeningocele. Talectomy is a practical surgical procedure to assist in the correction of severe, rigid equinovarus foot deformity. However, the results of talectomy may be less predictable in rigid bilateral equinovarus foot deformity than in the treatment of unilateral clubfoot. To determine the outcome of talectomy in the treatment of bilateral rigid clubfoot, we reviewed the cases of all patients at our center who underwent bilateral talectomy. Seven children were treated for bilateral talipes equinovarus with…

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot, or talipes equinovarus (TEV), is an autosomal dominant foot malformation characterized by a variable clinical picture, ranging from mild to severe deformity. While its genetic basis has been partly elucidated, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood.
METHODS: We investigated a five-generation Polish family presenting autosomal dominant clubfoot associated with arthrogrypotic hand deformation. Genotyping was performed to identify variants co-segregating with the phenotype. Aberrant splicing effects were assessed in the proband's sample, and func…

Non-mosaic trisomy 9 (NMTS9) is a rarely described chromosomal abnormality because most affected pregnancies result in first trimester spont … ernia, hydronephrosis, and hypoplastic genitalia, multiple contractures, multiple dislocations, and talipes equinovarus. We also report an expansion of the cardiac, genitourinary, and renal phenotypes. This combined phenotype based on prenatal imaging and fetal/postnatal autopsy further delineates the clinical phenotype of NMTS9.

TARP syndrome (Talipes equinovarus, Atrial septal defect, Robin sequence, and Persistence of the left superior vena cava) is a rare genetic condition, caused by developmental defects during embryogenesis. The phenotypic spectrum of TARP shows high clinical variability with patients either missing cardinal features or having additional clinical traits. Initially, TARP was considered a lethal syndrome, but patients with milder symptoms were recently described. The TARP-locus was mapped to the gene RNA-binding motif protein 10 (RBM10) on the human X-chromosome. We clinically and genetically descr…

This is the first population-based study in Thailand on the prevalence of congenital limb defects (CLD). Data were obtained from recently established birth defects registries in three southern Thailand provinces during 2009-2013. Entries in the birth defects registries included live births, stillbirths after 24 weeks gestational age, and terminations of pregnancy following a prenatal diagnosis of fetal anomaly. The total of 186 393 births recorded included 424 CLD cases, giving an average prevalence of 2.27 per 1000 births (95% CI, 2.05-2.49). The most common CLD was talipes equinovarus (44.1%…
