Effect of partial ferrule on fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth: A meta-analysis of in-vitro studies.

PURPOSE: The present meta-analysis aimed to answer the following research question: In endodontically treated teeth (ETT), what is the effect of partial ferrule (PF) on fracture resistance compared to complete ferrule (CF) and/or no ferrule (NF)? STUDY SELECTION: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for relevant studies published until May 20, 2022. In vitro studies that compared the effect of partial ferrule with that of complete ferrule and/or no ferrule on fracture resistance of ETT were included. The studies were assessed for risk of bias, and a meta-analysis w

Managing Ridge Resorption After Tooth Extraction Using Partial Extraction Therapy.

Achieving successful long-term esthetic outcomes in implant dentistry requires that the height and width of the facial or buccal alveolar bone wall and, subsequently, the peri-implant tissues be maintained. Partial extraction therapy (PET) can be used to reduce the risk of facio-lingual collapse after tooth loss and improve the preservation of alveolar bone height and blood supply. This article demonstrates the use of PET for treatment of a hopeless tooth in the esthetic zone. After removal of the fractured maxillary central incisor, an implant was placed and restored with excellent esthetic,

Mandibular talon cusp: report of two rare cases.

Two rare cases of talon cusps in the mandibular incisors were observed during a prevalence study on talon cusp. One of them was seen on a mandibular primary lateral incisor. The other one was observed on the mandibular left permanent central incisor, and the right mandibular permanent central incisor was congenitally missing. There were no associated developmental syndromes with either of the cases reported. Of the 4770 children examined, nine cases had talon cusp with only two rare cases of mandibular talon cusp, one in the primary dentition and the other in the permanent dentition.

Esthetic dentistry in patients with bilaterally missing maxillary lateral incisors: a multidisciplinary case report.

Congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors pose a difficult esthetic and treatment planning problem for clinicians. Age, location, space limitations, alveolar ridge deficiencies, uneven gingival margins, occlusion and periodontal factors often necessitate an interdisciplinary approach. Over the last several decades, dentistry has focused various treatment modalities for replacement of missing teeth. Treatment plans for patients with missing maxillary lateral incisors have traditionally included either space closure or space reopening. To remove healthy tooth structure of adjacent teeth to

Multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of extensive external cervical resorption after dental trauma.

External cervical resorption (ECR) is a sequela of dentoalveolar trauma that may cause functional, esthetic, and psychologic alterations. The aim of this study was to report a successful multidisciplinary treatment approach performed in a 12-year-old patient who presented with posttraumatic ECR associated with extensive opened cavity, pulp necrosis, and periapical lesion of tooth number 9, with an initial unfavorable prognosis. Crown lengthening was done to enable restoration of vestibular surface with resin composite, forming a barrier that allowed endodontic treatment. Afterwards, a prefabri

Autogenous attachment technique with esthetics in mind: trauma management case report.

The majority of dental trauma involves anterior teeth, especially the maxillary central incisors. A crown fracture with pulp tissue involvement, severe sensitivity, and pain is certainly unpleasant for the patient. This case report will discuss the endodontic therapy and restoration with an autogenous tooth fragment attachment technique. When treating an emergency situation that involves trauma, it is challenging to provide the patient with both pain relief and esthetic restoration.

Management of two unusual cases of dens invaginatus and talon cusp associated with other dental anomalies.

The management of two unusual cases of dens invaginatus and talon cusp is presented. The first concerns talon cusp in maxillary primary and permanent lateral incisors, a supplemental tooth with dens invaginatus hampering eruption of the permanent incisors. The other present with bizarre crown morphology of a lateral incisor with talon cusp, dens invaginatus and a palatal accessory cusp-like structure. Early diagnosis and management are important to avoid complications.

Unique creeping attachment after autogenous gingival grafting: case report.

This case report describes a unique creeping attachment that developed mesiobucally on a deep, wide recession (3 mm) and extended along the remaining buccal recession (2 mm) of a maxillary first molar with a full-crown gold restoration subsequent to autogenous gingival grafting. Complete coverage of the root by this degree of creeping attachment on a restored multirooted tooth has not previously been reported in the dental literature.

Limitations of panoramic radiographs in predicting mandibular wisdom tooth extraction and the potential of deep learning models to overcome them.

Surgeons routinely interpret preoperative radiographic images for estimating the shape and position of the tooth prior to performing tooth extraction. In this study, we aimed to predict the difficulty of lower wisdom tooth extraction using only panoramic radiographs. Difficulty was evaluated using the modified Parant score. Two oral surgeons (a specialist and a clinical resident) predicted the difficulty level of the test data. This study also aimed to evaluate the performance of a deep learning model in predicting the necessity for tooth separation or bone removal during wisdom tooth extracti

Mandibular morphology clarifies phylogenetic relationships near the origin of crown birds.

