OBJECTIVE: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) comprises defects in hair, teeth, and sweat glands. Disturbances in other ectodermal tissues have been associated with the condition. Our objective was to examine ectodermal craniofacial structures histologically in a fetus with HED and to compare the findings to similar structures in normal control fetuses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A male fetus diagnosed with HED was therapeutically aborted in the 15th week of gestation. One male and two female healthy fetuses were used as normal controls. All fetuses were examined with parental consent, and h

Dentinogenesis is being used as a model for understanding the biomineralization process. The odontoblasts synthesize a structural matrix comprised of Type I collagen fibrils which define the basic architecture of the tissue. The odontoblasts also synthesize and deliver a number of dentin-specific acidic macromolecules into the extracellular compartment. These acidic macromolecules may be involved in regulating the ordered deposition of hydroxyapatite crystals within the matrix. AG1 is the first tooth-specific acidic macromolecule to have been cloned and sequenced. To identify which cells of th

Stem cell technology has been a great hope for the treatment of many common problems such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, cancer, and tissue regeneration. Therefore, the main challenge in hard tissue engineering is to make a successful combination of stem cells and efficient inductors in the concept of stem cell differentiation into odontogenic and osteogenic cell types. Although some boron derivatives have been reported to promote bone and teeth growth in vivo, the molecular mechanism of bone formation has not been elucidated yet. Different concentrations of sodium pent

Interglobular dentine (IGD) is an area of poorly mineralized dentine matrix. It has been reported that there is an association between the retraction of odontoblast processes (OP) and the formation of IGD. A variation of the extent of OP has been described depending on the region of the tooth and age. This study aimed to find out the regional distribution of IGD in human teeth to observe any association between the extent of OP and the pattern of distribution of IGD. Ground sections were prepared from 52 extracted permanent teeth and the presence of IGD was observed in different regions of the

Young patients often require fixed bridgework or orthodontic therapy in cases of traumatic tooth loss or congenitally missing teeth. Dental implants represent an alternative to the more conventional treatment methods. We report positive experience over a seven-year period with 42 titanium Ha-Ti implants in 34 patients aged 9 to 18 years. Fourteen implants were placed into prepared tooth sockets immediately after traumatic luxation of anterior teeth in 12 patients aged 9 to 18 years (median age 16). An additional 22 patients (median age 15.5, range 11 to 18) also received implants (N = 28), but

BACKGROUND: This case report describes a rare condition of palatal radicular multigrooves on teeth 11 and 21 with severe periodontal defects and the findings at 3-year follow-up.
METHOD: Radiculoplasty using hand curettes and rotary burs were used to remove the multigrooves on the root surfaces and change the wrinkled root form to the relatively flat and smooth normal root morphology. Minor tooth movement and frenotomy were performed for a diastema between teeth 11 and 21. Supportive periodontal therapy started immediately after completion of the active treatment.
RESULTS: Improved healthy p

Background and Objectives: Caries in primary teeth are characterized by rapid and often asymptomatic progression, with early dentin involvement and potential extension to the pulp. Untreated lesions may lead to complications that affect the development of the permanent dentition. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical and biological effectiveness of chemo-mechanical controlled caries excavation using Brix 3000 compared to conventional treatment in primary molars over an 18-month follow-up period. Materials and Methods: A total of 82 children aged 4-7 years were included

In the current odontological era, carious lesions are removed while tooth tissue is preserved. Most of these ideals are met by chemomechanical caries removal (CMCR) methods, which are easy and comfortable to use, differentiate and eliminate infected tissues, minimize pressure, vibration and heat, and are cost-effective. This study examines the efficacy of commercially available CMCR agents, namely Papacarie®, Carie-Care™ and BRIX3000™, and a conventional hand instrumentation method for caries removal in deciduous molars in terms of time consumption, ease of application, and pain perception. PURPOSE: To directly compare the survival rates of three incomplete caries removal techniques that differed in the amount of caries removal and the base material used.
METHODS: Ninety-six primary molars with asymptomatic deep caries or reversible pulpitis were randomly assigned to three groups: (1) indirect pulp treatment (IPT); (2) minimal caries removal with both resin-modified glass ionomer base material and luting cement (MCRB/L); and (3) minimal caries removal with only resin-modified glass ionomer luting cement (MCRL). The treatments were followed clinically and radiographically for two

