Young Adults' Perceptions of and Intentions to Use Nicotine and Cannabis Vaporizers in Response to e-Cigarette or Vaping-Associated Lung Injury Instagram Posts: Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Inhaling aerosolized nicotine and cannabis (colloquially called "vaping") is prevalent among young adults. Instagram influencers often promote both nicotine and cannabis vaporizer products. However, Instagram posts discouraging the use of both products received national media attention during the 2019 outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI). OBJECTIVE: This experiment tested the impact of viewing Instagram posts about EVALI, varying in image and text valence, on young adults' perceived harmfulness of nicotine and cannabis products, perceived risk of nicoti

A pilot randomized clinical trial of gamification to increase medication adherence.

INTRODUCTION: Medication nonadherence is a key contributor to poor control of cardiovascular risk factors, but most interventions shown to increase adherence are labor-intensive and have not been implemented widely. Gamification interventions informed by behavioral economic theory increase physical activity with minimal cost and personnel requirements. We tested the feasibility of a gamification intervention to increase medication adherence among patients at risk of cardiovascular disease with a history of medication nonadherence. METHODS: Patients seen in a single primary care clinic who wer

Testing the efficacy and mechanisms of an SMS intervention focused on motivating peer network support to reduce alcohol consumption in non-collegiate young adults: Protocol for a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-collegiate young adults engage in high rates of heavy drinking but are less likely to access alcohol-related counseling or treatment. Peers play a significant role in shaping drinking behavior, yet few interventions target close peer influence in this population. METHODS: This two-arm randomized controlled trial will enroll 300 young adults aged 18-25 who report 2+ heavy drinking days (HDD; defined as 4+ drinks for a woman and 5+ drinks for a man) in the past 30 days and are not enrolled in college. Participants are randomized (1:1) to receive either (1) an SMS intervention fo

Integration of a Patient-Centered mHealth Intervention (Support-Moms) Into Routine Antenatal Care to Improve Maternal Health Among Pregnant Women in Southwestern Uganda: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions that leverage social support (SS) can improve partner involvement and pregnancy experiences and promote antenatal care (ANC) attendance and skilled births. In our previous studies, we used behavioral frameworks to develop a user-centered mHealth-based, audio SMS text messaging app to support pregnant individuals to use maternity care services in rural Uganda (Support-Moms app). In our pilot study, we observed high intervention uptake, acceptability, and feasibility, as well as increased ANC attendance and skilled births. OBJECTIVE: With the pr…

Supporting partners of mothers with severe mental illness through text - a feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: During the perinatal period, partners of mothers with severe mental illness (SMI) play an important role in managing the new baby and supporting the mothers' wellbeing. Providing information via mobile phone on infant care, partner support and self-care may assist partners in their support role. METHOD: Partners (n = 23) of mothers with SMI were enrolled in a partner-focused SMS service sending brief texts 14 times per month for a maximum of 10 months. Partners (n = 16) were interviewed on exit and their responses analysed for acceptability and perceived usefulness of the texts. R

Feasibility of a Low-Intensity, Technology-Based Intervention for Increasing Physical Activity in Adults at Risk for a Diabetic Foot Ulcer: A Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Among adults with diabetes, 19-34% will develop a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), which increases amputation risk and health care costs, and worsens quality of life. Regular physical activity, when increased gradually, may help prevent DFUs. In this mixed-methods study, we examined the feasibility of a low-intensity, technology-based behavioral intervention to increase activity in adults at risk for DFUs. METHOD: Participants at risk for a DFU (n = 12; 66% female; mean age = 59.9 years) received four in-person exercise and behavioral counseling sessions over 2-3 weeks, supplemented wit

A texting-based blood pressure surveillance intervention.

The authors examined whether using home BP measurements collected via a custom-built bi-directional-texting platform incorporated into patients' electronic medical records would lead to treatment calibration and improved BP management. Patients were randomized to either the intervention group and collected home measurements based on reminders and reported via bi-directional texting, or to the control group, with home BP measurement reporting via standard practice (eg, phone, electronic medical record portal) and instructed to return 7 morning and 7 evening BP measurements. Outcomes included nu

Sexting, substance use, and sexual risk behavior in young adults.

PURPOSE: Cell phone use has become more widespread over the past decade. Young adults are frequently early adopters of new technologies, including cell phones. Most previous research examining sexting, the act of sending sexually explicit or suggestive images via text message, has focused on the legal or social consequences of this behavior. The current study focused on the public health implications of sexting by examining associations between sexting, substance use, and sexual risk behavior in youth. METHODS: Young adults (N = 763) completed online questionnaires assessing demographics, cel

Perceptions of AI-generated informational texts and effects of the source: An online experiment.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common for health information seeking, yet many people are still skeptical of its performance. This between-subjects online experiment tested whether informing readers that a text was produced by AI influenced their ratings in 774 participants. They were randomly assigned to read one of six brief texts and rated trustworthiness, interest, and perceived understanding, as well as intention to act upon the received information and willingness to share the information with others. Source information did not influence ratings, but only 41.5% of

Improving CDK4/6 inhibitors adherence in breast cancer using the CONnected CUstomized Treatment Platform (CONCURxP) mobile health intervention: Study protocol for ECOG-ACRIN EAQ221CD.

BACKGROUND: Cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors (CDKIs) improves survival when added to endocrine therapy in hormone receptor-positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) breast cancer. However, their complex schedule, side effects, and cost contribute to non-adherence. METHODS: The EAQ221CD is a two-arm randomized controlled trial that evaluates the effectiveness of the CONnected CUstomized Treatment Platform (CONCURxP), a mobile health intervention, versus enhanced usual care (EUC) on CDKI adherence among 390 patients with breast cancer and a new CDKI prescri

Patient-informed outpatient intervention to improve pregnancy outcomes through connections to social services: protocol for the BETTER randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial portion of the 3.6 million births per year in the USA (approximately 25%-30%) occur in the context of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs), including preterm birth (PTB), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth. Black individuals have a 2-3-fold higher risk of APOs and a similarly increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality compared with White individuals. Adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) are at the root of this disparity and contribute to it through multiple mechanisms. Maternal anaemia is an upstream fact

Beyond satisfaction scores: exploring emotionally adverse patient experiences.

OBJECTIVES: Although improving the average patient experience is at the center of recent efforts to make cancer care more patient centered, extreme experiences may be more informative for quality improvement. Little is known about the most deeply dissatisfying experiences that predispose disengagement and negatively influence patient outcomes. We sought to establish a framework for emotionally adverse patient experiences and identify the range of common causes. STUDY DESIGN: Qualitative study including in-depth interviews and free-text survey comments. METHODS: Thematic analysis of 20 open-e
