Yellow fever and dengue are viral infections that in urban centres are transmitted by the same arthropod vector, a mosquito of the genus Aedes. In order to estimate the risk of an epidemic of urban yellow fever in a dengue-infested area we calculated the threshold in the basic reproduction number, R0, of dengue, above which any single sylvatic yellow fever-infected individual will trigger an urban yellow fever epidemic. Specifically, we analysed the relationship between the extrinsic incubation period and the duration of viraemia, from which it is possible to define the R0 for dengue that woul…

The history of yellow fever is discussed with relevance to the Lisbon epidemic of 1857. Robert S.D. Lyons, professor of medicine at the Catholic University Medical School in Dublin, was given leave by the rector to investigate its pathology and set off for Portugal in November. He performed autopsies and studied possible environmental factors, with negative results. The professor's "prolonged absence" began to worry the rector in January but, before long, Dr Lyons returned to his duties and published a report.

Application of the silver-staining technique to air-dried chromosome preparations of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, revealed the following: 1) intensely stained pericentromeric regions in all chromosomes including the Y chromosome in spermatogonia, and during the primary and secondary spermatocytes; 2) the presence of prepachytene that were not reported earlier; 3) a nucleolus organizing region that persisted up to the late pachytene stage; and 4) rod or ring-like centrioles in pachytene and diplotene stages. In addition, varying numbers (1-4) of silver-stained, ring-like structures…

Earlier epidemiological concepts are discussed briefly. Attention is focussed on several of the puzzling problems in the epidemiology of the disease as seen today. The recurring outbreaks of yellow fever in regions where it has been absent, as well as the absence of yellow fever in regions where the vectors exist are discussed. Features of vaccination are discussed, including the long persistence of humoral antibodies and long duration of effective protection. The possibility of changes in virulence of yellow fever strains is mentioned. In some of the modern outbreaks, virulence for human bein…
