Prophylactic vitamin K for vitamin K deficiency bleeding in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin K deficiency can cause bleeding in an infant in the first weeks of life. This is known as Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn (HDN). HDN is divided into three categories: early, classic and late HDN. Early HDN occurs within 24 hours post partum and falls outside the scope of this review. Classic HDN occurs on days one to seven; common bleeding sites are gastrointestinal, cutaneous, nasal and from a circumcision. Late HDN occurs from week 2-12; the most common bleeding sites are intracranial, cutaneous, and gastrointestinal. Vitamin K is commonly given prophylactically after

Breast-milk vitamin A as an indicator of the vitamin A status of women and infants.

This article reviews the evidence for using breast-milk vitamin A as an indicator of vitamin A status and provides technical information for researchers who want to use this indicator to assess the vitamin A status of women and breast-fed children. Breast-milk vitamin A is a unique indicator for assessing the vitamin A status of lactating women and their breast-fed infants, and has recently been recommended by WHO for use in monitoring global elimination of vitamin A deficiency. Assessing breast-milk vitamin A is less invasive than alternative approaches for assessing a mother's vitamin A stat

Vitamin D and pregnancy: the maternal-fetal metabolism of vitamin D.

A model of the maternal-fetal metabolism of vitamin D3 is depicted in Fig. 2. 25-OHD3 of maternal origin is metabolized by the maternal kidneys to the potent metabolite, 1,25-(OH)2D3, which acts on the maternal intestine, kidneys, and skeleton. The maternal kidneys and other organs can produce 24,25-(OH)2D3, although this pathway may be suppressed near the end of gestation. The placenta has selective permeability to the vitamin D3 metabolites, with 25-OHD3 crossing from the mother to the fetus more readily than the dihydroxylated metabolites. The onset of the placental synthesis of 1,25-(OH)2D

Relevance of a borderline vitamin deficiency in relation to the question of vitamin requirement.

A definition is given for the terms of latent and borderline vitamin deficiency, and the vitamin requirement and optimal vitamin supply, respectively, are discussed in relation to these two terms. The upper limit of the latent vitamin deficiency status can be used to define the optimal intake of vitamins, whereas the lower limit indicates the minimum requirement. The impact on health of a latent vitamin deficiency lies in the risk of falling into a manifest vitamin deficiency during sudden stress, whereas, in borderline vitamin deficiency status, some health functions are affected so that a pr…

Vitamin A serum and dietary vitamin A intake in lung cancer patients.

Clinical and experimental evidence indicates a possible role for vitamin A deficiency in the pathogenesis of bronchogenic carcinoma. We, therefore, measured serum vitamin A levels in 67 newly diagnosed non-resectable lung cancer patients. In 43 of these patients daily vitamin A intake was also determined. Serum vitamin A levels were within the normal range of the general population of 66 of the 67 patients. Eighteen of 43 patients had daily vitamin A intakes less than 5000 IU/day while 25 patients had daily intake above this level. The serum vitamin A level did not correlate with histologic su

Vitamin B12 and vitamin B12 binding proteins in liver diseases.

Serum vitamin B12 and vitamin B12 binding proteins (transcobalamins, TCS) were determined in patients with malaria, amoebic liver abscess, carcinoma of the liver, infectious hepatitis, cirrhosis and chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) as well as in 60 blood donor subjects. Serum vitamin B12 in patients with infectious hepatitis, cirrhosis and CML were higher than that of the normal subjects. The values of unsaturated vitamin B12 binding capacity (UBBC) in patients with carcinoma of the liver, infectious hepatitis, cirrhosis were lower while that of patients with CML were higher than that of the

The vitamin rheostat: A unified model of epigenetic feedback in vitamin homeostasis.

Recent evidence implicates epigenetic mechanisms in vitamin metabolism, yet most studies remain focused on individual vitamins. In this mini-review, we extend beyond single-vitamin paradigms to propose the Vitamin Rheostat: a unifying model in which vitamins influence regulatory signaling networks that shape their own uptake, utilization, and degradation. By integrating fat-soluble vitamins (nuclear receptor-mediated signaling) and water-soluble vitamins (methyl-donor and enzymatic cofactor systems), this model provides a predictive and experimentally testable framework that may help explain i…

A role for vitamin D and the vitamin D receptor in keloid disorder.

