Systematic botany: Science to develop language facility.

Classification is a fundamental skill that impacts on our abilities to read and to write text. The structure and sequence inherent in the science of taxonomy can be used as the basis for instruction in reading comprehension and in writing. The use of concrete, readily manipulated materials enhances vocabulary development by allowing the teacher to label objects and processes as the student experiences them. There are numerous activities which can be employed to enrich experiential learning; these can be directly related to reading and writing exercises. Processes learned with simple materials

Apractic agraphia in a patient with normal praxis.

Most right-handed crossed aphasics are not apractic. They usually have agraphia characterized by misspellings but retain the ability to write well-formed graphemes. We describe a right-handed patient with a right parietal lesion who was aphasic and not apractic. He was unable to write any formed graphemes despite a relatively preserved ability to spell aloud. We postulate that praxis and writing are dissociated in this patient because the motor engrams for praxis were located in his left hemisphere and the engrams for writing were in his right hemisphere. In addition, he comprehended commands

Computer-based multisensory learning in children with developmental dyslexia.

PURPOSE: Several attempts have been made to remediate developmental dyslexia using various training environments. Based on the well-known retrieval structure model, the memory strength of phonemes and graphemes should be strengthened by visual and auditory associations between graphemes and phonemes. Using specifically designed training software, we examined whether establishing a multitude of visuo-auditory associations might help to mitigate writing errors in children with developmental dyslexia. METHODS: Forty-three children with developmental dyslexia and 37 carefully matched normal readi

Characteristics of dyslexia and dysgraphia in a Chinese patient with semantic dementia.

We describe a 44-year-old Chinese-speaking patient with semantic dementia (SD), who demonstrates dyslexia and dysgraphia. The man was administered a series of neuropsychological inspections, including general language tests and reading and writing examinations. The patient demonstrated surface dyslexia when reading single Chinese characters aloud. While most writing errors demonstrated by the patient were orthographically similar errors and noncharacter responses, such as pictograph, logographeme, and stroke errors, rather than phonologically plausible errors that were homophonous or different

Acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia in Chinese.

Understanding how the mappings between orthography and phonology in alphabetic languages are learned, represented and processed has been enhanced by the cognitive neuropsychological investigation of patients with acquired reading and writing disorders. During the past decade, this methodology has been extended to understanding reading and writing in Chinese leading to new insights about language processing, dyslexia and dysgraphia. The aim of this paper is to review reports of patients who have acquired dyslexia and acquired dysgraphia in Chinese and describe the functional architecture of the

Errores más comunes al redactar artículos médicos originales.

One of the skills that is more in need to be strengthened in the medical area is the dissemination of knowledge. For this reason, it is necessary to provide elements that promote training in scientific writing. Identifying the most common problems when writing medical original articles for publication will provide useful resources that should contribute to the generation of knowledge. There are multiple reasons that intervene for an original article not to be accepted in a medical journal, among which failure to follow instructions for authors and methodological, design and structural problems

Factors predicting improvement in motor disability in writer's cramp treated with botulinum toxin.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors predicting improvement in motor disability in writer's cramp treated with botulinum toxin (BTX). METHODS: 47 patients with writer's cramp were treated with BTX and were evaluated by the same neurologists at initial referral, after each BTX injection, and when the effect of BTX was maximal at the time of the study. Patients and examiners simultaneously and independently rated the efficacy of BTX injections. Self assessment was a global clinical impression of the impact of treatment on writing quality, writing speed, writing errors, and legibility of handwriting;

Progressive agraphia, acalculia, and anomia: a single case report.

A case of a 50-year-old, right-handed female, mono-lingual native Spanish-speaker with a university-level education and cognitive changes is reported. Over approximately 2 years, she presented with a progressive deterioration of writing abilities associated with acalculia and anomia. An MRI disclosed a left parietal temporal atrophy. Two years later, further significant cognitive decline consistent with a dementia of the Alzheimer's type was observed. Amnesia, executive dysfunction, and ideomotor apraxia were found. Writing was severely impaired, and some difficulties in reading were observed.

Clinical agents fail silently on patient identity.

BACKGROUND: LLMs now power clinical agents that plan, call tools, and write into EHRs in routine clinical workflows today. Before clinical deployment, we must know whether agents detect patient identity faults or write through them. METHODS: We built a record environment from publicly available MIMIC-IV emergency department data. Agents copied ICD-10-CM codes from visit headers into patient records using Extract and Store tools, with "UNKNOWN" allowed when uncertain. Missing Store calls were counted as non-writes. Each run presented ten visits from one patient (clean), then one visit was tamp

The effect of magnification on sonographically measured nerve cross-sectional area.

INTRODUCTION: The primary aim of this investigation was to determine whether use of write-zoom magnification affects sonographically determined cross-sectional area (CSA) of peripheral nerves. METHODS: CSAs of the median (MN) and posterior interosseous (PIN) nerves were measured in 22 limbs from 11 asymptomatic volunteers using both standard imaging and write-zoom magnification. CSA measurements were repeated on the same images 1 week later. RESULTS: The average CSA of write-zoomed images for the MN was significantly larger at both measurement sessions (week 1: 11.1 mm(2) write-zoom vs. 10.0

[On the diagnostics of structural deficits in dyslexia in clinical work: relationship between different achievement indicators].

