The effect of UFTM therapy on primary and metastatic colon cancer from the same human xenotransplanted into nude mice.

Successful simultaneous transplants of a cancer of the ascending colon from a 60 year old woman, taken from 3 sites: the primary focus, a lymph node metastasis, and a hepatic metastasis, into nude mice yielded KHC (-P, -N, -H) strains. These three strains were compared under uniform conditions of nude mouse transplantation from the standpoints of morphological variation, growth rate, and sensitivity to chemotherapy. The results showed no major differences in morphology or growth rate. However, an effect on chemotherapeutic sensitivity was observed in KHC-P and KHC-N, with reduction rates of 25

Comparing the effectiveness of various cumulative doses of cisplatin in treating locally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer during the period of intensity-modulated radiotherapy: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: In the age of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), the best cumulative cisplatin dose (CCD) for concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer (LA-NPC) is still up for debate. In order to guide clinical dose decisions, this meta-analysis sought to examine the effects of various CCD on survival outcomes. METHODS: A thorough search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library through December 2025. Randomized controlled trials or observational studies comparing CCD thresholds (≥200 mg/m2 vs. <200 mg/m2) in IMRT-treated patients we

Surgical versus nonsurgical treatment of acute Achilles tendon rupture: a meta-analysis of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND: Surgical repair is a common method of treatment of acute Achilles rupture in North America because, despite a higher risk of overall complications, it has been believed to offer a reduced risk of rerupture. However, more recent trials, particularly those using functional bracing with early range of motion, have challenged this belief. The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare surgical treatment and conservative treatment with regard to the rerupture rate, the overall rate of other complications, return to work, calf circumference, and functional outcomes, as well as to examine t

Angiotensin Receptor Blockades Effect on Peripheral Muscular and Central Aortic Arterial Stiffness: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials and Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Previous clinical trials have demonstrated the impact of blocking upstream renin-angiotensin-axis with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) on arterial stiffness as evaluated by pulse-wave velocity (PWV). We ran a meta-analysis to evaluate the anti-stiffness effect of powerful downstream angiotensin receptor blockades (ARBs) on peripheral and central arterial stiffness (brachial to ankle, ba-PWV; carotid to femoral, cf-PWV, respectively), using a systematic review to assess the clinical arterial stiffness issues. METHODS: For our study, we searched the PubMed and Cochr

Blood pressure response with fixed-dose combination therapy: comparing hydrochlorothiazide with amlodipine through individual-level meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although fixed-dose combination drug therapy is commonly used to treat hypertension, the efficacy of head-to-head comparisons of dual fixed-dose combinations has not been well described. We hypothesized that when used in combination with an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) olmesartan medoxomil, hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) will be as effective as the dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB) amlodipine to lower both clinic and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP). Furthermore, we hypothesized that response to ARB along with HCTZ or ARB along with CCB may be heterogeneous dependi

Advances in understanding the impact of sex on kidney health and disease.

Biological differences exist between males and females in kidney structure and function, leading to sex heterogeneity in the presentation and outcomes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and response to novel therapeutics. However, treatment guidelines ignore sex-specific differences. This Series paper provides an integrated discussion of the complexity of sex differences in the context of kidney health and disease, from biology through clinical characteristics, treatment, evidence generation, and reporting. Throughout, we consider the effect of genetics, epigenetic regulation, and the role of sex
