The effects of acute and chronic steady state methadone on memory retrieval in rats.

RATIONALE: Although widely prescribed to treat opioid addiction, little is known about the possible side effects of methadone on memory functions. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of acute and chronic methadone on memory retrieval in rats and to explore the selectivity of possible deficits. METHODS: Administration of acute (0, 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/kg SC) and chronic steady state methadone (0, 10, 30, and 55 mg/kg/day SC by osmotic mini-pump) was tested on recall of three different types of information: stimulus-reward (10-arm parallel maze), stimulus-response (8-arm

Perceptual Error Identification of Human and Synthesized Voices.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To verify the discriminatory ability of human and synthesized voice samples. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective study. METHODS: A total of 70 subjects, 20 voice specialist speech-language pathologists (V-SLPs), 20 general SLPs (G-SLPs), and 30 naive listeners (NLs) participated of a listening task that was simply to classify the stimuli as human or synthesized. Samples of 36 voices, 18 human and 18 synthesized vowels, male and female (9 each), with different type and degree of deviation, were presented with 50% of repetition to verify intrarater consistency. Human voi

Brainstem mediation of the stapedius muscle reflex in hydranencephaly.

Hydranencephaly is a rare condition in which the cerebral hemispheres are absent at birth and are replaced by membranous sacs in a cerebrospinal fluid-filled cranium. Surviving hydranencephalic patients have a functional brainstem and possible remnants of the cerebral cortex. This case report examines hearing function and the integrity of the brainstem mediated stapedius muscle reflex (SMR) in an adult with hydranencephaly, using middle ear impedance change measures. The brainstem mediated ipsilateral and cross-brainstem contralateral SMRs were elicited in the right ear at normal threshold lev

Threshold estimation using the "chained stimuli" auditory brain stem response technique.

The chained stimuli ABR method, which allows acquisition of data for a seven-point latency-intensity function for both ears in approximately 35 min, is described. Testing of 22 ears with a simulated conductive loss, and 20 ears with sensorineural impairment, indicates that the chained stimuli method provides equivalent threshold estimates to that obtained with the conventional ABR measurement technique.

Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound in Peripheral and Central Nerve Repair: Mechanisms and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies.

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has emerged as a versatile, non-invasive physical modality with growing potential in regenerative medicine and neural repair. Advances in ultrasound physics and biomedical engineering have enabled precise spatiotemporal control of acoustic stimulation, positioning therapeutic ultrasound as an alternative to conventional pharmacological and surgical interventions that often suffer from limited targeting and substantial side effects. Unlike high-intensity focused ultrasound, which relies primarily on thermal ablation, LIPUS operates within a low-energy, no…

A guide to the effective use of otoacoustic emissions.

Otoacoustic emission test instruments are now entering routine audiological practice. Two general classes of technique are in use in laboratory work--those employing spectrum analysers to observe the continuous generation of OAEs, both stimulated or unstimulated, and those using transient stimulation and waveform averaging to extract a delayed OAE or "cochlear echo" waveform from ear canal sound. Both methods have particular advantages in clinical applications. The transient OAE type of method has proved very effective in screening applications, particularly in neonates. It is possible to perf

Electric hearing and tinnitus suppression by noninvasive ear stimulation.

While noninvasive brain stimulation is convenient and cost effective, its utility is limited by the substantial distance between scalp elect … t noninvasive electric stimulation of the cochlea may restore neural activities that are missing in acoustic stimulation. We placed an electrode in the ear canal or on the tympanic membrane in 25 human adults (10 females) and compared their stimulation efficiency by characterizing the electrically-evoked auditory sensation. Relative to ear canal stimulation, tympanic …

Countermovement jump analysis: Effects of acoustic and visual stimuli on jump performance in volleyball players evaluated by inertial measurement unit.

The ability to perform maximal vertical jumps (VJs) significantly affects athletic performance in several sports, such as volleyball, with a paucity of studies investigating the effects of different sensory stimuli on VJ performance. To the best of our knowledge, no study quantitatively assessed the variations of spatial-temporal and kinetic parameters during Countermovement Jump-Free Arms (CMJ-FA) execution in different acoustic and visual conditions. The aim of the present study is to explore the effects of visual and acoustic stimuli, in conditions considered incentive and disincentive, on

Transcranial alternating current stimulation selectively modulates aperiodic EEG component: Unveiling alternative mechanisms of modulation.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) mechanisms remain poorly understood. While tACS is expected to modulate periodic electroencephalography (EEG) activity due to the imposition of oscillatory alternating currents, it may also modulate the aperiodic EEG component, suggesting alternative tACS mechanisms that have not yet been explored. This study examined whether 20-minute tACS session delivered at 40 Hz over C3/C4 can selectively modulate periodic and aperiodic components. METHODS: We implemented a paired, counterbalanced, and sham-controlled design consisting of two

A computational modelling framework for assessing information transmission with cochlear implants.