BACKGROUND: The phylogenetic relationships of fossil birds near the origin of the avian crown group remain debated, in part due to a limited amount of character evidence from incomplete fossils. The avian lower jaw provides a potentially rich source of additional character data, yet fusion of the individual bony elements composing the avian post-dentary complex has impeded efforts to explore its phylogenetic signal. Here, we use high-resolution µCT-scanning to separate the individual bony elements of the mandibles of several immature crown birds and key fossil taxa, and use those data to asses

Management of Amelogenesis Imperfecta: A 15-Year Case History of Two Siblings.

OBJECTIVE: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a heterogenous genetic disorder that interferes with normal enamel formation in the absence of systemic disorders. The patients' main concerns are caries susceptibility, poor esthetics, and generalized sensitivity. There is a broad clinical spectrum, from discolorations to consequent enamel alterations. This case report describes the 15-year case study and the full-mouth rehabilitation of two siblings affected by a hypocalcified AI. Clinical Considerations: In these two patients, conservative care with stainless steel crowns and direct composite resto

Three-dimensional finite element analysis and comparison of stress distribution in overdentures supported with bar attachments and telescopic crowns.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which one of the overdenture (OD) retainers was more beneficial to the abutments--the bar or the telescopic crown--and if a tooth could be used as an OD abutment when the supporting bone decreased to half of the root. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The three-dimensional finite element method was used to investigate the stress distribution in a mandible with an overdenture supported by the roots of two canines. The two teeth were either connected with a bar attachment or restored with telescopic crowns, and were then restored with a complete overdenture. For each type of supers

Coronectomy in Lower Third Molar Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Coronectomy is an alternative approach to the complete removal of an impacted mandibular third molar. The present study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare coronectomy with extraction concerning complications associated with the inferior alveolar nerve injury (IANI). METHODS: This review followed the principles of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. We conducted a comprehensive literature search of 5 databases according to PRISMA guidelines. Research articles published in English before April 30, 2024 were reviewed. The keywords consisted of "coronectomy and

Coronectomy for high-risk mandibular third molars: neuroprotection efficacy, long-term outcomes, and clinical controversies.

Coronectomy, a surgical procedure involving intentional crown removal with root retention of mandibular third molars at high risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury, represents a validated nerve-sparing alternative to complete extraction. This review summarizes evidence demonstrating its superior neuroprotective efficacy: Coronectomy reduces inferior alveolar nerve injury risk by 87% (0%-0.65% vs. 3.7%-19% in conventional extraction), with significantly lower rates of permanent sensory deficit (0.6% vs. 0.9%). Long-term outcomes (>5 years) reveal predictable root migration (>90% of cases; mean

Interdisciplinary treatment of ankylosed upper central incisors with an anterior vertical ridge defect: A case report.

This case report describes the successful 10-years interdisciplinary treatment of ankylosed upper central incisors with an anterior vertical ridge defect. This treatment was challenging as ankylosis was present before the growth spurt. Orthodontic treatment in association with decoronation, a xenogeneic bone graft, an autogenous sub-epithelial connective tissue graft, and implant placement were performed to correct the vertical ridge defect and to re-establish appropriate function, gingival health, and aesthetics. Decoronation performed during the growth spurt was the key to avoiding alveolar

Erupted complex odontoma delayed eruption of permanent molar.

Odontomas, benign tumors that develop in the jaw, rarely erupt into the oral cavity. We report an erupted odontoma which delayed eruption of the first molar. The patient was a 10-year-old Japanese girl who came to our hospital due to delayed eruption of the right maxillary first molar. All the deciduous teeth had been shed. The second premolar on the right side had erupted, but not the first molar. Slight inflammation of the alveolar mucosa around the first molar had exposed a tooth-like, hard tissue. Panoramic radiography revealed a radiopaque mass indicating a lesion approximately 1 cm in di

Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption as an entity of occult caries.

"Occult" or "hidden" caries refers to occlusal caries which is not diagnosed clinically because the occlusal surface appears ostensibly intact, and radiographs show radiolucencies in dentin. The prevalence of occult caries has been reported to range from 2.2% to over 50% of permanent molars. In spite of its relatively high prevalence, the etiology and pathogenesis of occult caries remain unclear. The author hypothesizes that occult lesions could have resulted from processes which are pre-eruptive or post-eruptive. Pre-eruptive processes include intracoronal resorption of unerupted teeth, and t
