Microfluidics in the eye: a review of glaucoma implants from an engineering perspective.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy in the eye, which is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and currently affects over 70 million individuals. Clinically, intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction is the only proven treatment to halt the progression of glaucoma. Microfluidic devices such as glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) devices are routinely used by ophthalmologists to manage elevated IOP, by creating an artificial pathway for the over-accumulated aqueous humor (AH) in a glaucomatous eye, when the natural pathways are severel

Ex vivo localization of wireless implantable microdevice using high-resolution 3D imaging techniques.

The CROSSBRAIN EU project aims to address the heterogeneous nature of brain pathologies by developing wireless implantable microbots (µBots, planned dimensions 100 × 100 × 100 μm3) for highly localized neuromodulation. These devices are designed to precisely modulate brain activity with minimal invasiveness, enabling targeted resolution of specific spatiotemporal events, capabilities not currently achieved by existing neuromodulation technologies. A crucial step involves visualizing and ensuring the optimal placement of the µBots in the brain tissue, to study their functionality after implanta

WULPUS PRO: Multi-mode Ultra-Low-Power Wearable Ultrasound and Array Imaging with CMUT Support.

Wearable ultrasound has emerged as a key technology for continuous monitoring of physiological processes such as muscle dynamics, bladder volume, and cardiovascular activity. Existing fully-wearable ultra-low-power platforms are limited to shallow, low-channel A-mode sensing, while large-channel count (>8) multi-mode systems are too large and power-hungry for true wearability. To bridge this gap, we present WULPUS PRO, a novel runtime-programmable wearable ultrasound acquisition platform with an ultra-compact size of 39 × 21 × 6mm and low weight (5 g) that integrates 30 V excitation, 16 time-m

Measuring autonomic influence on gastrointestinal contractility: development and preliminary validation of novel capsule-based indices.

The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a key feature of fasting gastrointestinal (GI) motility, but its disruption in neuropathic conditions remains poorly characterized. Wireless motility capsules (WMCs) offer a noninvasive means of collecting motility data, facilitating study of larger cohorts. We aimed to develop WMC-derived metrics to identify neuropathic dysmotility and its associations with autonomic nervous system (ANS) function. We analyzed WMC data from 98 controls and 71 people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PWH) in whom autonomic neuropathy (AN) and delayed small bowel

Real-time locomotion mode detection in individuals with transfemoral amputation and osseointegration.

BACKGROUND: Despite notable advancements in prosthetic leg technology, commercially available devices with embedded algorithms utilizing bioelectric signals for prosthetic leg control are lacking. This untapped potential could enhance current prosthetic leg capabilities, enabling more natural movements. However, individuals with short residual limbs have limited available muscle and it has not been investigated if different locomotion modes can be predicted in real-time in this population. Here, we explored the feasibility of using electromyographic signals in individuals with short residual l

Development of bacteriostatic central venous port using photobiomodulation: a comparative in vitro study.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) occurs when a cell is exposed to low energy intensities. A novel central venous port (CVP) with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emits red light with a wavelength of 680 nm via wireless energy transmission technology has been established. This comparative in vitro study examined whether PBM can reduce the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a common cause of central venous (CV) infections, in vitro. In this comparative in vitro study, the red light with a wavelength of 680 nm was used to irradiate an MRSA suspension in phosphate-buffered sali
