Relevance of polyclonal antibody formation to the development of autoimmunity : the model of African trypanosomiasis.

There is an induction of anti-DNA antibodies in mice following the administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharides, Dextran sulfate and PPD, which is closely associated with the property of these substances to trigger a polyclonal B cell activation. In the experiments model of African trypanosomiasis there is also an intense polyclonal antibody synthesis paralleled by the formation of several autoantibodies: anti-DNA, anti-bromelain treated mouse red blood cells and antithymocyte antibodies.

The economic effects of trypanosomiasis in sheep and goats at a range research station in Kenya.

A study on the economic effects of naturally acquired trypanosomiasis in sheep and goats over a period of 35 weeks under range conditions in the Kiboko area of Kenya indicated that the financial loss from reduced weight gain and death amounted to 36.2 and 62.9 Kenya shillings per head for goats and sheep respectively. This was derived from the weight loss through death together with the reduced weight gain of the survivors compared with treated animals. The study also compared the efficacy of 3 drug regimes in goats and suggests that although quinapyramine (prophylactic) B.vet.C. provided the …

Mel B toxicity in human trypanosomiasis in the Gboko endemic area of Nigeria.

Nine cases of Mel B (a melaminyl arsenical used in treating sleeping sickness patients who have developed central nervous system involvement) treated patients who developed reactions to the drug are described. They all developed high temperatures, pyrexia, diarrhoea, vomitting or itching and some had convulsions. Three of the nine described patients died. It is recommended that extra care and caution is needed while treating patients with Mel B.

Human African Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness)-Epidemiology, Clinical Manifestations, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, is a vector-borne parasitic neglected tropical disease (NTD) endemic in sub-Saharan Africa. This review aims to enhance our understanding of HAT and provide valuable insights to combat this significant public health issue by synthesizing the latest research and evidence. RECENT FINDINGS: HAT has reached a historical < 1000 cases in 2018. In patients without neurologic symptoms and signs, the likelihood of a severe meningoencephalitic stage is deemed low, obviating the need for a lumbar puncture to guide t…
