Hamartomatous polyp of the tonsil: A case report.

Hamartomatous polyps of the tonsil are rare. They have been described using various terms such as a lymphangiomatous polyp, lymphangiectatic fibrous polyp, lipomatous polyp, or pedunculated tonsil; hence, the actual incidence is difficult to be quantified. Polyp of the palatine tonsils is an unusual benign lesion of the head and neck. It is a rare polypoidal mass that generally arises from a pedicle attached to the tonsil and projecting into the oropharynx. Polypoid lesions of the head and neck are likewise rare, and such tumors arising from the palatine tonsils are sparse. Tonsillar polyp is

Lymphangiomatous Polyp of Tonsil: A Case Report.

Lymphangiomatous polyps of the palatine tonsils are uncommon hamartomatous proliferations that could be clinically misdiagnosed as malignant neoplasms. These polyps consist of dilated lymphatic vessels located inside fibrous and/or adipose tissue. In this paper, a 27-year-old man who presented to the outpatient clinic with a complaint of dysphagia is presented. On physical examination, the patient had a smooth, polypoid mass extending from the posterior section of the right palatine tonsil into the oropharynx. The patient underwent right tonsillectomy. Histopathological examination of the spec

A Case Study of Anisakiasis in the Palatine Tonsils.

Anisakidosis is a nematode infection caused by the ingestion of larvae-infected raw or undercooked fish. Although gastric anisakiasis is a common disease in Japan due to the popularity of eating raw and undercooked fish, reports of anisakiasis in the tonsils are extremely rare. A 68-year-old man presenting with clinical features of peritonsillitis was admitted for examination. The right peritonsillar region exhibited slight edematous swelling and rash, and a white foreign body was observed. This foreign body was removed, and pathological examination revealed Anisakis.

Unusual cases of carcinoma of palatine tonsil.

We present two unusual cases of carcinoma of palatine tonsil in elderly patients. Both the cases were initially diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil, second case, in addition, showed lung metastasis. On subsequent follow-up, the first case developed cutaneous metastasis in the right frontoparietal region while second case showed granulocytosis as paraneoplastic manifestation. The association of cutaneous metastasis and paraneoplastic granulocytosis with carcinoma of tonsil is rare. Cutaneous metastasis has been described only once in the literature while paraneoplastic granulocyt

TNF-α evaluation in tonsil cancer.

Squamous cell tonsil carcinoma is the most frequent form of oropharyngeal cancer, representing 70-80% of the total of head and neck malignan … f TNF-α in a group of patients with tonsil cancer in comparison to a group of patients with chronic tonsillitis, as well as the reaction of mastocytes and macrophages in the two types of tonsil lesions. Seric levels of TNF-α in squamous cell tonsil carcinoma were quite high, varying from 1000 to 2000 pg÷mL, and in four patients, with poorly differentiated ton …

[Tuberculoma of the cerebellar tonsils: a case study].

Tuberculoma of the cerebellum is a rare presentation of human tuberculosis and the presence of this disease in central nervous system in particular. We report the case of an immunocompetent 53 year old man who initially had an instability when walking, bitemporo-occipital headaches and insomnia, secondarily complicated state of agitation accepted into psychiatric care. The diagnosis was possible with MRI that revealed a mass in the cerebellar tonsil, not taking the contrast after gadolinium injection. The evolution under treatment for tuberculosis was positive. The control MRI performed at 15

The curious case of the orange coloured tonsils.

Tangier disease is an extremely rare and severe form of high density lipoprotein deficiency. Even though there is no specific therapy for patients with Tangier disease, it is important to recognize the clinical presentation as patients are at an increased risk of developing atherosclerosis and subsequent CVD. The case discussed in this report, illustrates the importance of recognizing that orange discoloured tonsils are an indication that the patient could be suffering from Tangier's disease.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a rare and aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma that mainly arises in the upper aerodigestive tract. The tonsil is a rare site of BSCC development and only fourteen cases have been reported in the international literature. We report here on the case of a 56-year-old man who presented with mild dysphagia. Computed tomography and examination of the oropharynx revealed a suspicious-looking, bulky mass on the right tonsil. Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of BSCC. The patient had cervical lymph node metastases and pulmonary me

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the tonsil.

Follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) are non-phagocytic, non-lymphoid cells of immune system, which are necessary for antigen presentation and regulation of the reactions in the germinal centers of lymph node. Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is unusual and those with an extranodal origin in the head and neck region are extremely rare. Here, we report a case of FDCS of the left tonsil in a 27-year-old male patient. The patient presented with swelling of the left tonsil and resultant difficulty in swallowing for last three months. The tumor was excised and was sent for histopathologic exam

[Immunomorphological investigation of hypertrophied tonsils in children].

The immunohistochemical investigation of hypertrophied tonsils in children of different ages (group 1--up to 7 years old, group 2--7-11 years old, group 3--12 years and older) are presented. The expression and localization of viral antigen, sIgA and IgE, CD3+ and CD20+ cells in the tonsils tissue has studied. We've founded out a decreasing of viral antigens expression in the older age groups. The highest intensity of sIgA expression has been determined in the second group. The count of CD3+ cells in the germinal centers of follicles has increased in 2 and 3 groups.

Histological and ultrastructural examinations of porcine tonsils.

The histology and ultrastructure of porcine tonsils were studied. The porcine tonsils were lymphoepithelial organs situated at the opening of both the digestive and respiratory tracts. The tonsil of the soft palate in the oropharyngeal tract and the paraepiglottic tonsil in the laryngopharynx were mainly consisted of secondary lymphoid follicles encapsulated by connective tissue. The stratified squamous epithelia covering the tonsils and their crypts were frequently heavily infiltrated by lymphoid cells. The pharyngeal and tubal tonsils (TT) were situated in the nasopharyngeal tract. The cells

Value of intraoperative ultrasonography in tonsil cancer.

BACKGROUND: The exact assessment of a tonsil carcinoma's size is often difficult because of the tumour's submucosal extension and deep infiltration. AIM: The aim of the study is to assess the usefulness of intraoperative ultrasonography in tonsil cancer. MATERIAL: Twenty patients with carcinoma of the tonsil were included in the study (squamous cell carcinoma keratosis - 12, squamous cell carcinoma akeratosis - 6, diffuse large B cell lymphoma - 1, neoplasma malignum microcellulare - 1). METHOD: Transcutaneous, endoscopic, and intraoperative ultrasonography were performed using a linear 7.5

[From tonsil capping to tonsillectomy to tonsillotomy].

Medicine has been dealing with palatine tonsil disorders since its beginnings. With the initial aim of eliminating chronic centres of inflammation, over time manifold surgical processes to extract tonsils were developed and tested. Very early on it already became clear that the complete extraction of the tonsil along its connective tissue capsule can lead to serious complications: the risk of bleeding after a tonsillectomy is well-known to currently practising surgeons. In order to reduce this risk and due to not yet existing safe anaesthesia, various techniques were developed aimed at merely
