Flux measurements of NOx, O3 and Ox: Emission characteristics, inventory validation and titration effects.

As the precursor of ozone and secondary particles, the incomplete knowledge of NOx emission dynamics constrains our ability to fully elucidate air pollution formation. Flux measurements offer new insights into NOx emissions and titration effects. Here, we present eddy covariance flux measurements of NOx, O3 and Ox in urban Beijing during the summer of 2023. The measured NOx flux was positive with the 24-h average of 10.4 ± 10.7 nmol/m2/s, which is at the lower end of the flux reported in urban regions. The low NOx emission strength in urban Beijing may be related to the successful control meas

Ruthenium-based compounds and tumour growth control (review).

Heavy metals have often been represented, as an uncertain entity related to renal and other risks of toxicity. In favour of this thought there are several lines of evidence, first of all traffic pollution, other evidence that metals such as arsenite, mercury, cadmium or even iron or radioactive heavy metals, that may be introduced into the body by accident, have been responsible of well known pathologies (for example saturnism with lead) or acute toxicity. Therefore, the biological and medical literature have debated on this subject, mainly from the toxicological point of view, rather than stu

Factors influencing relationships between personal and ambient concentrations of gaseous and particulate pollutants.

Previous exposure studies have shown considerable inter-subject variability in personal-ambient associations. This paper investigates exposure factors that may be responsible for inter-subject variability in these personal-ambient associations. The personal and ambient data used in this paper were collected as part of a personal exposure study conducted in Boston, MA, during 1999-2000. This study was one of a group of personal exposure panel studies funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Exposure Research Laboratory to address areas of exposure assessment warranting furt

Air quality and health implications of exposure to ultrafine particle pollution.

AIMS: Ultrafine particles (UFPs) smaller than 100 nm are ubiquitous in polluted air. Although they carry little mass, UFPs have a large exposure surface area, can bypass respiratory defences, translocate into the brain and bloodstream, and impact the heart and other organs. Here, we assess the role of UFPs in air quality and the health burden they impose. METHODS AND RESULTS: We integrated Earth observations with machine learning to estimate long-term UFP exposure at 1 km resolution, demonstrating that they pose a major air quality concern in urban environments, with annual mean concentration

Car free cities: Pathway to healthy urban living.

BACKGROUND: Many cities across the world are beginning to shift their mobility solution away from the private cars and towards more environmentally friendly and citizen-focused means. Hamburg, Oslo, Helsinki, and Madrid have recently announced their plans to become (partly) private car free cities. Other cities like Paris, Milan, Chengdu, Masdar, Dublin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Bogota, and Hyderabad have measures that aim at reducing motorized traffic including implementing car free days, investing in cycling infrastructure and pedestrianization, restricting parking spaces and considerable incre

Exploring the spatial variation of mercury in the Gulf of St. Lawrence using northern gannets as fish samplers.

Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous and pervasive environmental contaminant with detrimental effects on wildlife, which originates from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Its distribution within ecosystems is influenced by various biogeochemical processes, making it crucial to elucidate the factors driving this variability. To explore these factors, we employed an innovative method to use northern gannets (Morus bassanus) as biological samplers of regurgitated fish in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We assessed fish total Hg (THg) concentrations in relation to their geographical catch location as well

In vitro and in vivo toxicity of urban and rural particulate matter from California.

Particulate matter (PM) varies in chemical composition and mass concentration based on location, source, and particle size. This study sought to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of coarse (PM10-2.5) and fine (PM25) PM samples collected at 5 diverse sites within California. Coarse and fine PM samples were collected simultaneously at 2 rural and 3 urban sites within California during the summer. A human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell line (HPMEC-ST1.6R) was exposed to PM suspensions (50 μg/mL) and analyzed for reactive oxygen species (ROS) after 5 hours of treatment. In addit

Overview of surface measurements and spatial characterization of submicrometer particulate matter during the DISCOVER-AQ 2013 campaign in Houston, TX.

UNLABELLED: The sources of submicrometer particulate matter (PM1) remain poorly characterized in the industrialized city of Houston, TX. A mobile sampling approach was used to characterize PM1 composition and concentration across Houston based on high-time-resolution measurements of nonrefractory PM1 and trace gases during the DISCOVER-AQ Texas 2013 campaign. Two pollution zones with marked differences in PM1 levels, character, and dynamics were established based on cluster analysis of organic aerosol mass loadings sampled at 16 sites. The highest PM1 mass concentrations (average 11.6 ± 5.7 µg

From Air to Brain: Environmental Nanoparticles as Modifiable Risk Factors for Neurodevelopmental, Neurodegenerative, and Mental Disorders.

