[Objective evaluation of otolithic end organs in sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the function of the otolithic end organs and their input pathways in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) patients. METHODS: Forty cases of unilateral SSHL were enrolled as the observing group from May, 2011 to May, 2012. Thirty age- and gender-matched normal subjects were recruited as the control group. Both patients and normal subjects underwent conventional air-conducted ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) in bilateral ears. The results were compared between the affected ears, the contralate

Processing of vestibular inputs by the medullary lateral tegmental field of conscious cats: implications for generation of motion sickness.

The dorsolateral reticular formation of the caudal medulla, the lateral tegmental field (LTF), participates in generating vomiting. LTF neurons exhibited complex responses to vestibular stimulation in decerebrate cats, indicating that they received converging inputs from a variety of labyrinthine receptors. Such a convergence pattern of vestibular inputs is appropriate for a brain region that participates in generating motion sickness. Since responses of brainstem neurons to vestibular stimulation can differ between decerebrate and conscious animals, the current study examined the effects of w

Neural variability, detection thresholds, and information transmission in the vestibular system.

A fundamental issue in neural coding is the role of spike timing variation in information transmission of sensory stimuli. Vestibular afferents are particularly well suited to study this issue because they are classified as either regular or irregular based on resting discharge variability as well as morphology. Here, we compared the responses of each afferent class to sinusoidal and random head rotations using both information theoretic and gain measures. Information theoretic measures demonstrated that regular afferents transmitted, on average, two times more information than irregular affer

Neuroplasticity changes during space flight.

Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of neurons to alter some functional property in response to alterations in input. Most of the inputs received by the brain and thus the neurons are coming from the overall sensory system. The lack of gravity during space flight or even the reduction of gravity during the planned Mars missions are and will change these inputs. The often observed "loop swimming" of some aquatic species is under discussion to be based on sensory input changes as well as the observed motion sickness of astronauts and cosmonauts. Several reports are published regarding these ch

[Motion sickness exemplified by seasickness].

The knowledge of seasickness is as old as seafaring itself. In ancient times the Babylonians already reported on this malaise and on possible therapeutical measurements. The Babylonians, the advice of old sailors and modern pharmaceuticals have one thing in common. They have not been able to find a complete cure for motion disease. The interactions of the relevant cerebral structures are so complex that no drug is available which can interrupt this process definitively. The most important preventive measure is to develop strategies which lead to a quicker adaptation to movement.

Vestibular and cochlear toxicity of aminoglycosides--a review.

Recently, there have been many reports describing the efficacy of intratympanic aminoglycoside injection for the treatment of intractable vertigo in patients with Ménière's disease. However, the number of injections and the amount of drug injected varies, with concomitant variation in the side-effect of hearing deterioration. To identify drugs that are more selectively vestibulotoxic, we have reviewed the ototoxicity of aminoglycosides, focusing on differences between vestibulo- and cochleotoxicity. At present, the basis for the different effects of each drug is unknown. The mechanisms of vest

Use of evoked potentials to objectively differentiate between selective vulnerability of cochlear and vestibular end organ function.

Auditory nerve brainstem evoked responses (ABR) have been used for several decades to investigate cochlear function. Recently techniques have been developed to elicit similar recordings from the vestibular end organs - short latency vestibular evoked potentials (VsEPs). Both ABR and VsEP reflect appropriate end organ function and may therefore be used to investigate the vulnerability of these end organs to various experimental insults, such as noise exposure and ototoxic drugs.

The effect of hair bundle shape on hair bundle hydrodynamics of inner ear hair cells at low and high frequencies.

The relationship between size and shape of the hair bundle of a hair cell in the inner ear and its sensitivity at asymptotically high and low frequencies was determined, thereby extending the results of an analysis of hair bundle hydrodynamics in two dimensions (Freeman and Weiss, 1990. Hydrodynamic analysis of a two-dimensional model for micromechanical resonance of free-standing hair bundles. Hear. Res. 48, 37-68) to three dimensions. A hemispheroid was used to represent the hair bundle. The hemispheroid had a number of advantages: it could represent shapes that range from thin, pencil-like

Recurrent inhibition in humans.

Methods have been developed to investigate recurrent inhibition (RI) in humans. A conditioning reflex discharge is used to evoke in motoneurones (MNs) supplying homonymous and synergistic muscles, an inhibition the characteristics of which are consistent with RI: it appears and increases with the conditioning motor discharge, has a short latency and a long duration, and is enhanced by an agonist of acetylcholine. As in the cat, homonymous RI exists in all explored motor nuclei of the limbs except those of the digits and the pattern of distribution of heteronymous RI closely matches that of mon

[Study of mechanisms underlying the effects of low-frequency acoustic vibrations].

The article covers experimental data about influence of infrasound on hearing and vestibular apparatus, about body changes linked functionally to this apparatus. The authors revealed 4 zones of response of hearing and vestibular apparatus to infrasound. Infrasound appeared to affect directly nuclei of VIII and X cranial nerves and indirectly other organs and systems linked functionally to vagus nerve.

Clinical evidence that the vestibular system participates in autonomic control.

The vestibular system, including both the peripheral vestibular system, that is, the labyrinth, and the central vestibular system, is known to influence autonomic function in several ways that have clinical implications. This paper discusses evidence for vestibular influences on autonomic control from normal human subjects, evidence for vestibular influences on autonomic control from patients, clinical implications of vestibulo-autonomic regulation, and speculations regarding possible clinical implications of vestibulo-autonomic control. Situations that provoke vestibular-induced autonomic res

Visual object localization through vestibular and neck inputs. 1: Localization with respect to space and relative to the head and trunk mid-sagittal planes.

Object localization in space signals in the absence of an external reference (visual, auditory, haptic) involves a signal of the head in space (vestibular). The present study asks whether signals of body position relative to the support surface (proprioceptive) are involved as well, by investigating the role of vestibular-neck interaction (dissociating head and trunk position). Normal human subjects saw a light spot (object) and continuously nulled displacement steps of the spot. They did so before and after vestibular and/or neck rotational stimulation in the horizontal plane, reproducing a p

Evaluation of the vestibular system by magnetic resonance angiography.

This report describes the normal arterial patterns of the vestibulocerebellar regions visualized by magnetic resonance angiography. Variations in the vertebrobasilar arterial system are described, limitations in imaging are discussed, and collateral connections within the cerebellar vessels and the circle of Willis are reviewed. Clinical correlations are defined between the vestibular nuclei, the associated intraaxial tracts, and with specific posterior cerebral and brain stem arteries.

Effects of systemic and lateral semicircular canal administration of aminoglycosides on normal and hydropic inner ears.

Streptomycin was injected subcutaneously into guinea pigs (n = 12) with unilateral endolymphatic hydrops. In the unoperated ears, sensory cells were degenerated at the basal ends of all cochleas and to varying extents in the vestibular sense organs. Hydropic ears, in contrast, showed greater ototoxicity in the cochlear and saccular sensory cells, while the drug's effect on the utricular and cristae sensory cells was increased, but less remarkable. In another series of normal animals (n = 16), streptomycin was applied to a fenestra of the lateral semicircular canal. Sensory cells of all three c
