BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health threat worldwide, but most of the presumed infected individuals remain asymptomatic and contain Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in a latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), and some of them will progress to active tuberculosis. Vitamin B-12 is crucial to maintain immune function, and play a role in the metabolism of MTB, while few studies investigated the impact of vitamin B-12 deficiency on tuberculosis. Therefore, we carried out the study to explore the association between vitamin B-12 deficiency and LTBI using the Nat

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of Vitamin B (12) deficiency in infancy include growth retardation, regression of psychomotor development, muscular hypotonia and brain atrophy. Besides an inappropriate vegetarian diet of the infants, a vegan diet or a pernicious anaemia of the mother may lead to an insufficient vitamin B (12) supply of the child.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report here the neurological symptoms of 4 fully breast-fed infants from mothers on vegan diet or with pernicious anaemia.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Vitamin B (12) deficiency can easily be diagnosed by detection of methylmalonic acid

Malnutrition is common among HIV-infected individuals and is often accompanied by low serum levels of micronutrients. Vitamin B-12 deficiency has been associated with various factors including faster HIV disease progression and CD4 depletion in resource-rich settings. To describe prevalence and factors associated with sub-optimal vitamin B-12 levels among HIV-infected antiretroviral therapy (ART) naïve adults in a resource-poor setting, we performed a cross-sectional study with a retrospective chart review among individuals attending either the Mulago-Mbarara teaching hospitals' Joint AIDS Pro

This two-part review highlights micronutrients for which either public health policy has been established or for which new evidence provides guidance as to recommended intakes during pregnancy. One pivotal micronutrient is folate, the generic name for different forms of a water-soluble vitamin essential for the synthesis of thymidylate and purines and, hence, DNA. For non-pregnant adult women the recommended intake is 400 μg/day dietary folate equivalent. For women capable of becoming pregnant an additional 400 μg/day of synthetic folic acid from supplements or fortified foods is recommended t

Low vitamin B-12 levels can occur without deficiency being present, and normal levels don't always rule out vitamin B-12 deficiency. A clinical assessment, together with blood count and blood film results, can ensure a correct interpretation of vitamin B-12 and folate levels

Deficiency of vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, mostly in vegetarians, is found to be associated with depression and adverse neurological function. We investigated whether vitamin B6, B12, and folate have an effect on brain structure, especially among depressed people who follow a specific diet. The study sample comprised 9426 participants from the UK Biobank cohort with a mean age of 62.4 years. A generalized linear model controlling for age, sex, body mass index, ethnicity, town send deprivation index, educational qualification, smoking, and alcohol intake was used to test the association between

Three patients are described, and they provide further evidence that deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B(12) may sometimes affect small intestinal function. Malabsorption of both xylose and vitamin B(12) returned to normal in one patient after treatment of a megaloblastic anaemia due to dietary deficiency of folic acid. Impaired absorption of vitamin B(12) was corrected by vitamin B(12) therapy in the other two patients. The initial cause of the vitamin B(12) deficiency in one patient was not apparent, but she was taking Gynovlar 21, which may have been an aetiological factor. In the third

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency of anemia, iron, vitamin B12, folate, retinol and predictors of anemia among Mexican children from Ensanut 2012.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hemoglobin, ferritin, CRP, vitamin B12, retinol and folate concentrations were measured in 2 678 children aged 1-4 y and 4 275 children aged 5-11 y. Adjusted logistic regression models were constructed to assess the risk for anemia and micronutrient deficiencies.
RESULTS: In preschoolers and scholars, the overall prevalence of anemia was 20.4 and 9.7%, iron deficiency 14 and 9.3%, low vitamin B12 (LB12S) 1.9 and 2.6%; Fol

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chronic vitamin A deficiency is the leading preventable cause of childhood blindness.1 Patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represent a high-risk group because they may present eating disorders that lead to severe nutritional deficiencies. We present the case of a pediatric patient diagnosed with ASD who developed xerophthalmia and bilateral optic neuropathy in the context of vitamin A deficiency, associated with vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia, who was managed and followed up through a multidisciplinary approach. The aim of this work

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to investigate the vitamin D (vit-D) and vitamin B12 (vit-B12) levels and their correlation with anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies in patients with autoimmune hypothyroidism.
METHODS: A total of 130 patients diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism were included in the study retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups as those having vit-B12 levels below 200 pg/mL (n = 60) and vit-B12 levels equal to or above 200 pg/mL (n = 70). These two groups were compared in terms of age, sex, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free-T4 (FT4),

OBJECTIVE: Potential vitamin B(12) deficiency is a common clinical diagnostic problem, and many providers have a low threshold for initiating therapy. The goal of this study was to systematically evaluate current practice patterns regarding the laboratory evaluation of suspected vitamin B(12) deficiency.
METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed the electronic medical records of 192 patients initiated on intramuscular vitamin B(12) injections.
RESULTS: Only 12 patients had objectively documented hematologic responses: decrease of mean corpuscular volume by ≥5 fL with stable or improved hemo
