Glycogen hepatopathy is the pathological overloading of hepatocytes with glycogen that is associated with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. Clinically, it presents with abdominal discomfort, tender hepatomegaly and elevated transaminases. In this report, we describe our experience with two cases of type I diabetes mellitus and glycogen hepatopathy. The patients underwent isolated pancreas transplantation, following which, we have been able to demonstrate complete histological resolution of glycogen hepatopathy associated with control of glucose metabolism.

A 45-year-old male presented with severe abdominal pain, hyperamylasaemia and a bulky pancreas. In addition, he had deep jaundice and markedly raised serum transaminases, and his serum was positive for IgM anti-hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies. The common aetiologies of acute pancreatitis were excluded. The patient ran a benign course for both acute viral hepatitis and acute pancreatitis, and recovered completely. Acute pancreatitis caused by HEV infection has been reported only occasionally.

A 65-year-old woman treated with etretinate for pityriasis rubra pilaris developed chronic active hepatitis. The elevated transaminases were noted 2 months after initiation of therapy and peaked 2 months after discontinuation of etretinate. The spectrum of liver toxicity induced by etretinate is reviewed. We suggest that reported cases of retinoid-induced liver disease can be divided into four distinct categories: nonspecific reactive hepatitis, acute hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, and severe fibrosis or cirrhosis.

Toxicity of the cells of a newly established axenic Microcystis aeruginosa K-139 strain to mice was studied. LD50 of the cells harvested in the mid-log phase was 7.3 mg/kg. Two ewes died after being fed rabbit ration and mineral salts designated for cows. This food is known to contain copper levels above that indicated for sheep. Serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and serum glutamic oxaloacetic and pyruvic transaminase (SGOT, SGPT) levels were determined in 61 patients with leptospirosis and 16 with viral hepatitis during the acute phase of illness. We present here a case of granulomatous hepatitis (GH) secondary to long-term use of allopurinol.
