Deviance among expeditioners: defining the off-nominal act through space and polar field analogs.

The space venture resembles other extreme environmental exploration in many respects. Since the beginning of the space program, social and behavioral scientists have predicted that space crews increasingly will begin to experience the kinds of deviant behaviors seen in other extreme environmental duty settings as mission duration, crew size, and heterogeneity increases. However, there has been a long history of neglect by the nation's space agency of those psychosocial human factors which will play such a vital role in future manned spaceflight. The author argues that this is counterproductive

Quantification of arterial, venous, and cerebrospinal fluid flow dynamics by magnetic resonance imaging under simulated micro-gravity conditions: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Astronauts undergoing long-duration spaceflight are exposed to numerous health risks, including Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS), a spectrum of ophthalmic changes that can result in permanent loss of visual acuity. The etiology of SANS is not well understood but is thought to involve changes in cerebrovascular flow dynamics in response to microgravity. There is a paucity of knowledge in this area; in particular, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics have not been well characterized under microgravity conditions. Our study was designed to determine the effect of

Microgravity induces pelvic bone loss through osteoclastic activity, osteocytic osteolysis, and osteoblastic cell cycle inhibition by CDKN1a/p21.

Bone is a dynamically remodeled tissue that requires gravity-mediated mechanical stimulation for maintenance of mineral content and structure. Homeostasis in bone occurs through a balance in the activities and signaling of osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and osteocytes, as well as proliferation and differentiation of their stem cell progenitors. Microgravity and unloading are known to cause osteoclast-mediated bone resorption; however, we hypothesize that osteocytic osteolysis, and cell cycle arrest during osteogenesis may also contribute to bone loss in space. To test this possibility, we exposed 1

[Change in sensitivity of the central respiration mechanism in the 21-hour bedrest conditions].

The investigation was aimed at studying the mechanisms for change in the respiration center sensitivity in consequence of 21-hr bed rest with head-end tilted at -15 degrees combined with liquid loss (lasix, 20 ml) and recovery (IV infucol and glucose). Time of maximal breath-holding, capillary and venous O2 and CO2 pressure values were measured in the baseline data collection period, during and shortly after BR. Data analysis showed that extension of the maximal breath-holding time both during inspiration and expiration was statistically significant in the initial 10 minutes of tilting. Compar

Reduced baroreflex control of heart period after bed rest is normalized by acute plasma volume restoration.

Adaptation to spaceflight or head-down-tilt bed rest leads to hypovolemia and an apparent abnormality of baroreflex regulation of cardiac period. In a previous study, we demonstrated that both chronic (2 wk) head-down-tilt bed rest and acute induced hypovolemia led to similar impairments in spontaneous baroreflex control of cardiac period, suggesting that a reduction in plasma volume may be responsible for this abnormality after bed rest. Therefore we hypothesized that this reduced "baroreflex function" could be restored by intravenous volume infusion equivalent to the reduction in plasma volu

Early renal changes in 45 degrees HDT rats.

BACKGROUND: Both microgravity and simulated microgravity models, such as the 45HDT (45 degrees head-down tilt), cause a redistribution of body fluids indicating a possible adaptive process to the microgravity stressor. Understanding the physiological processes that occur in microgravity is a first step to developing countermeasures to stop its harmful effects, i.e., (edema, motion sickness) during long-term space flights. HYPOTHESIS: Because of the kidneys' functional role in the regulation of fluid volume in the body, it plays a key role in the body's adaptation to microgravity. METHODS: Ra

[Physiological evaluation of vestibular training load].

Objective. To evaluate the effects of vestibular training by observing the variations of the physiological indices. It is helpful in grasping the training load, setting down and implementing the training plan. Method. 10 healthy subjects received linear acceleration, continuous Coriolis acceleration and discontinuous Coriolis acceleration stimuli on different dates. The stimulus was stopped when there were slight autonomic nervous symptoms, ECG, EGG and BP were recorded before during and after the stimuli. Computerized Dynamic Posturography (correction of Postrograph) (CDP) was tested before a

The effects of space flight during gestation on rat uterine smooth muscle.

