The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted both the importance of vaccination and the persistent challenge of vaccine hesitancy. As future global outbreaks remain a realistic threat, understanding the factors shaping vaccination intentions beyond the COVID-19 context is crucial. We conducted a pre-registered vignette experiment in an online survey in Hungary (N=1000), varying six disease and vaccine-related attributes: disease severity, vaccine's country of origin, technology, regulatory approval, side effects, and recommendation source. Respondents evaluated eight randomly assigned scenarios each. Mul

BACKGROUND: Cameroon’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) introduced the HPV vaccine into the routine immunization schedule in Cameroon in October 2020. However, coverage for this vaccine was just 20% by December 2022, prompting the government to adopt and implement a gender-neutral vaccination (GNV) from January 2023. The goal was to increase acceptance, reduce stigma, and improve vaccine coverage. This study aimed to assess the perceptions of key immunization stakeholders in Cameroon on the GNV approach to HPV vaccination. METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted from June to September

Maternal vaccination has been evaluated and found to be extremely effective at preventing illness in pregnant women and new-borns; however, uptake of such programmes has been low in some areas. To analyse factors contributing to uptake of vaccines globally, a systematic review on vaccine hesitancy was carried out by The Vaccine Confidence Project in 2012. In order to further analyse factors contributing to uptake of maternal immunisation, a further search within the broader systematic review was conducted using the terms 'Pregnan*' or 'Matern*'. Forty-two articles were identified. Pregnancy-re

BACKGROUND: In the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, people of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicities were among the groups most likely to acquire COVID-19, and to develop serious infection, but were also the least likely to have received a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Our aim was to explore SARS-CoV-2 vaccine understandings and decision-making among people of Black ethnicities in order to understand the complex drivers of vaccination disparities.
METHODS: We conducted six online and face-to-face focus group discussions with thirty-six participants of Black ethnicities in London, UK. To

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory pathogen with a significant persisting global burden despite decades of scientific advancement. Vaccines have profoundly affected the natural history of influenza to become our most effective means of prevention. In these times of increasing vaccine hesitancy, there is a need for an ongoing strong endorsement of the annual influenza vaccine to prevent severe illness, reduce hospitalizations/deaths, protect vulnerable populations, and minimize community spread.

Recent data indicates increasing hesitancy towards both COVID-19 and influenza vaccination. We studied attitudes towards COVID-19 booster, influenza, and combination influenza-COVID-19 booster vaccines in a nationally representative sample of US adults between May and June 2021 (n = 12,887). We used pre-qualification quotes to ensure adequate sample sizes for minority populations. Overall vaccine acceptance was 45% for a COVID-19 booster alone, 58% for an influenza vaccine alone, and 50% for a combination vaccine. Logistic regression showed lower acceptance among female, Black/African American

BACKGROUND: Malaysia provided COVID-19 vaccines for all residents, regardless of citizenship status. However, the extent of vaccine accessibility for migrant populations remains unclear, given the complex healthcare barriers they face. This study explored the barriers migrants faced in accessing COVID-19 vaccines and the measures taken to facilitate their access.
METHODS: This qualitative study, conducted between April 2022 and February 2023, involved 32 purposively selected key informants from non-governmental organisations (7), international organisations (2), labour unions (2), healthcare

The 2022-2023 mpox outbreak has disproportionately impacted gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). The US CDC recommended individuals to explore safer sexual practices that minimize the potential risk of exposure and also strongly encouraged for eligible individuals to prioritize vaccination. This study aimed to analyze social media data related to mpox on Reddit since the mpox outbreak and identify themes associated with the impact on social behaviors and social processes among targeted population. Publicly available data were collected from the social media Reddit. We ex

The rapid manufacturing of vaccines has increased hesitancy toward receiving the COVID-19 vaccines. Clarifying what to expect after vaccination and revealing the possible side effects will lower hesitancy toward receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and increase public awareness. This descriptive cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted in Jordan (August 2021) to collect data on the short-term side effects following the COVID-19 vaccines. An extensive literature review was conducted by the research team to assist in developing the first draft of the survey. The survey was tested for face and