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to research the relationship between different indicators used in the diagnosis of reading and writing disabilities in clinical work. METHODS: In addition to being tested for intelligence and writing ability, a total of 141 children in second and fourth grade were submitted to tests assessing their ability for speech intelligibility in noise, dichotic listening, phoneme discrimination, as well as auditory short-term memory for digits and non-words. In a partial sample of 40 children with average intelligence manifesting at least a standard deviation between

BACKGROUND: Conventional automated writing evaluation systems typically provide insufficient support for students with special needs, especially in tonal language acquisition such as Chinese, primarily because of rigid feedback mechanisms and limited customisation. OBJECTIVE: This research develops context-aware Hierarchical AI Tutor for Writing Enhancement(CHATWELL), an intelligent tutoring platform that incorporates optimised large language models to deliver instantaneous, customised, and multi-dimensional writing assistance for Chinese language learners, with special consideration for thos

The efficacy of a brief internet-based self-help intervention for the bereaved.

Research so far has shown little evidence that written disclosure facilitates recovery from bereavement. There are good reasons to assume that written disclosure may only benefit those bereaved who are at risk for developing problems or who are experiencing significant psychological problems as a result of their loss, and only when appropriate writing instructions are used. Drawing on previous work in the area of post-traumatic stress, a writing intervention was designed to test these assumptions. Bereaved individuals, who were still significantly distressed by their loss, were randomly assign

Heidelberg Phoneme Discrimination Test (HLAD): normative data for children of the third grade and correlation with spelling ability.

OBJECTIVE: The Heidelberg Phoneme Discrimination Test (HLAD), developed and standardized in 1998, is widely used in the differential diagnosis of dyslexia. Normative data have only been available for children of the 2nd and 4th grades, while norms for the 3rd grade are still missing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed three HLAD subtests [auditory phoneme discrimination, kinesthetic phoneme discrimination (repeating minimal pairs) and phoneme analysis] in 140 children of the 3rd grade from eight elementary schools. Writing capacity was tested via DRT3. RESULTS: Comparing children of the 2nd,

Mirror movements of the left arm following peripheral damage to the preferred right arm.

Cerebral damage which renders the preferred arm useless may lead patients to use their non-preferred arm for everyday tasks including writing. In these circumstances, mirror writing and other mirror movements may occur. The present study on 10 formerly right-handed patients was carried out to determine whether similar phenomena occurred when serious damage to the right arm itself had occurred, cerebral function remaining intact or any damage being coincidental and non-focal. The patients were asked to describe the events that had occurred when they started using their left hand, to carry out a

Idea units in notes and summaries for read texts by keyboard and pencil in middle childhood students with specific learning disabilities: Cognitive and brain findings.

Seven children with dyslexia and/or dysgraphia (2 girls, 5 boys, M=11 years) completed fMRI connectivity scans before and after twelve weekly computerized lessons in strategies for reading source material, taking notes, and writing summaries by touch typing or groovy pencils. During brain scanning they completed two reading comprehension tasks-one involving single sentences and one involving multiple sentences. From before to after intervention, fMRI connectivity magnitude changed significantly during sentence level reading comprehension (from right angular gyrus→right Broca's) and during text

Inhibition of the dorsal premotor cortex does not repair surround inhibition in writer's cramp patients.

Writer's cramp is a task-specific form of focal dystonia, characterized by abnormal movements and postures of the hand and arm during writing. Two consistent abnormalities in its pathophysiology are a loss of surround inhibition and overactivity of the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd). This study aimed to assess a possible link between these two phenomena by investigating whether PMd inhibition leads to an improvement of surround inhibition, in parallel with previously demonstrated writing improvement. Fifteen writer's cramp patients and ten controls performed a simple motor hand task during which

Writer's cramp.

Writer's cramp is the most common form of focal, task-specific dystonia. Symptoms frequently evolve in the setting of repetitive hand movements and increased writing demands, and clinical presentations demonstrate a variety of different dystonic patterns of the upper extremity such as while writing or holding a writing utensil. However, why writer's cramp develops still remains much of a mystery. Clinical evaluation of patients with writer's cramp and various theories regarding its pathophysiology are reviewed. Treatment can be challenging and often involves a combination of pharmacologic (e.g

Linguistic evaluation of Profet II: a pilot project.

Profet, a word prediction program, was designed to accelerate the writing process and to minimize the writing effort of persons with motor dysfunction. It has also proved to be beneficial in text construction for persons with linguistic impairment such as dyslexia. With increasing linguistic demands on support for individuals with severe reading and writing difficulties/dyslexia, the need for an improved version of Profet arose. Thus, Profet II was designed. In this study, a procedure for evaluating Profet II has been developed. Results from a single-case evaluation study with a person with dy