Pregnant rats were flown on a NASA space shuttle during days 11-20 of gestation and the effects of pregnancy maintenance and uterine myometrial smooth muscle were evaluated. There was no effect of space flight on fetal mass in rats examined at recovery on day 20 of gestation (G-20). Rats allowed to go to term delivered vaginally at days 22-23, but space flight significantly decreased pup mass at birth. Space flight did not alter myometrial smooth muscle volume at G-20 and postpartum when compared to flight delayed synchronous controls, but flight animals showed a 37% decrease in myometrial smo

Space adaptation syndrome: multiple etiological factors and individual differences.

Space motion sickness is a significant operational concern in the American and Soviet space programs. Nearly 70% of all astronauts and cosmonauts are affected to some degree during their first several days of flight. It is now beginning to appear that space motion sickness like terrestrial motion sickness is the consequence of multiple etiological factors. As we come to understand basic mechanisms of spatial orientation and sensory-motor adaptation we can begin to predict etiological factors in different motion environments. Individuals vary greatly in the extent to which they are susceptible

RTMS Mitigates Simulated Spaceflight-Induced Emotional Dysfunction Through VEGFR-2-Mediated Neuroprotection.

PURPOSE: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown potential in mitigating emotional deficits induced by extreme environments, such as those encountered during spaceflight. However, its underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates the role of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) in mediating the therapeutic effects of rTMS in a mouse model of simulated space composite environment (SSCE). METHOD: 10 Hz rTMS treatment was initiated after the last two weeks of SSCE exposure and continued for the remaining 2 weeks. Throug

Brain plasticity and sensorimotor deterioration as a function of 70 days head down tilt bed rest.

BACKGROUND: Adverse effects of spaceflight on sensorimotor function have been linked to altered somatosensory and vestibular inputs in the microgravity environment. Whether these spaceflight sequelae have a central nervous system component is unknown. However, experimental studies have shown spaceflight-induced brain structural changes in rodents' sensorimotor brain regions. Understanding the neural correlates of spaceflight-related motor performance changes is important to ultimately develop tailored countermeasures that ensure mission success and astronauts' health. METHOD: Head down-tilt b

Frequent premature ventricular contractions in an orbital spaceflight participant.

BACKGROUND: Commercial spaceflight participants on orbital flights typically are older than career astronauts and they often have medical conditions that have not been studied at high g or in microgravity. This is a case report of a 56-yr-old orbital spaceflight participant with essential tremor and frequent premature ventricular contractions that occurred at rates up to 7000 per day. Before training and spaceflight, he was required to complete extensive clinical investigations to demonstrate normal cardiac structures and the absence of cardiac pathology. The evaluation included signal average

The effect of head turn velocity on cross-coupled stimulation during centrifugation.

Short-radius centrifugation (SRC) provides a practical means of producing artificial gravity for long duration space flights, though perceptual side-effects could limit its operational feasibility. Head turns (HT) during SRC, other than those about the centrifugation axis, produce Cross-Coupled Stimulation (CCS), perceived as a tumbling sensation. CCS can be nauseagenic, though adaptation can minimize this detrimental effect over time. The force environment of CCS suggests that the head turn velocity plays a role in determining the stimulus magnitude, though its degree has not been characteriz

Preflight virtual reality training as a countermeasure for space motion sickness and disorientation.

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests that preflight training in virtual reality devices can simulate certain aspects of microgravity and may prove to be an effective countermeasure for space motion sickness (SMS) and spatial disorientation (SD). It is hypothesized that exposing subjects preflight to variable virtual orientations, similar to those encountered during spaceflight, will reduce the incidence and/or severity of SMS and SD. METHODS: Subjects were assigned to either a variable training (VT) or nonvariable training (NVT) condition to perform a simple navigation and switch activation task i

Blood volume regulating hormones, fluid and electrolyte modifications during 21 and 198-day space flights (Altair-MIR 1993).

During the Altair MIR '93 mission we studied several parameters involved in blood volume regulation. The experiment was done on two cosmonauts before (B-60, B-30), during (D6, D12, D18 for French and D7, D12, D17 for Russian) and after the flight (R+1, R+3 and R+7). Space flight durations were different for two cosmonauts: for the Russian the flight duration was 198 days and for the French 21 days. On board the MIR station only urinary (volume and electrolytes, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and catecholamines) and salivary (cGMP and cortisol) samples w
