Mechanistic investigation of ultrasonic demulsification of water-in-oil emulsions.

Oilfield-produced fluids commonly contain high water fractions and form stable water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, complicating downstream treatment and resource recovery. In this paper, experimental characterization and numerical simulation were combined to elucidate the power-dependent mechanism of ultrasound-assisted chemical demulsification. We first optimized ultrasonic (US) power, irradiation time, and demulsifier concentration through an orthogonal experimental design and then conducted single-factor experiments to examine changes in dehydration efficiency, viscosity, and droplet characterist

Bimorph Lithium Niobate Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers.

Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs) are widely utilized in applications that demand mechanical resilience, thermal stability, and compact form factors. Recent efforts have sought to demonstrate that single-crystal lithium niobate (LN) is a promising PMUT material platform, offering high electromechanical coupling ( $\textit {k}^{{2}}$ ) and bidirectional performance. In addition, advances in LN film transfer technology have enabled high-quality periodically poled piezoelectric films (P3F), facilitating a bimorph piezoelectric stack without intermediate electrodes. In thi

Broad tunability of ultrasonic tweezer for multi‑droplet manipulation.

Controllable droplet manipulation is essential for applications from biochemical analysis to soft robotics. Despite significant advances, existing methods struggle to achieve broadly tunable, asynchronous control of multiple droplets, limiting their efficiency in three-dimensional and dynamic environments. Here, we introduce a droplet ultrasonic tweezer (DUT), which leverages broadly tunable acoustic control to enable three-dimensional multi-droplet manipulation and enhance condensing surface renewal. The DUT generates a twin-trap acoustic field from a single phased-array focal point, allowing

Damage of irradiated teeth by ultrasonic scaling: an in vitro study.

PURPOSE: To test whether ultrasonic (US) scaling-induced hard-tissue surface loss on irradiated teeth depends on irradiation dose, type of scaler tip, angulation and orientation and tooth region. METHODS: In vitro study on 24 human molars irradiated with 0, 30, or 70 Gy. US scaling was robot-standardized (force 1 N, tips G6 and P20, angulation 15° and 45°, orientation back and lateral) with medium power and water spray. Surface loss was graded on intraoral scans by three blinded observers on a six-band ordinal 0-5 scale (increasing with loss depth) and analyzed with cumulative-logit ordinal m

[Clinical prospects of passive ultrasonic disinfection in endodontic practice].

The article analyzes the literature on the clinical significance of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI). as a method of increasing the effectiveness of disinfection of the root canal system. The relevance of using PUI in the treatment of complex anatomical forms of root canals is substantiated. The physicohydrodynamic mechanism of action of PUI, which is based on acoustic streaming and cavitation, is discussed. This mechanism enhances the antimicrobial effect of irrigation solutions. Special attention is paid to the specifics of the use of various solutions - sodium hypochlorite, ethylenediami

Diagnostic performance of multiple ultrasonic modalities for prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of Grayscale Ultrasound (GSU), Color Doppler Ultrasound/Power Doppler Ultrasound (CDU/PDU), Transrectal Real-Time Tissue Elastography (TRTE) and Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) in the diagnosis of Prostate Cancer (PCa). METHOD: All analyzed patients underwent GSU, CDU/PDU, TRTE and CEUS examinations before radical prostatectomy. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn, and the Areas Under the Curve (AUCs) were calculated for the four ultrasonic modalities alone and in combination. Binary logistic analysis was used to evaluate the pr

An Approach to the Improvement of Graphene Production by Ultrasonic-Bath Treatment.

In this study, we report the synthesis of few-layer graphene via ultrasonic treatment of a graphite-benzene solution at room temperature. Raman spectroscopy revealed a significant reduction in the intensity ratio of the G and 2D peaks for samples subjected to 20 min of treatment, indicating a decrease in defect density and oxidation. Prolonged treatment times led to fragmentation of the graphene sheets, which facilitated restacking, as evidenced by Raman spectroscopy and microscopy. FTIR analysis confirmed the complete removal of the solvent from the extracted and dried graphene. Additionally,

Detection of Burkholderia gladioli in contaminated ultrasonic coupling agent.

BACKGROUND: In July 2023, Burkholderia gladioli was detected in a patient's ascites specimen. This pathogen had not been detected in the hospital for nearly 3 years. Therefore, an investigation was immediately launched. METHODS: Microbial environmental hygiene samples were collected from the operating room environment, the ultrasonic probe, and ultrasonic coupling agents in the interventional ultrasound department. The quantitative method was used to culture and identify bacterial species. Average Nucleotide Identity was used to compare the similarity of all orthologous protein-coding genes b

Evaluation of Adhesive Joints Using Ultrasonic Rayleigh Waves.

Adhesive joints are non-separable connections that are used in numerous ways in vehicle construction, particularly in buses. The widespread use of adhesive joints makes it necessary to assess their quality, especially under production conditions. The main goal of this study was to develop a mathematical model to estimate the width of the adhesive path in a plywood-adhesive-closed-profile joint based on selected parameters of the ultrasonic surface wave. A digital ultrasonic flaw detector and Rayleigh wave probes were applied. The test involved evaluating different widths of hybrid adhesive and

Noninvasive modulation of essential tremor with focused ultrasonic waves.

Objective: Transcranial focused low-intensity ultrasound has the potential to noninvasively modulate confined regions deep inside the human brain, which could provide a new tool for causal interrogation of circuit function in humans. However, it has been unclear whether the approach is potent enough to modulate behavior.Approach: To test this, we applied low-intensity ultrasound to a deep brain thalamic target, the ventral intermediate nucleus, in three patients with essential tremor.Main results: Brief, 15 s stimulations of the target at 10% duty cycle with low-intensity ultrasound, repeated

The Feasibility of Prenatal Ultrasonic Screening for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.

BACKGROUND: developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition characterized by abnormal hip development in infancy. Early diagnosis allows for effective treatment, while late presentation often necessitates complex surgical interventions. Current recommendations advise screening between the 6th and 8th week postnatal using an ultrasound, typically employing the Graf method. However, there is no universal consensus on whether ultrasound screening significantly increases treatment likelihood compared to clinical examination-guided ultrasound. This study aims to explore the feasibility of p
