Rosiglitazone (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma) counters hypertension and adverse cardiac and vascular remodeling in 2K1C hypertensive rats.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) agonists have been shown controlling blood pressure (BP) in spontaneously hypertensive rats and salt-sensitive hypertensive rats. The present study aims to test the hypothesis that PPAR-gamma agonist rosiglitazone has beneficial effects on cardiac and vascular adverse remodeling in a model of renovascular hypertension (two-kidneys-one-clip, 2K1C model). Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n=6): SHAM group, 2K1C, 2K1C+HYD (treated with hydralazine for 5 weeks) and 2K1C+ROSI (treated with rosiglitazone for 5 weeks). The left ve

Traumatic vertebral artery injury: detailed clinicopathologic and morphometric analysis of 6 cases.

Traumatic vertebral artery injury is frequently fatal from what may often be mild trauma to the head and neck. Detailed examination of vertebral arteries is not frequently undertaken at autopsy: the structural and histologic changes that may be relevant to the development of the injury are not well known. We sampled vertebral arteries bilaterally from 6 forensic autopsies (age = 26-50 years; 3 of 6 suffered from alcohol toxicity) with documented intradural vertebral artery injuries, and 4 nonvertebral-artery-injury-related autopsies (age = 19-70 years). Intradural, dural, and extradural compon

Inflammation predicts accelerated brachial arterial wall changes in patients with recent-onset rheumatoid arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with recent-onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have impaired brachial artery endothelial function compared with controls matched for age, sex and cardiovascular risk factors. The present study examined endothelium-dependent (flow-mediated dilatation (FMD)) and independent (glyceryl trinitrate (GTN)-mediated dilatation (GMD)) structural responses in early RA patients, and determined progress over one year. METHODS: Brachial artery FMD and GMD and carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) were studied using ultrasound in 20 patients diagnosed with early RA in whom symptoms had b

Traumatic type B aortic dissection causing near total occlusion of aortic lumen and diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiography: A case report.

A true dissection of the descending thoracic aorta resulting from blunt chest trauma is a relatively rare injury compared with aortic transsection and occurs mostly in the region of the aortic isthmus. It is a life-threatening condition that requires rapid and accurate diagnosis. In this case, we report a patient with Stanford type B aortic dissection caused by decelerating trauma of the chest in a motor vehicle accident causing near total occlusion of the aortic lumen. The diagnosis was made by transthoracic echocardiography and confirmed by aortography.

The degree of neointimal formation after stent placement in atherosclerotic rabbit iliac arteries is dependent on the underlying plaque.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of stent placement on the underlying arterial morphology and the relations of stent-vessel wall interactions with subsequent neointimal formation in an atherosclerotic artery. Seven New Zealand White rabbits with experimentally induced atherosclerosis underwent balloon angioplasty (n = 7) and stent placement after balloon angioplasty (n = 7) in the iliac arteries. Histologic analysis of the treated arteries was performed at 28 days to assess device interactions with the artery and the pattern of the neointimal response. The area within the

Hyperpolarization induced by vasoactive substances in intact guinea-pig endocardial endothelial cells.

1. The responses of guinea-pig endocardial endothelial (EE) cells to various vasoactive substances were investigated in either the small tissue preparation or freshly isolated cells using the patch clamp technique. 2. The mean resting potential of the EE cell was -44 mV in the small tissue preparation, and applications of ATP, ADP, AMP, adenosine, histamine and substance P induced transient hyperpolarizations of -22, -21, -9, -10, -23 and -15 mV, respectively. The membrane potential of EE cells failed to respond to acetylcholine, bradykinin, thrombin, atrial natriuretic peptide, vasopressin an

Pathophysiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia. X: Localization of nitric oxide synthase in the intima of pulmonary artery trunks of lambs with surgically created congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

The pathophysiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) results from a combination of pulmonary hypoplasia, pulmonary hypertension, and surfactant deficiency. Previously we demonstrated that inhaled nitric oxide (NO), a known vasodilator, only improves oxygenation and decreases pulmonary artery pressures when the lamb model of CDH is pretreated with exogenous surfactant. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in endothelial cells is responsible for the production of NO, a mediator of smooth muscle cell relaxation. Pulmonary hypertension in CDH may result from a defect in the endogenous production of

Appearance/Image- and Performance-Enhancing Drug Users: A Forensic Approach.

Image- and performance-enhancing drugs include a wide range of substances used to promote physical changes to enhance appearance. Anabolic androgen steroids are the most widely used image- and performance-enhancing drugs along with a wide variety of additional substances. The aim of this study was to identify the pathological changes pertaining to the cardiovascular system possibly involved in the death and characterize the substances associated with steroid use and their possible role in the death. A series of deaths involving image- and performance-enhancing drug users were selected. Nandrol

Microvascular function predicts cardiovascular events in primary prevention: long-term results from the Firefighters and Their Endothelium (FATE) study.

