Phenotype-Specific Transcriptomic Responses to Glucocorticoid Signaling in the Prefrontal Cortex and Dorsal Raphe Nucleus Following Chronic Social Stress.

Chronic stress produces marked individual differences in behavioral adaptation and glucocorticoid sensitivity, but the molecular basis of this variability remains poorly understood. Here, we examined transcriptional responses to glucocorticoid receptor activation after chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) in male C57BL/6J mice. Based on behavioral responses during social interaction, stressed animals were classified into active coping strategy (AS) and passive coping strategy (PS) phenotypes. A total of 24 h after the final stress session, mice received 2 µg/g of dexamethasone (DEX) or a saline

Mechanistic insights into selenium nanoparticles: Comparative effects in plant and animal systems.

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), characterized by high bioavailability and low toxicity, have emerged as a class of redox-active nanomaterials that can modulate cellular oxidative states. However, previous reviews have largely considered the agricultural and animal-health applications of SeNPs separately, whereas an integrated comparison of their uptake, biotransformation, and redox-regulatory mechanisms across plants and animals has remained lacking. SeNPs uptake and transformation are influenced by species characteristics, nanoparticle properties, and application strategies. In plants, SeNPs

Antibiotic resistance genes against "last-resort" antibiotics within the One Health framework: Dissemination, mechanisms, and AI-driven opportunities.

Last-resort antibiotic resistance genes (LARGs), resistance determinants that compromise last-line antibiotics, including blaNDM, mcr and tet(X), are emerging environmental contaminants that undermine the efficacy of carbapenems, polymyxins and tigecycline. Their growing presence in wastewater, soils, sediments, livestock environments and aerosols raises concerns about environmental contamination and human exposure within the One Health context. Although originally confined to clinical settings, these determinants are now widespread across natural and engineered environments. Their disseminati

Loss of Ca2 + signaling fidelity during aging: Mitochondrial dysfunction, senescence, and cognitive-motor decline.

Aging is characterized by a progressive decline in cellular homeostasis that ultimately compromises tissue integrity, regenerative capacity, and organismal function. Among the molecular processes increasingly recognized as central regulators of aging, intracellular Ca2+ signaling has emerged as a major determinant of metabolic adaptation, stress responses, inflammation, and cell fate. Ca2+ controls essential biological functions in virtually every tissue. Importantly, the remarkable versatility of Ca2+ signaling depends on the precise spatial and temporal coordination of channels, pumps, excha

Dietary Microplastic Exposure in Athletes: Implications for Metabolism, Gut Health, and Performance.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental contaminants increasingly detected in foods, beverages, and food-contact materials, making dietary intake a relevant route of human exposure. In sports nutrition, this issue may be particularly important because athletes often have high food and fluid consumption, frequent use of packaged sports nutrition products, dietary supplements, bottled beverages, and sport-specific hydration strategies. This narrative review, supported by a structured literature search, examines dietary MP exposure and its potential relevance to gastrointestinal function,

Meta-analysis reveals a core iron-responsive gene signature in Mycobacterium tuberculosis linking siderophore biosynthesis, virulence, and metabolic adaptation.

The meta-analysis integrates transcriptomic data from two independent datasets (GSE8732 and GSE84554) to elucidate Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)'s transcriptional response to iron limitation, a key host defense mechanism. The study identifies a core set of consistently differentially expressed genes (DEGs) critical for Mtb's survival under iron-restricted conditions. Key upregulated genes include those involved in siderophore biosynthesis (mbtA, mbtB, mbtE, mbtI), which are essential for iron acquisition, and components of the ESX secretion system (esxG, esxH, esxR, esxS), linking iron scav

The Spatial Distribution of Brain Metastasis Is Determined by the Heterogeneity of the Brain Microenvironment.

It is now understood that brain metastases do not occur randomly but have distinct spatial patterns depending on the origin of the cancer. According to the "seed and soil" hypothesis, the final colonization of metastatic cells is the result of their adaptation to the altered environment. To investigate the most favorable microenvironment for brain metastasis, we analyzed neuroimaging data from 177 patients with breast cancer brain metastasis and 548 patients with lung cancer brain metastasis to create a replicable probabilistic map of metastatic locations. Additionally, we used population-base

Multiscale modeling of bone tissue with surface and permeability control.

Natural biological materials usually present a hierarchical arrangement with various structural levels. The biomechanical behavior of the complex hierarchical structure of bone is investigated with models that address the various levels corresponding to different scales. Models that simulate the bone remodeling process concurrently at different scales are in development. We present a multiscale model for bone tissue adaptation that considers the two top levels, whole bone and trabecular architecture. The bone density distribution is calculated at the macroscale (whole bone) level, and the trab

In situ processing of fibrous hydrogels by photochemistry for adaptive cellular microenvironments.

Omnipresent in biology, fibrous networks like collagen possess unique properties: dynamic network via crosslinking and degradation. This intrinsic adaptivity plays a critical role in regulating cell behavior via cell-matrix interactions. Built from biological building blocks, however, these networks are challenging to manipulate or even control. Here, we introduce dynamic network regulation via photochemical control in a synthetic and fibrous highly biomimetic hydrogel. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that the dynamic control over the mechanical properties of this adaptive in vitro model

Smart plants: memory and communication without brains.

