Lead-related infective endocarditis: factors influencing the formation of large vegetations.

AIMS: The presence of intracardiac lead vegetations (ILV) is one of the important criteria for diagnosis of lead-related infective endocarditis (LRIE). The objective of the present study was to evaluate risk factors of ILV and their impact on vegetation size. METHODS AND RESULTS: Clinical data of 500 patients with LRIE undergoing transvenous lead extraction in 2006-15 were retrospectively analysed. The study population consisted of 352 patients with the presence of vegetations (giant, >3 cm; large, 2.0-2.9 cm; moderate-sized, 1.0-1.9 cm; and small, <1 cm) and 148 patients without ILV. We iden

Awakening with amantadine from a persistent vegetative state after subarachnoid haemorrhage.

We report the case of a 36-year-old woman with a subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) caused by a rupture of a right-sided middle cerebral artery aneurysm and subsequent malignant infarction of the right hemisphere leading to a persistent vegetative state and severe spastic tetraparesis with recurrent myocloni. Nine months after disease onset, the patient was transferred to our department for diagnostic and therapeutic re-evaluation. The poor clinical condition could not be explained by the brain lesion caused by the SAH or infarction. Moreover, glucose metabolism was normal in brain regions not aff

Sexual and vegetative propagation of the medicinal Mexican species Phyllonoma laticuspis (Phyllonomaceae).

Phyllonoma laticuspis leaves are used in Carrizal de Bravo, Guerrero, Mexico, to heal skin lesions such as injuries and smallpox sequelae and to treat diabetes mellitus type 2, and organic extracts of these leaves have been reported to exert antibacterial effects. High demand of P. laticuspis as a medicinal plant has decreased its natural populations, and propagation of the species has not yet been reported. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the vegetative propagation of the species through cutting and air layering, as well as its sexual propagation in a preserved population.

Evaluation of the deleterious health effects of consumption of repeatedly heated vegetable oil.

Consumption of repeatedly heated cooking oil (RHCO) has been a regular practice without knowing the harmful effects of use. The present study is based on the hypothesis that, heating of edible oils to their boiling points results in the formation of free radicals that cause oxidative stress and induce damage at the cellular and molecular levels. Peroxide value of heated oil, histopathological alterations, antioxidant enzyme levels and blood biochemistry were determined in Wistar rats treated with the RHCO. RHCO revealed higher peroxide value in comparison to oil that has been unheated or singl

Evaluation of Palm Oil as a Suitable Vegetable Oil for Vitamin A Fortification Programs.

Fortification programs are considered to be an effective strategy to mitigate vitamin A deficiency in populations at risk. Fortified vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids were shown to be prone to oxidation, leading to limited vitamin A stability. Thus, it was hypothesized that fortified oils consisting of mainly saturated fatty acids might enhance the stability of vitamin A. Mildly (peroxide value: 1.0 meq O₂/kg) and highly (peroxide value: 7.5 meq O₂/kg) oxidized palm oil was stored, after fortification with 60 International Units/g retinyl palmitate, in 0.5 L transparent polyet

Patterns of seed bank and vegetation diversity along a tidal freshwater river.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Species richness and diversity may increase with spatial scale related to increased area and heterogeneity of habitat. Yet, in bidirectional hydrologically connected tidal ecosystems, secondary dispersal via hydrochory has the potential to homogenize seed banks, and both life history characteristics and tolerances to environmental conditions influence the composition of plant communities. How species richness, diversity, and composition of seed banks and vegetation change along environmental gradients and at different spatial scales is not well understood. METHODS: We ex

The TOR signaling pathway regulates vegetative development and virulence in Fusarium graminearum.

The target of rapamycin (TOR) signaling pathway plays critical roles in controlling cell growth in a variety of eukaryotes. However, the contribution of this pathway in regulating virulence of plant pathogenic fungi is unknown. We identified and characterized nine genes encoding components of the TOR pathway in Fusarium graminearum. Biological, genetic and biochemical functions of each component were investigated. The FgFkbp12-rapamycin complex binds to the FgTor kinase. The type 2A phosphatases FgPp2A, FgSit4 and FgPpg1 were found to interact with FgTap42, a downstream component of FgTor. Amo

A simplified procedure for the determination of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorobiphenyls in edible vegetable oils.

A one-step extraction-purification multiresidue method for the determination of 14 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 7 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in edible vegetable oils based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) has been developed. The experimental parameters affecting the recoveries and the efficiency of the cleanup procedure were thoroughly evaluated. Under an optimised condition, 0.5 g of oil sample was blended with 3.5 g of sulfuric acid-impregnated silica and 0.8 g of silica gel was used as co-column absorbent. The PCBs and OCPs were eluted by 10 mL of n-hexane/dichlorometha

FgVELB is associated with vegetative differentiation, secondary metabolism and virulence in Fusarium graminearum.

The velvet complex containing VeA, VelB and LaeA has been showed to play critical roles in the regulation of secondary metabolism and diverse cellular processes in Aspergillus spp. In this study, we identified FgVelB, a homolog of Aspergillus nidulans VelB, from Fusarium graminearum using the BLASTP program. Disruption of FgVELB gene led to several phenotypic defects, including suppression of aerial hyphae formation, reduced hyphal hydrophobicity and highly increased conidiation. The mutant showed increased resistance to osmotic stress and cell wall-damaging agents, which may be related to a h

Elective single-vessel percutaneous coronary intervention in a vegetative state patient.

A 73-year-old male in a persistent vegetative state underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for unstable angina with multiple-vessel stenosis. The maximum dose pharmaceutical therapy was ineffective in controlling his symptoms. The goal of the procedure was to alleviate the patient's severe chest pain and vomiting with minimal invasion and risk. The procedure was effective despite treating only the culprit artery. Symptoms disappeared immediately after PCI and the patient remained attack free for 12 months. With the consent of the patient's family and support of medical staff, elect

Protective perfumes: the role of vegetative volatiles in plant defense against herbivores.

Herbivore damage to leaves and other vegetative tissues often stimulates the emission of volatile compounds, suggesting that these substances have a role in plant defense. In fact, ample evidence has accumulated in the last few years indicating that volatiles from vegetative plant parts can directly repel herbivores, such as ovipositing butterflies and host-seeking aphids. Volatiles have also been demonstrated to protect plants by attracting herbivore enemies, such as parasitic wasps, predatory arthropods and possibly even insectivorous birds. Even below ground herbivory results in the release

Real-time three-dimensional echocardiography in evaluating Libman-Sacks vegetations.

Libman-Sacks endocarditis, characterized by sterile fibrofibrinous vegetations that have the potential to develop anywhere on the endocardial surface, was originally reported in 1924. The mitral valve is most commonly affected, followed by the aortic valve, whereas tricuspid and pulmonary valves are seldom involved. Libman-Sacks vegetations can be found in approximately 1 of 10 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus by transoesophageal echocardiography (TTE), and they are variably associated with lupus duration, disease activity, anticardiolipin antibodies, and antiphospholipid syndrome ma

Environmental factors affecting efficacy of bifenthrin-treated vegetation for mosquito control.

The use of pesticide-treated vegetation as a barrier for control of nuisance and disease-bearing mosquitoes has become an option for mosquito management for home owners and public health and mosquito control professionals. Potted wax myrtle and azalea plants were treated with bifenthrin (0.79% AI) at maximum label rate using backpack and electrostatic sprayers and exposed to various treatments that could affect the residual degradation of the applied pesticides. Treatments included leaf aspect, simulated rainfall, shade, and natural sun exposure with the residual effectiveness of leaves examin
