We have previously demonstrated that insulin hypoglycemia releases antral gastrin by a pH sensitive mechanism in duodenal ulcer (DU) patients. This experimental study describes the pressure changes of the descending colon before and after total and selective vagotomy combined with Finney's pyloroplasty as estimated by telemetry. The results obtained from the study of 20 dogs show that the motility of the descending colon is extremely reduced after total vagotomy with no change after selective vagotomy.

Acid secretory and serum gastrin responses to 2-deoxy-D-glucose and insulin were compared in gastric fistula dogs before and after partial vagotomy and pyloroplasty or partial vagotomy and antrectomy. From 1970 to 1974 proximal gastric vagotomy without drainage was performed in 158 patients for duodenal ulcer. One patient died, giving an operative mortality of 0.6 per cent.