BACKGROUND: Biomarkers of atherosclerosis may refine clinical decision making in individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease. The purpose of the study was to determine the prognostic significance of endothelial function and other vascular markers in apparently healthy men. METHODS AND RESULTS: The cohort consisted of 1574 men (age, 49.4 years) free of vascular disease. Measurements included flow-mediated dilation and its microvascular stimulus, hyperemic velocity, carotid intima-media thickness, and C-reactive protein. Cox proportional hazard models evaluated the relationship between vascul

Preserved structural and functional characteristics of common carotid artery in properly treated normoglycemic women with gestational diabetes mellitus.

Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at high risk of subsequently developing type 2 diabetes mellitus which is an important cardiovascular risk factor. We have evaluated whether preclinical morphological and functional arterial changes are present in GDM. Diameter, intima-media thickness (IMT), intima-media cross-section area (IMCSA) and elasticity features (compliance, distensibility coefficient, circumferential strain, stiffness index (SI) α and β, incremental elastic modulus) of the common carotid arteries (CCA) were studied in the 3rd trimester in 25 women with GDM, and 17 no

Comparison of intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery in dialysis and kidney transplant recipient patients.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular events are a major cause of mortality and morbidity of chronic renal failure causing 40% to 50% of all deaths in these patients. The intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery is used to predict atherosclerosis. To assess the effect of early renal transplant on the vascular atherosclerosis, we compared the common carotid intima-media thickness between dialysis and transplant patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 75 kidney transplant recipients and 75 dialysis patients were assessed in a subspecialized renal and urethral diseases cente

Accelerated atherosclerotic calcification and Monckeberg's sclerosis: a continuum of advanced vascular pathology in chronic kidney disease.

Autopsy studies have demonstrated the near universal presence of fatty streaks and fibroatheromas in the general population from which patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) arise. The vast majority of patients with CKD have multiple conventional cardiovascular risk factors. Vascular atherosclerotic calcification develops in most patients as they transition from the general population to significant CKD as part of cholesterol crystallization within atherosclerotic lesions. Once present, however, atherosclerotic medial calcification can become prominent and has been previously identified as

Intakes of long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and fish in relation to measurements of subclinical atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Data on the relations of different types of fish meals and long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to measures of atherosclerosis are sparse. OBJECTIVE: We examined intakes of long-chain n-3 PUFAs and fish in relation to clinical measures of subclinical atherosclerosis. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a multiethnic group of 5,488 adults aged 45-84 y and free of clinical cardiovascular disease. Diet was assessed by using self-administered food-frequency questionnaires. Subclinical atherosclerosis was determined by measurements of common carotid intima-m

Cardiac and vascular hypertrophy in Fabry disease: evidence for a new mechanism independent of blood pressure and glycosphingolipid deposition.

OBJECTIVE: Fabry disease is an X-linked disorder resulting from alpha-galactosidase A deficiency. The cardiovascular findings include left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and increased intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery (CCA IMT). The current study examined the possible correlation between these parameters. To corroborate these clinical findings in vitro, plasma from Fabry patients was tested for possible proliferative effect on rat vascular smooth muscle cells (vascular smooth muscle cell [VSMC]) and mouse neonatal cardiomyocytes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty male and 38 female

Lipid profile and carotid intima-media thickness in a prospective cohort of very preterm subjects at age 19 years: effects of early growth and current body composition.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is associated with prenatal and infancy growth. However, the relative importance of these time periods for the CVD risk is uncertain. To elucidate this, we tested in a very preterm cohort the effects of birth weight for gestational age and weight gain between birth and 3 mo post-term (early postnatal weight gain) and between 3 mo and 1 y post-term (late infancy weight gain) on the lipid profile and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) at age 19 y. A less favorable lipid profile was strongly associated with higher current body mass index (BMI), greater waist c

Pulmonary vascular changes induced by congenital obstruction of pulmonary venous return.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary venous obstruction (PVO) induces pulmonary arterial hypertension, as well as pulmonary venous hypertension, and jeopardizes the repair of cardiac lesions. METHODS: Four cases of congenital mitral stenosis and 4 cases of cor triatriatum (Lucas type A), ages ranging from 2 months to 16 years, were histologically examined on pulmonary vasculature. Histometrical analysis was performed on medial thickness and intimal changes of both pulmonary arteries and veins. For comparison, the examination of pulmonary vasculature in ventricular septal defect (VSD) cases was also performe

Analysis of risk factors associated with intimal hyperplasia in arteriovenous fistulas among patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) intimal hyperplasia (IH) is a major pathological basis of AVF stenosis and dysfunction in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. This single-center retrospective observational cohort study enrolled adult hemodialysis patients with a native AVF at our institution between May 2021 and May 2023. IH was determined primarily by duplex ultrasound (DUS) evidence of pathologic venous intimal thickening and/or hemodynamically significant stenosis attributable to IH, with angiographic confirmation when clinically indicated. Demographic characteristics, hemodialysis vin