Keloids are disfiguring fibroproliferative lesions that can occur in susceptible individuals following any skin injury. They are extremely challenging to treat, with relatively low response rates to current therapies and high rates of recurrence after treatment. Although several distinct genetic loci have been associated with keloid formation in different populations, there has been no single causative gene yet identified and the molecular mechanisms guiding keloid development are incompletely understood. Further, although it is well known that keloids are more commonly observed in populations

The relationship between Vitamin A and Vitamin E levels and neonatal morbidities.

OBJECTIVE: In the neonatal period, diseases such as respiratory distress syndrome, necrotizing enterocolitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity, intraventricular hemorrhage, patent ductus arteriosus hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and hyperbilirubinemia are frequently seen, despite being differently affected by the gestational age. This study aims to examine the relationship between morbidities in the neonatal period and serum vitamin A and vitamin E levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, patients who were treated and followed up in the Neonatal

Vitamin A Supplementation Programs and Country-Level Evidence of Vitamin A Deficiency.

Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) programs targeted at children aged 6-59 months are implemented in many countries. By improving immune function, vitamin A (VA) reduces mortality associated with measles, diarrhea, and other illnesses. There is currently a debate regarding the relevance of VAS, but amidst the debate, researchers acknowledge that the majority of nationally-representative data on VA status is outdated. To address this data gap and contribute to the debate, we examined data from 82 countries implementing VAS programs, identified other VA programs, and assessed the recentness of nati

[Metabolism and effects of vitamin D. Definition of vitamin D deficiency].

There is a growing interest for vitamin D in the medical and scientific community as well as in the public media as illustrated by a huge number of publications. Most experts claim that vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is widespread with potential important public health consequences. It may seem surprising for many persons that a deficiency in a vitamin may be so frequent in countries where food is so diversified and easily available. In fact, vitamin D is not a vitamin stricto sensu as it is mainly synthesized in the skin under the action of UVB rays, while its food sources are scarce. Fur

Vitamin A stability in salt triple fortified with iodine, iron, and vitamin A.

BACKGROUND: Dietary micronutrient deficiencies, which lead to diseases such as iodine deficiency disorders, iron-deficiency anemia, and vitamin A deficiency, are serious public health problems in the developing world. Fortifying salt with iodine, iron, and vitamin A is an attractive approach to simultaneously reduce the deficiencies of these three micronutrients in the diet. OBJECTIVE: To explore the technical feasibility of producing triple-fortified salt fortified with iodine, iron, and vitamin A that would be stable under the climatic conditions of developing countries (i.e., high temperat

Vitamin D analogs as modulators of vitamin D receptor action.

The natural calcium-regulating hormone 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25D(3)) is a secosteroid that offers organic chemists many sites for modifying structural and/or functional groups. Such modifications alter the chemistry, stereochemistry, and biological properties of the natural hormone. The resulting deltanoids (vitamin D analogs) have been used in the past two decades as molecular probes to investigate structure-function relationships based on their interactions with proteins that regulate deltanoid biostability (catabolic enzymes of the vitamin D endocrine system and vitamin D bindi

[Serum vitamin A levels of radar operators and effects of supplementary vitamin A].

This paper reports serum vitamin A (VA) content of 28 radar operators, and the effects of supplementation VA were studied by means of observing change of serum VA level and objective dark adaptation time. The results indicated, with respect to serum VA content, 14.3% of radar operators had a deficient level (less than 10 micrograms%), whereas 57.2% of radar operators had a low level (less than 20 micrograms%). There were 39.3% of radar operators who had a low level on nineteenth day and 92.9% of radar operators who had a acceptable value on twenty-eighth day after oral VA supplementation VA of

Vitamin D metabolism in hypophosphatemic vitamin D-resistant rickets.

Plasma levels of 1,25-(OH)2-D were low in children with hypophosphatemic vitamin D-resistant rickets (HVDRR), but increased after very large doses of 1 alpha-OH-D3. These results suggest that the metabolism of 1,25-(OH)2-D is accelerated in HVDRR. In addition, the lower level of plasma 1,25-(OH)2-D in untreated HVDRR was correlated with the lower level of serum phosphate and renal threshold phosphate concentration (TmP/GFR). The administration of 1 alpha-OH-D3 to the patients with HVDRR could enhance the renal threshold phosphate concentration.
