Top-down approach to vestibular compensation: translational lessons from vestibular rehabilitation.

This review examines vestibular compensation and vestibular rehabilitation from a unified translational research perspective. Laboratory studies illustrate neurobiological principles of vestibular compensation at the molecular, cellular and systems levels in animal models that inform vestibular rehabilitation practice. However, basic research has been hampered by an emphasis on 'naturalistic' recovery, with time after insult and drug interventions as primary dependent variables. The vestibular rehabilitation literature, on the other hand, provides information on how the degree of compensation

Acoustic communication in crocodilians: information encoding and species specificity of juvenile calls.

In the Crocodylia order, all species are known for their ability to produce sounds in several communication contexts. Though recent experimental studies have brought evidence of the important biological role of young crocodilian calls, especially at hatching time, the juvenile vocal repertoire still needs to be clarified in order to describe thoroughly the crocodilian acoustic communication channel. The goal of this study is to investigate the acoustic features (structure and information coding) in the contact call of juveniles from three different species (Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus,

Prenatal and neonatal adaptations with a focus on the respiratory system.

Among the modifications that occur during the neonatal period, pulmonary development is the most critical. The neonate's lungs must be able to perform adequate gas exchange, which was previously accomplished by the placenta. Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome is defined as insufficient surfactant production or pulmonary structural immaturity and is specifically relevant to preterm newborns. Prenatal maternal betamethasone treatment of bitches at 55 days of gestation leads to structural changes in the neonatal lung parenchyma and consequently an improvement in the preterm neonatal respirato

Novel potential regulators of maternal adaptations during lactation: tuberoinfundibular peptide 39 and amylin.

Maternal adaptations during lactation include milk synthesis and ejection, the appearance of maternal behaviours, reduced stress response, suppression of the ovarian cycle, and increased food and fluid intake. Several recently identified neuropeptides may participate in these adaptations, and we focus on two of them in the present study: tuberoinfundibular peptide of 39 residues (TIP39) and amylin. TIP39 is the ligand of the parathyroid hormone 2 receptor (PTH2 receptor) is induced in the posterior intralaminar complex of the thalamus (PIL) during lactation. TIP39 neurones in the PIL are activ

[Activity of antioxidant system of Aspergillus versicolor with radioadaptive properties under conditions of exposure to radiation].

Melanin pigments were revealed for the first time in Aspergillus versicolor strains. Ionizing irradiation practically did not influence melanin synthesis in A. versicolor strains with radioadaptive properties and stimulated its synthesis in the control strain, which did not show such properties. High level of superoxide dismutase activity (from 100 up to 720 U/mg of protein) was revealed in the investigated strains. The irradiation in exponential phase of growth did not practically influence or raised activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the strains with radioadaptive properties and oppre

Brucella adaptation and survival at the crossroad of metabolism and virulence.

"In vivo" bacterial nutrition, i.e. the nature of the metabolic network and substrate(s) used by bacteria within their host, is a fundamental aspect of pathogenic or symbiotic lifestyles. A typical example are the Brucella spp., facultative intracellular pathogens responsible for chronic infections of animals and humans. Their virulence relies on their ability to modulate immune response and the physiology of host cells, but the fine-tuning of their metabolism in the host during infection appears increasingly crucial. Here we review new insights on the links between Brucella virulence and meta

Compensatory strategies following visual search training in patients with homonymous hemianopia: an eye movement study.

A total of 29 patients with homonymous visual field defects without neglect practised visual search in 20 daily sessions, over a period of 4 weeks. Patients searched for a single randomly positioned target amongst distractors displayed for 3 s. After training patients demonstrated significantly shorter reaction times for search stimuli (Pambakian et al. in J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 75:1443-1448, 2004). In this study, patients achieved improved search efficiency after training by altering their oculomotor behaviour in the following ways: (1) patients directed a higher proportion of fixation

Long-term regulation of carotid body function: acclimatization and adaptation--invited article.

Physiological responses to hypoxia either continuous (CH) or intermittent (IH) depend on the O(2)-sensing ability of the peripheral arterial chemoreceptors, especially the carotid bodies, and the ensuing reflexes play important roles in maintaining homeostasis. The purpose of this article is to summarize the effects of CH and IH on carotid body function and the underlying mechanisms. CH increases baseline carotid body activity and sensitizes the response to acute hypoxia. These effects are associated with hyperplasia of glomus cells and neovascularization. Enhanced hypoxic sensitivity is due t

Are plant pathogen populations adapted for encounter with their host? A case study of phenological synchrony between oak and an obligate fungal parasite along an altitudinal gradient.