In this case report, we describe the successful long-term treatment of a patient with dental agenesis. The initial treatment plan included an orthodontic phase to provide adequate space for replacing missing lateral incisors with implants. However, because of some complications encountered after 2 years of orthodontic treatment, a revised treatment plan was considered to achieve functional and esthetic goals. The patient was completely satisfied 5 years after being treated with two 2-unit cantilevered resin-bonded fixed partial dentures supported by the cuspids. This conservative treatment pla

The influence of Er:YAG laser irradiation on periodontal tissues along the root surface and apical region during root canal preparation was histologically evaluated using experimentally infected root canals of rats. Eighty experimentally mesial infected root canals of mandibular first molars in rats were divided into four groups. In three groups, root canals were irradiated using an Er:YAG laser at 2 Hz with 34, 68, or 102 mJ/pulse for 30 s. Non-irradiated canals served as controls. The influence of laser irradiation on periodontal tissues along the root surface and apical area was evaluated h

Taurodontism is an abnormal morphological trait of tooth shape, which usually occurs in multi-rooted teeth. An enlarged pulp chamber and apical displacement of the pulpal floor are characteristics. Endodontic treatment ofa taurodont tooth may be very difficult because it requires special care in identifying and treatment of the complex root canal system. The endodontic treatment ofa taurodont maxillary first molar is presented.

Formocresol pulpotomy (FP) in the United States is most frequently used to treat asymptomatic caries near the pulp in primary teeth. Indirect pulp therapy (IPT) is also indicated and has a significantly higher long-term success. Pulpotomy is thought to be indicated for primary teeth with carious pulp exposures, but research shows the majority of such teeth are nonvital or questionable for treatment with vital pulp therapy. IPT has a significantly higher success in treating all primary first molars, but especially those with reversible pulpitis compared with FP. The purpose of this article was

Success in endodontic therapy often depends on the removal of the critical concentration of pulp tissue or necrotic debris within the root canal system. The best method to ensure this objective is to locate and instrument all of the canals in the root of the tooth. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of root canal morphology is essential to reduce the chances of failure. The purpose of this article is to report a case of mandibular second bicuspid with four distinct canals.

A histological study of the response in the pulps of human teeth to cervical restorations made with a composite resin following etching of the enamel for 2 minutes with 50 per cent phosphoric acid showed moderate inflammation after 14 days. Three specimens showed normal structure after 98 days. Teeth restored without etching showed only slight inflammation.

We report data on 3 members of a family affected by a dominantly inherited disorder closely resembling Roussy-Levy syndrome (RLS). Electrophysiological findings showed a marked decrease of motor and sensory conduction velocities and EMG signs of mild neurogenic damage. Light and electron microscopy of sural nerve biopsy showed a hypertrophic neuropathy with diffuse onion-bulb formations and marked decrease of large size fibers. Teased fiber preparations evidenced reduced internodal lengths and segmental demyelination. Other data from the literature on RLS are reviewed and discussed. The hypoth

The impaction of the upper canine is the second most common type of developmental anomaly following the impaction of the third molars. The authors have diagnosed the impaction of the left upper canine in the case of a 17 year-old female patient. The failure of the eruption resulting in tooth spacing of the 23 teeth mainly caused esthetical problems for the young patient and her firm request was the treatment of the spacing caused by the residual canine. The authors on the basis of the clinical and radiological examinations prepared the plans of combination therapy of oral surgery and orthodont

The aim of this study was to determine, the effect of physiological root resorption on the histological structure of healthy primary tooth pulp. Fourteen canine teeth, which needed to be extracted for orthodontic purposes and in which resorption had just begun (1st group, resorption did not exceed 1/3 of root length) or was in advanced resorption stage (2nd group, resorption was between 1/2 and 2/3 of root length), were used for this study. After the extraction of the teeth, they were prepared for histological examination. Then the samples were examined using light microscopy. The result no di
