Validation of the measures of cepstral peak prominence as a measure of dysphonia severity in Spanish-speaking subjects.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Perceptual rating of overall voice quality and other more specific perceptual dimensions is difficult, as such judgments depend on the listener's subjectivity. Thus, finding objective, valid, and accessible clinical measures to include in comprehensive voice evaluation protocols is a priority. The purposes of this study were to 1) determine the diagnostic accuracy of a single acoustic measure, smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS), to predict voice disorder status from sustained vowels and connected speech samples using the software Praat; 2) to determine the re…

Normalisation of voice parameters in patients with unilateral vocal fold palsy: is it realistic?

BACKGROUND: Disorders of voice can limit an individual's participation and impair social interaction, thus affecting overall quality of life. Perceptual and objective evaluations can provide the clinician with detailed information regarding voice disorders. METHODS: This study comprised 40 subjects aged 34-46 years, 20 of whom (10 male, 10 female) had unilateral vocal fold palsy. Data were obtained for all participants from: the Voice Handicap Index, the grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia and strain ('GRBAS') scale, acoustic voice analysis, electroglottography, and voice range profiles.

Hoarseness in children.

Hoarseness or dysphonia are terms used to describe a change in the quality of the voice. The voice quality can be raspy, breathy, strained, fatigued, rough, tremulous or weak. There may be a change in pitch, restriction of range, voice breaks, decreased projection, or abnormal resonance. It is important to remember that a voice disorder is not a disease in itself but rather a presentation of an underlying pathology. Clinicians' knowledge of paediatric hoarseness is limited as it can be difficult to examine children using fibreoptic laryngoscopy and the child may not comprehend the need for det…
