AIM: To evaluate the relationship between Candida and peptic ulcer.
METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients with untreated peptic ulcer (81 with duodenal ulcer and 19 with gastric ulcer) were studied using histopathology, culture and fungal serology. Twenty subjects with non-ulcer dyspepsia were taken as controls.

A Quality of Life questionnaire was administered to 200 duodenal ulcer patients taking daily H2 antagonists and compared with the responses given by 50 newly diagnosed duodenal ulcer patients. Assessment involved 17 questions which attempted to measure ulcer symptoms, emotional and social function. Age, sex and percentage of smokers were identical in the two groups. Retrospectively analysis of 2015 episodes of duodenal ulcer (DU) hemorrhage, and 874 episodes of gastric ulcer (GU) hemorrhage over a 5-year period (April, 1987-March, 1992) evaluated seasonal incidence. A high incidence of peptic ulcer was found in a retrospective study of 199 Bulgarians with porphyria cutanea tarda. Ulcers were found in 35 patients (17.59%), while its incidence in Bulgaria varies between 2.52 and 3.7%. The effect of verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, was studied against stress (cold restraint), aspirin and pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcers in rats. Verapamil inhibited ulcerogenic response and ulcer index in all the three types of ulcers. Verapamil also decreased total and free gastric acidity without changing gastric secretory volume.
