Experiences of Cervical Cancer Survivors in Rural Eastern North Carolina: a Qualitative Assessment.

Little qualitative research has been conducted with cervical cancer survivors. We sought to understand the experiences of survivors in rural Eastern North Carolina and identify any barriers which may have kept women from receiving preventive Papanicolaou screenings or follow-up care. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 15 low-income and underserved cervical cancer survivors living in Eastern North Carolina. Participants included English-speaking women who attended a large cancer center for care between March 2012 and March 2013. Participants ranged from being recently diagnos

Childhood Exposure to Family Violence and Adult Trauma Symptoms: The Importance of Social Support from a Spouse.

This study examines the roles of both positive and negative social support from a spouse as potential moderators of associations between experiences of physical abuse and exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) as a child and adult trauma symptoms. We hypothesized that positive social support received from a spouse would have a buffering effect on trauma symptoms, while negative social support from a spouse would have a potentiating effect. Participants were 193 newlywed couples (total N = 386) randomly recruited from a marriage license database. Participants completed self-report question

Evaluation of sudomotor function in diabetes using the dynamic sweat test.

BACKGROUND: The study of sudomotor function represents a useful tool to evaluate autonomic disorders. Currently available tests allow either the measurement of sweat output from the whole body or selected small skin locations over time, or quantification of the number and size of sweat drops at a fixed time after stimulation. We devised a dynamic sweat test (DST) that measures at the same time sweat gland density, distribution of active glands, and sweat rate, and applied it to the evaluation of sudomotor function in diabetes. METHODS: The DST was used to evaluate sweating in the forearm of 1

Sexual activities of patients with STDs in the interval between noticing symptoms and presenting for treatment.

Examining the patterns of and reasons for sexual behaviors of patients with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) while symptomatic may help to develop effective prevention strategies for both STDs and AIDS. However, little is known about patients' sexual activities after noticing STD symptoms in China, where AIDS and STDs are spreading rapidly. We conducted a cross-sectional study at four STD clinics in Hefei, China. Patients' reported sexual activities were queried, using a tape recorder and earphones. A consecutive sample of 406 male patients with STDs were interviewed. One hundred sixty-fou

The association between upper limb motor performances and gait dynamics in essential tremor: an emerging relationship.

Essential tremor (ET) is a complex disorder extending beyond upper limb action tremor. Both slowing in upper limb movements and impaired gait performances have been widely described. The present study aimed to assess clinical-instrumental relationship between wearable-sensor recorded upper limb motility, tremor and walking performances in ET and explore their role in disease characterization. A gyroscope taped over the index finger was used to quantify both tremor in three tasks (forward outstretched; lateral-wing; instrumental finger-nose, iFN) and upper limb performances in the iFN. Maximum

A Novel Combined Soft Tissue and Bony Repair of Trochanteric Fractures in Revision Hip and Periprosthetic Fractures-Greater Trochanteric Abductor Tendon Augmentation (GTATA).

INTRODUCTION: Management of trochanteric fractures in revision hip surgery has a high incidence of non-union and complications. Fixation devices are often bulky, prone to breakage, and necessitate reoperation. This study describes a novel soft tissue and bony abductor repair that reduces the forces on bony fragments without the need for prominent metalwork. METHODS: This novel surgical technique involves fixation of the abductor mechanism with polyester and polyethylene sutures that are woven through the abductors and secured to the femoral shaft with a proprietary suture cerclage tape with c