Computational models are useful tools to investigate scientific questions that would be complicated to address using an experimental approach. In the context of cochlear-implants (CIs), being able to simulate the neural activity evoked by these devices could help in understanding their limitations to provide natural hearing. Here, we present a computational modelling framework to quantify the transmission of information from sound to spikes in the auditory nerve of a CI user. The framework includes a model to simulate the electrical current waveform sensed by each auditory nerve fiber (electro

Multisensory representations of space and time in sensory cortices.

Clear evidence demonstrated a supramodal organization of sensory cortices with multisensory processing occurring even at early stages of information encoding. Within this context, early recruitment of sensory areas is necessary for the development of fine domain-specific (i.e., spatial or temporal) skills regardless of the sensory modality involved, with auditory areas playing a crucial role in temporal processing and visual areas in spatial processing. Given the domain-specificity and the multisensory nature of sensory areas, in this study, we hypothesized that preferential domains of represe

Audio-visual stimulation for visual compensatory functions in stroke survivors with visual field defect: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hemianopia is a complete or partial blindness in the visual fields of both eyes, commonly caused by cerebral infarction. It has been hypothesized that systematic audio-visual (AV) stimulation of the blind hemifield can improve accuracy and search times, probably due to the stimulation of bimodal representations in the superior colliculus (SC), an important multisensory structure involved in both the initiation and execution of saccades. METHODS: A narrative synthesis of the findings is presented to highlight how AV rehabilitation impacts on patients with hemianopia including visua

Motor Circuit and Superior Temporal Sulcus Activities Linked to Individual Differences in Multisensory Speech Perception.

Integrating multimodal information into a unified perception is a fundamental human capacity. McGurk effect is a remarkable multisensory illusion that demonstrates a percept different from incongruent auditory and visual syllables. However, not all listeners perceive the McGurk illusion to the same degree. The neural basis for individual differences in modulation of multisensory integration and syllabic perception remains largely unclear. To probe the possible involvement of specific neural circuits in individual differences in multisensory speech perception, we first implemented a behavioral

Shared Physiological Correlates of Multisensory and Expectation-Based Facilitation.

Perceptual performance in a visual task can be enhanced by simultaneous multisensory information, but can also be enhanced by a symbolic or amodal cue inducing a specific expectation. That similar benefits can arise from multisensory information and within-modality expectation raises the question of whether the underlying neurophysiological processes are the same or distinct. We investigated this by comparing the influence of the following three types of auxiliary probabilistic cues on visual motion discrimination in humans: (1) acoustic motion, (2) a premotion visual symbolic cue, and (3) a p

Intersensory redundancy promotes infant detection of prosody in infant-directed speech.

Prosody, or the intonation contours of speech, conveys emotion and intention to the listener and provides infants with an early basis for detecting meaning in speech. Infant-directed speech (IDS) is characterized by exaggerated prosody, slower tempo, and elongated pauses, all amodal properties detectable across the face and voice. Although speech is an audiovisual event, it has been studied primarily as a unimodal auditory stream without the synchronized dynamic face of the speaker. According to the intersensory redundancy hypothesis, redundancy across the senses facilitates perceptual learnin

Auditory brainstem implants.

The development of cochlear implantation has allowed the majority of patients deafened after the development of language to regain significant auditory benefit. In a subset of patients, however, loss of hearing results from destruction of the cochlear nerves, rendering cochlear implantation ineffective. The most common cause of bilateral destruction of the cochlear nerves is neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). The hallmark of this genetic disorder is the development of bilateral acoustic neuromas, the growth or removal of which causes deafness in most patients. Patients with NF2 may benefit from d

Fetal habituation to vibroacoustic stimulation in uncomplicated postterm pregnancies.

OBJECTIVES: Testing of fetal habituation to repeated vibroacoustic stimulation might give additional information concerning the fetal condition and central nervous system (CNS) functioning in postterm pregnancies. This study is designed to investigate whether healthy postterm fetuses are able to habituate and if so, if the habituation pattern of postterm fetuses differs from that of term fetuses. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty women with an uncomplicated pregnancy beyond 41 weeks gestational age (GA) participated, and 37 women with a GA between 37 and 40 weeks served as controls. The vibroacoustic stim…

Sodium pentobarbital: sensory and associative effects in classical conditioning of the rabbit nictitating membrane response.

Four experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sodium pentobarbital (0, 3, 9, and 15 mg/kg) on the acquisition of the rabbit's classically conditioned nictitating membrane response (NMR) and to determine the locus of the drug's effects on sensory, motor, associative, and nonassociative processes. In experiment 1, classical conditioning of the NMR was accomplished by pairing tone and light conditioned stimuli (CSs) with paraorbital shock as the unconditioned stimulus (US). The experiment revealed that pentobarbital retarded the acquisition of conditioned responses (CRs) to both ton