The immobility of plants is consistent with their principal function: collecting light to provide photosynthetic substrate for the biological system. Their immobility does impose limitations on some basic requirements, such as the need for pollination, for seed dispersal, and for protection against herbivores. Meeting these 3 needs will logically necessitate some ability for plant communication - at least a capability for beneficial adaptive behavior. Three types of plant behavior provide evidence of memory and communication abilities: a capability for memory, a capability for measuring time,

Whole Genome Sequencing of Chinese White Dolphin (Sousa chinensis) for High-Throughput Screening of Antihypertensive Peptides.

Chinese white dolphin (Sousa chinensis), also known as the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, has been classified as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is a special cetacean species that lives in tropical and subtropical nearshore waters, with significant differences from other cetaceans. Here, we sequenced and assembled a draft genome of the Chinese white dolphin with a total length of 2.3 Gb and annotation of 18,387 protein-coding genes. Genes from certain expanded families are potentially involved in DNA replication and repairing, suggesting that they may be related to

[Arthropodan vectors of human parasites: their pathology and defence reactions (author's transl)].

Many infectious diseases of man are transmitted by arthropods. It is not known whether the carriers were primarily susceptible or insusceptible as the cycle first came into existence. Similarly so little is understood, why some arthropods are suitable vectors and other close relatives are not suitable. Only the hypothesis that the agents are original parasites and not at all commensals or symbionts can reasonably explain the evolution of the cycles. It is shown by means of numerous examples how the vector can be damaged by the parasite. Some organs of the vector might become unfunctional, the

Innate and adaptive immune responses in respiratory virus infection: implications for the clinic.

INTRODUCTION: The innate immune response is the first line of defense and consists of physical, chemical and cellular defenses. The adaptive immune response is the second line of defense and is pathogen-specific. Innate immunity occurs immediately while adaptive immunity develops upon pathogen exposure, and is long-lasting, highly specific, and sustained by memory T cells. Respiratory virus infection typically induces effective immunity but over-exuberant responses are associated with pathophysiology. Cytokines expressed in response to viral infection can enhance biological responses, activate

Beyond antigen matching: compatibility intelligence theory for transfusion as an emergent biological system.

BACKGROUND: Despite major advances in serologic testing, extended phenotyping, and blood group genomics, clinically similar transfusion exposures may result in markedly different immune and clinical outcomes. Existing compatibility strategies do not fully explain this biological variability. OBJECTIVES: To examine transfusion compatibility as an emergent donor-recipient biological state and propose a systems-level conceptual framework that integrates established biological determinants into a testable model for future precision transfusion medicine. METHODS: This narrative review critically

Integrated Pest Management of Fruit Mites in Apple Orchards: Biological and Chemical Control, Resistance Management, and Regional Perspectives from Southeastern Kazakhstan.

Fruit mites, particularly Panonychus ulmi, Tetranychus urticae, and eriophyid mites, are among the most economically important arthropod pests in apple orchards, causing significant reductions in photosynthetic efficiency, fruit quality, and yield. Their management has traditionally relied on chemical acaricides; however, the widespread development of resistance, adverse effects on beneficial arthropods, and increasing environmental concerns have highlighted the limitations of pesticide-dependent control strategies. This review critically evaluates current advances in the management of major f

Decontamination industrial pharmaceutical wastewater by combining solar photo-Fenton and biological treatment.

Characterization and treatment of a real pharmaceutical wastewater containing 775 mg dissolved organic carbon per liter by a solar photo-Fenton/biotreatment were studied. There were also many inorganic compounds present in the matrix. The most important chemical in this wastewater was nalidixic acid (45 mg/L), an antibiotic pertaining to the quinolone group. A Zahn-Wellens test demonstrated that the real bulk organic content of the wastewater was biodegradable, but only after long biomass adaptation; however, the nalidixic acid concentration remained constant, showing that it cannot be biodegr

Sea lice parasites and salmonids - a hormesis perspective.

Low-dose exposure to pesticides can have stimulatory effects on the biological traits of arthropods, a hallmark of hormesis, which induces adaptive responses. In this forum article we postulate that such responses could be induced in sea lice ectoparasitic copepods, offering a perspective for scientific advance and improved practical solutions.

Beyond adrenal fatigue: reframing the adrenal stress index through neutrophil-mediated glucocorticoid resistance.

BACKGROUND: The Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) is widely used in functional medicine but dismissed by mainstream endocrinology. Traditionally interpreted as a measure of adrenal secretory capacity, it has been criticized for lacking clinical validity. Yet salivary cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) may offer more than redundant hormone monitoring: they may capture the organism's ability to maintain resilience against chronic inflammation. HYPOTHESIS: We propose that the ASI should be reframed not as a test of adrenal "fatigue," but as a candidate biomarker of inflammatory adaptat