Hepatitis B virus is a well-known infectious etiology of acute and chronic liver disease worldwide. Notably, 90% of children infected with hepatitis B in infancy develop chronic infection and subsequent progressive liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Significant reduction in perinatal transmission in the United States (US) was seen after implementation of universal infant vaccination 30 years ago, as well as dramatic reductions in HBV incidence across Asia, coinciding with widespread hepatitis B vaccination. However, with ongoing changes to federal vaccine guidance

BACKGROUND: There is limited data on adult opinions toward school-based vaccination programs, which can supplement clinic-based strategies in the Brazilian public health system. Since 2016, vaccination rates among Brazilian children and adolescents have shown worrisome declines, remaining well below full coverage, including for more recently introduced COVID-19 vaccines. School vaccination programs are not commonly implemented or monitored in Brazil.
METHODS: A face-to-face household survey of Brazilians aged 18+ was conducted from July 29 to August 3, 2023. This cross-sectional study used mu

Pregnancy is an independent risk factor for severe covid-19. Vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection and limit its morbidity and mortality. The current recommendations from the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and professional organizations are for pregnant, postpartum, and lactating women to receive covid-19 vaccination. Pregnancy specific considerations involve potential effects of vaccination on fetal development, placental transfer of antibodies, and safety of maternal vaccination. Although pregnancy was an exclusion cri

Few guidelines exist for COVID-19 vaccination amongst cancer patients, fostering uncertainty regarding the immunogenicity, safety, and effects of cancer therapies on vaccination, which this review aims to address. A literature review was conducted to include the latest articles covering the immunogenicity and safety of COVID-19 vaccination in patients with solid and hematologic cancers receiving various treatments. Lower seropositivity following vaccination was associated with malignancy (compared to the general population), and hematologic malignancy (compared to solid cancers). Patients rece

This paper describes engagement in European Immunization Week (EIW) in Tyrol, Austria in April 2016 and an assessment of its possible impact on demand for measles, mumps, rubella vaccination (MMR). It further describes the output of a knowledge, attitudes and practice (KAP) survey conducted during EIW, showing that 93% (188/202) of respondents were in favor of vaccination in general and 90% (192/214) perceived MMR vaccination to be important. MMR vaccination was perceived as important by more participants than other vaccinations. The number of MMR doses administered by public health services i

INTRODUCTION: While planning an immunization campaign in settings where public health interventions are subject to politically motivated resistance, designing context-based social mobilization strategies is critical to ensure community acceptability. In preparation for an Oral Cholera Vaccine campaign implemented in Nampula, Mozambique, in November 2016, we assessed potential barriers and levers for vaccine acceptability.
METHODS: Questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, as well as observations, were conducted before the campaign. The participants included central and

Vaccine hesitancy has been on the rise throughout the past two decades, especially in high income countries where existing pro-vaccination public health communication strategies have proven ineffective. We argue that appealing to other-regarding preferences is one way of improving the effectiveness of public health communication strategies. To test this argument, we assess how vaccination intentions are influenced by the presence of people who cannot vaccinate, such as the immunosuppressed, newborns or pregnant women, using a laboratory experiment where there is a passive player whose welfare

Measles is a worldwide viral disease that can cause fatal complications in immunocompromised hosts such as hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients. The live attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is generally contraindicated post-HCT due to the risk for vaccine-associated measles. This, combined with decreasing vaccination rates due to vaccine hesitancy and the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, raises significant concerns for a measles resurgence that could portend devastating consequences for immunocompromised hosts. Multiple guidelines have included criteria to determin

The availability of a varicella vaccine has led to significant decreases in incidence of this once-common childhood disease. In the setting of rising vaccine hesitancy, health care clinicians are now more frequently facing questions about infections caused by varicella zoster virus. In this continuing state-of-the-art review series, we equip clinicians with the tools to navigate crucial conversations about the importance of varicella vaccination and to recognize, treat, and mitigate spread of this virus.
