PURPOSE: To determine frequencies of different types of chronic uveitis and the possible associated conditions.
METHODS: In the retrospective study a review is made of all 336 consecutive patients with chronic uveitis seen during 1983 through 1993. All patients were evaluated ophthalmologically and most of them medically. Traumatic uveitis was excluded from this study.

We report a case of severe chronic bilateral uveitis in a 60-year-old white man without neurological manifestations. Spondylarthritis and isolated malabsorption suggested the diagnosis of Whipple's disease. A normal duodenal biopsy delated the diagnosis, who was secondarily demonstrated an adenopathy biopsy and macrophage study on vitrectomy sample (macrophage distended by periodic acid-Schiff positive material). Although experimental models of autoimmune uveitis predict pinealitis coincident with uveitis, there is no direct evidence of pineal pathology accompanying a human uveitis. Ocular syphilis is rare in human immunodeficiency virus infected individuals. We think that syphilis should be considered in evaluating such patients presenting with uveitis. Most often, ocular syphilis includes retinitis associated with anterior or posterior uveitis, sometimes with optic neuritis. The level of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the aqueous humor of 24 patients with 2 types of uveitis was measured with a specific bioassay using the murine hybridoma cell line B9. Sixteen patients had Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis (FHC) and 8 had toxoplasma uveitis (TU). Sixty-three percent of each of the FHC and TU groups had raised levels of IL-6 in their aqueous (mean: 543 and 19,228 units/ml respectively). A pathological study was performed on the necropsy eyes of a 59-year old-woman who had suffered for nine years from multifocal posterior uveitis.
