Prostatic Artery Embolization: A Viable Option for Catheter Independence after Failed Medical Management of Urinary Retention.

This report aimed to evaluate trial without catheter (TWOC) success after prostatic artery embolization (PAE) in catheterized men who had failed medical management and to identify predictors of success and retreatment patterns. Retrospective single-center exploratory analysis included 53 consecutive catheterized men undergoing PAE between January 2019 and March 2025. TWOC succeeded in 29 (54.7%) of 53 patients, lower than prior series, likely reflecting the chronic catheter-dependent cohort and lower bilateral embolization rate. Among successful cases, 2 (6.9%) of 29 experienced recurrent rete

Neuromodulatory effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on post-stroke urinary retention: insights from neuroelectrophysiological assessment.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke urinary retention is common and clinically relevant. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) may modulate supraspinal micturition circuits, but evidence in retention is limited. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 103 patients with post-stroke urinary retention: 52 received 4 weeks of contralesional M1 low-frequency rTMS plus rehabilitation, and 51 rehabilitation alone. Outcomes included post-void residual volume (PVR) and neurophysiological measures, while the urinary function score was analyzed as an exploratory symptom measure. RESULTS: Most baseline ch…

Sugammadex reduces urinary retention after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair: a retrospective analysis and brief literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is common after inguinal hernia repairs (IHR). General anesthesia often utilizes paralytic agents such as vecuronium and rocuronium, which are subsequently reversed with neostigmine upon surgery completion. Neostigmine has undesired cholinergic effects, however, and is typically co-administered with glycopyrrolate, an anticholinergic agent which can impair bladder contraction, leading to urinary retention. Early studies have investigated sugammadex, an alternative reversal agent without cholinergic properties, to reduce POUR after IHR, yet n…

Does spinal anesthesia lead to postoperative urinary retention in same-day urogynecology surgery? A retrospective review.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Spinal anesthesia has been reported to be a risk factor for postoperative urinary retention (POUR) in various surgical specialties. We hypothesized that spinal anesthesia was a risk factor for POUR after outpatient vaginal surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). METHODS: This was a retrospective review of an urogynecology database for all outpatient POP vaginal surgeries performed in 2014 to evaluate the risk of POUR after general versus spinal anesthesia. A standardized voiding trial was performed by backfilling the bladder with 300 ml of saline. A successful tr…

Risk factors and associated complications for postoperative urinary retention after lumbar surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a very common postoperative complication of all surgeries (5%-70%) that may lead to complications such as urinary tract infection (UTI), bladder overdistension, autonomic dysregulation, and increased postoperative length of stay (LOS). Within the field of spine surgery, the reported incidence rate of POUR is highly variable (5.6%-38%). Lack of clear stratification of surgical level, spinal pathology, and inadequate sample size are major limitations of available studies concerning POUR following spine surgery, which may lead to incon…

Acute Urinary Retention due to Primary Pelvic Hydatid Cyst: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Causes of urinary retention in old men include benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, prostate cancer, Scarring of the urethra or bladder neck as a result of injury or surgery, use of certain medicines particularly NSAIDs and opioid analgesics, constipation and neurogenic bladder. When the above common causes are not quite obvious by clinical examination and relevant investigations, then it is necessary to think of other rare diseases. It is with the above in our mind that a case of bladder outflow obstruction due to a large primary retrovesical hydatid cyst is herein reported in a 58-year…

A Randomized Controlled Study on the Impact of Early Urinary Catheter Removal on Postoperative Urinary Retention in Abdominal and Thoracic Surgery Patients with Thoracic Epidural Analgesia.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) is a key component of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols for major abdominal and thoracic procedures. Despite its benefits for pain management, TEA has been associated with an increased risk of postoperative urinary retention (POUR). Consequently, it is common practice to maintain a urinary catheter (UC) for the duration of TEA. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of early UC removal in patients receiving TEA through a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial approved by the Rostock University Medical Ce…

Symptoms versus ultrasound for monitoring urinary retention after total knee arthroplasty: The UREA randomized clinical trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a frequent complication after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), contributing to prolonged hospital stays, higher healthcare costs, and an increased risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other postoperative complications. Despite the widespread use of bladder ultrasound to guide catheterization decisions, evidence supporting its superiority over symptom-based monitoring is limited. The UREA trial evaluates whether patients undergoing TKA can be safely monitored for POUR based solely on urinary symptoms, potentially reducing unnecessary ca…