Ultrafine particles (≤100 nm) and other environmental nanoparticles have emerged as biologically active pollutants that can cross biological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier and the placenta. Growing evidence implicates ultrafine particles in a wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions, yet their effects remain poorly integrated into clinical and public health frameworks. In this review, we distinguish between size-defined ultrafine particles (UFPs, ≤100 nm), composition-defined environmental nanoparticles originating from combustion and secondary formation processes, and engineered

Associations of the objective built environment along the route to school with children's modes of commuting: A multilevel modelling analysis (the SLIC study).

As active commuting levels continue to decline among primary schoolchildren, evidence about which built environmental characteristics influence walking or cycling to school remains inconclusive and is strongly context-dependent. This study aimed to identify the objective built environmental drivers of, and barriers to, active commuting to school for a multi-ethnic sample of 1,889 healthy primary schoolchildren (aged 5-11) in London, UK. Using cross-sectional multilevel ordered logistic regression modelling, supported by the spatial exploration of built environmental characteristics through car

Exposure to airborne metals and particulate matter and risk for youth adjudicated for criminal activity.

Antisocial behavior is a product of multiple interacting sociohereditary variables, yet there is increasing evidence that metal exposure, particularly, manganese and lead, play a role in its epigenesis. Other metals, such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and mercury, and exposure to traffic-related air pollution, such as fine particulate matter (≤2.5 μm) have been associated with neurological deficits, yet largely unexplored with respect to their relationship with delinquent behavior. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ecological relationship between county-wide reported airborne emiss

The London low emission zone baseline study.

On February 4, 2008, the world's largest low emission zone (LEZ) was established. At 2644 km2, the zone encompasses most of Greater London. It restricts the entry of the oldest and most polluting diesel vehicles, including heavy-goods vehicles (haulage trucks), buses and coaches, larger vans, and minibuses. It does not apply to cars or motorcycles. The LEZ scheme will introduce increasingly stringent Euro emissions standards over time. The creation of this zone presented a unique opportunity to estimate the effects of a stepwise reduction in vehicle emissions on air quality and health. Before

Inhalation of air polluted with gasoline vapours alters the levels of amino acid neurotransmitters in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and hypothalamus of the rat.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to investigate the impact of exposure to the vapours of two kinds of gasoline, a widely used fuel for the internal combustion engines on the levels of the amino acid neurotransmitters of the rat brain. Recent studies provide strong evidence for a causative role for traffic-related air pollution on morbidity outcomes as well as premature death (Health Effects Institute, 2009; Levy et al., 2010; von Stackelberg et al., 2013). Exposure to the vapours of gasoline or its constituents may be accidental, occupational by workers at fuel stations and factories, or th

Fractionation of heavy metal(loid)s and PAH contamination in urban park surface dust: implications for children's health risk.

Urban parks are important public environments where children may be exposed to multiple contaminants through frequent contact with surface dust. However, the cumulative health risks associated with combined exposure to heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) remain insufficiently understood, as these contaminants are often assessed separately, and the health risks of HMs are commonly evaluated using total rather than fraction-based concentrations. This study integrated multivariate characterization and source apportionment of co-occurring HMs and PAHs, HM geochemic

Does urban environment at birth and adolescence affect cardiometabolic morbidity in adolescents? Results from the PARIS birth cohort study.

This study aims to examine the association between urban environment characteristics at birth and at adolescence and cardiometabolic health in adolescents from the PARIS birth cohort. Body mass index z-scores (BMIz) trajectories from birth to adolescence, weight status and two cardiometabolic profiles at adolescence were determined. Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure was estimated by a nitrogen oxides air dispersion model. The French Deprivation Index, walkability percentage, and the use of green spaces were considered. Built environment typologies were identified by a cluster analy

Tire wear particles in aquatic environments: From biota to ecosystem impacts.

Tire wear particles (TWPs), mainly generated through friction between tires and road surfaces, represent a major source of traffic-related microplastic pollution, posing threats to biota and ecosystem functions. These particles are a complex mixture of toxic compounds, including heavy metals (e.g., zinc) and organic compounds (e.g., 6-PPD), and their diverse leachates exacerbate their ecological impacts. This review collates current knowledge on the occurrence of TWPs and their leachates in aquatic systems, emphasizing their toxicological effects on species and cascading ecological consequence