Biotrophic fungal pathogens are expected to have adapted to their host plants for phenological synchrony, to optimize the possibility of contacts leading to infections. We investigated the patterns and causes of variation in phenological synchrony in the oak-powdery mildew pathosystem, a major disease in natural ecosystems. The study was carried out along an altitudinal gradient, representing a wide temperature range, in mature oak stands. Both sporulation (pathogen infective stage) and oak flushing (host susceptible stage) were delayed with increasing elevation, but with a significantly diffe

An integrated classification of pediatric inflammatory diseases, based on the concepts of autoinflammation and the immunological disease continuum.

Historically, pediatric inflammatory diseases were viewed as autoimmune but developments in genetics of monogenic disease have supported our proposal that "inflammation against self" be viewed as an immunologic disease continuum (IDC), with genetic disorders of adaptive and innate immunity at either end. Innate immune-mediated diseases may be associated with significant tissue destruction without evident adaptive immune responses and are designated as autoinflammatory due to distinct immunopathologic features. However, the majority of pediatric inflammatory disorders are situated along this ID

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in an evolutionary perspective.

The proximate mechanisms underlying gestational nausea and vomiting have been intensively studied, but the possibility that the symptoms themselves serve a useful function has only recently been considered seriously. We synthesized evidence to evaluate various hypotheses for the adaptive significance of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, as well as the possibility that symptoms are nonfunctional byproducts of pregnancy hormones. We found greatest support for the hypothesis that normal levels of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (excluding hyperemesis) protect pregnant women and their embryos fro

Growth of the vascular tree.

Major changes occur in the pulmonary circulation at birth. Failure of normal adaptation leads to pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. The basis for this may be abnormal growth of the lung in utero or a failure of the mechanisms which lead to vasodilatation in the newborn period. This article describes normal development of the pulmonary arteries and veins, their branching pattern and structure and discusses the factors which may control this growth. Endothelial function and dysfunction are crucial in adaptation, and new experimental studies are aiding our understanding of the control and act

Apneic oxygen uptake in the torpid pocket mouse Perognathus parvus.

The apneas of many torpid mammals can persist longer than estimated O2 stores allow. This suggests that some O2 is acquired during these apneas by either cutaneous uptake or by a nonventilatory flux down an open airway (tracheal flux). Previous experiments confirmed apneic O2 uptake in the bat Eptesicus fuscus with the conclusion that the uptake most likely occurred by tracheal flux. However, the bat's large cutaneous wing area remained a potential source of cutaneous O2 uptake, leaving uncertainty regarding the mechanism of O2 uptake, particularly in regard to some evidence suggesting that sm

[Characteristic features of ecological animal husbandry].

In recent years conventional livestock farming has been impressively successful referring to the increase in performance of farm animals and to the decrease in production costs. On the contrary, following the dictate of production-intensification, animal health and welfare as well as environmentally friendly production have been pushed into the background because of being cost- and labour-intensive. Evaluations of animal health status of farm animals indicate that a considerable number of farm animals cannot cope with the requests of increase in performance. This may be due either to physiolog

Response of Brucella suis 1330 and B. canis RM6/66 to growth at acid pH and induction of an adaptive acid tolerance response.

Acid pH is an environmental stress often encountered by Brucella during both the "environmental" and the "pathogenic" stages of its life. We have investigated the behaviour of B. suis biovar 1 and B. canis in acid conditions. Growth at suboptimal pH was characterized by a dramatic reduction in growth yield due to an early onset of stationary phase. B. suis was more resistant to low pH than B. canis, which lysed at pH 4.6. Viable counts measured after a 4-h acid shock at pH 3.2 showed that the relative survival of B. suis was 1,000-fold greater than that of B. canis. An adaptive acid tolerance

Postural adaptations to workbench modifications in standing workers.

Surveys have shown that many workers operate under conditions that require constrained standing. The aim of this study was to investigate postural adaptations in constrained standing to facilitate the development of design guidelines for standing workspaces. Standing postures were observed in six different workspaces that were designed using combinations of task distance (which was either constrained or unconstrained) and foot position (which was constrained, unconstrained or employed a footrest). Subjects at work were recorded stereophotogrammetrically and postural variables were obtained in
