Predictive Ability of the Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression-Inpatient Version (DASA-IV) in Medical-Surgical Units.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence persists in health care with nurses reporting physical and verbal abuse from aggressive patients causing emotional stress and lost workdays. The Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression-Inpatient Version (DASA-IV) was developed to measure risk for aggression in patients with behavioral health conditions in psychiatric and emergency department settings. The DASA-IV has not been validated with adult patients admitted to medical-surgical units. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether DASA-IV scores are predictive of aggressive events in adults hospitalized on medical-su…

Presenting clinical characteristics of open globe injuries in ocular trauma: baseline analysis of cases in the ASCOT national clinical trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The Adjunctive Steroid Combination in Ocular Trauma (ASCOT) trial is a unique pragmatic, multi-centre, patient and assessor masked, randomised controlled trial. We evaluate the clinical characteristics and pathology of this large trial cohort of patients with open globe injuries undergoing vitreoretinal surgery, including the associations between patient characteristics and their baseline vision. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We (i) summarise demographics, injury history and ocular history of the 280 participants recruited into the ASCOT trial using descriptive statistics; (ii) ana

Designing Virtual Reality-Based Conversational Agents to Train Clinicians in Verbal De-escalation Skills: Exploratory Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Violence and aggression are significant workplace challenges faced by clinicians worldwide. Traditional methods of training consist of "on-the-job learning" and role-play simulations. Although both approaches can result in improved skill levels, they are not without limitation. Interactive simulations using virtual reality (VR) can complement traditional training processes as a cost-effective, engaging, easily accessible, and flexible training tool. OBJECTIVE: In this exploratory study, we aimed to determine the feasibility of and barriers to verbal engagement with a virtual agent

Individual, interpersonal, and social-structural correlates of involuntary sex exchange among female sex workers in two Mexico-U.S. border cities.

BACKGROUND: To investigate individual, interpersonal, and social-structural factors associated with involuntary sex exchange among female sex workers (FSWs) along the Mexico-U.S. border. METHODS: In 2010 to 2011, 214 FSWs from Tijuana (n = 106) and Ciudad Juarez (n = 108) aged ≥ 18 years who reported lifetime use of heroin, cocaine, crack, or methamphetamine, having a stable partner, and having sold/traded sex in the past month completed quantitative surveys and HIV/sexually transmitted infection testing. Logistic regression was used to identify correlates of involuntary sex exchange among FS

Work-related violence, lifestyle, and health among special education teachers working in Finnish basic education.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported higher levels of absenteeism due to illness among special education teachers compared to other teachers, but it is not known which factors might contribute to this difference. We examined whether health, health behaviors, and exposure to violence at work differed between special education and general education teachers in Finnish basic education. METHODS: Survey data from 5760 general and special education teachers were analyzed with multilevel logistic models adjusted for individual- and school-level confounding factors. RESULTS: No difference was found bet

Perceived impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and government restrictions on the lives of young adults living with HIV in Kisumu, Kenya.

Young adults with HIV (YAHIV) may be particularly vulnerable to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, associated mitigation measures among YAHIV can adversely impact fragile social and economic systems. We examined the impact of the pandemic and related government-mandated restrictions among YAHIV in Kisumu, Kenya. Between April-May 2021, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among a convenience sample of YAHIV 18-25 years receiving HIV care in Kisumu, Kenya. The information collected included demographics, COVID-19 knowledge, protective measures, and the impact of the pandemi

Traumatic brain injury in a rural and an urban Tanzanian hospital--a comparative, retrospective analysis based on computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: In a resource-poor environment such as rural East Africa, expensive medical devices such as computed tomographic (CT) scanners are rare. The CT scanner at the rural Haydom Lutheran Hospital (HLH) in Tanzania therefore offers a unique chance to observe possible differences with urban medical centers in the disease pattern of trauma-related cranial pathologies. The purpose of this study was to compare traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) between a rural and an urban area of Tanzania. METHODS: HLH has 350 beds and one CT scanner. The urban Aga Khan Hospital is a private hospital with 80 b

A Mixed Methods Exploration of Staff Interpretations of the Frequency and Forms of Violence in Long-Term Care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this article, we explore how Long-Term Residential Care (LTRC) features contribute to violence against staff. METHODS: Data were collected using a mixed-methods case study in LTRC, including an online survey (N = 240) and interviews with staff (N = 29) in two Canadian provinces. FINDINGS: Survey data showed 97.2% of staff reported experiencing at least one form of violence from residents, and 53.2% experienced one or more forms of violence from family carers. Severe physical violence from residents was significantly correlated with the number of different types o

Critical incident history questionnaire replication: frequency and severity of trauma exposure among officers from small and midsize police agencies.

Frequency and severity of trauma exposure are thought to influence posttraumatic reactions. Weiss et al.'s Critical Incident History Questionnaire (CIHQ; 2010) measures these variables among law enforcement officers; they reported findings using a sample of officers from large urban departments. We noted the need for replication studies utilizing samples from smaller and rural police agencies. The purpose of this study was to replicate the CIHQ findings from Weiss et al. using a sample (N = 193) of officers from small and midsize police departments and officers whose duties include policing ru

"Nobody Seemed to Notice My Work": The Lived Experiences of Home Care Workers Assisting People With Chronic Diseases: A Phenomenological Study.

INTRODUCTION: Home care workers (HCWs) are paid caregivers who provide support to patients with chronic conditions and functional limitations. Additionally, they provide emotional support to patients and familial support. Although several qualitative studies have been conducted on HCWs, they focused more on studying prevalently the lived experiences about the workplace violence, the end of life, stressor and resilience, during the COVID-19 pandemic or focused more in dementia and heart failure, but not on feelings and working conditions. METHODS: The study was carried out using Cohen's phenom…

Home care workers' experiences of work conditions related to their occupational health: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The need for home care workers (HCWs) is rapidly growing in Norway due to the increasingly growing elderly population. HCWs are exposed to a number of occupational hazards and physically demanding work tasks. Musculoskeletal disorders, stress, exhaustion, high sick leave rates and a high probability of being granted a disability pension are common challenges. This qualitative study explored the views of HCWs on how working conditions affect their safety, health, and wellbeing. METHODS: A descriptive and explorative design was utilised using semi-structured individual interviews wi

Moral sensitivity and professional quality of life in EMS personnel: a cross-sectional multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Moral sensitivity plays a crucial role in clinical decision-making and patient interactions among Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. Although moral sensitivity and professional quality of life have been studied in hospital-based healthcare providers, little evidence exists regarding EMS personnel, who face unique challenges such as heavy workloads, workplace violence, and frequent ethical dilemmas in unpredictable environments. These gaps highlight the necessity of investigating the relationship between moral sensitivity and professional quality of life in this context. …
