BACKGROUND: Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) is expressed in both normal and malignant epithelial cells. Although the expression of TGF-alpha has been extensively studied in some human epithelial neoplasms, its expression in adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) of the salivary gland has not been reported.
METHODS: This study used an immunohistochemical technique to assess the expression of TGF-alpha in 40 ACC specimens from the salivary glands, seven specimens from labial minor salivary glands adjacent to mucoceles, and five specimens from normal submandibular glands.
RESULTS: In the

PURPOSE: To examine the efficacy of fast neutron radiotherapy for the treatment of locally advanced and/or recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck and to identify prognostic variables associated with local-regional control and survival.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: One hundred fifty-nine patients with nonmetastatic, previously unirradiated, locally advanced, and/or recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the head and neck region were treated with fast neutron radiotherapy during the years 1985-1997. One hundred fifty-one patients had either unresectable disease, or gross residua

AIMS: Hybrid tumours of the salivary gland are rare neoplasms that have been described only in the parotid and palate. Their recognition is important particularly when the component tumours have different biological behaviours. The occurrence of a submandibular hybrid tumour has not been reported.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe a case of a 36-year-old woman with a hybrid carcinoma composed of salivary duct adenocarcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right submandibular gland. There was no evidence of a pre-existing or concurrent pleomorphic adenoma. The presence of the two components

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between clinicopathologic features and bone invasion in adenoid cystic carcinoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma were included. Of 17 patients with suspected bone invasion based on clinical and/or radiographic findings, 13 also underwent histologic evaluation.
RESULTS: Bone invasion was detected in nine patients. Bone involvement was radiographically classified as erosive, diffuse invasive, or minimal change. No tumor infiltration into the surrounding bone marrow spaces was observed in the erosive-type tumors.

We studied a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on short-term culture, and the karyotype revealed only an abnormal cell line with the following changes: partial trisomy 5q, 6q deletion, monosomy of chromosome 9,der(10)t(10;15), a possible ring chromosome 22, and loss of the Y chromosome. The implication of chromosomes 6 and 9 is considered in relation to the karyotypic evolution of this type of tumor.

Otolaryngologic manifestations of AIDS have been described in the past. In this study, I had examined 14 adults with nasal obstruction and mouth breathing. Nine patients also reported deafness--unilateral in three of them and bilateral in six. All of them revealed a mass in the nasopharynx, either on the posterior rhinoscopy or the x-ray neck-lateral view. To exclude nasopharyngeal malignancy, all of the patients underwent examination of the nasopharynx while under general anaesthesia and biopsy. The histopathologic diagnosis in every patient was nonspecific, reactive lymphoid hyperplasia, whi

Two patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of Bartholin's gland and a review of the relevant literature are presented. With the inclusion of these two patients, there are now 24 cases reported. Both patients had large vulvar masses with a short clinical history, and several local tumor recurrences within the first 21/2 years after radical vulvectomy. The characteristic cribriform pattern and perineural involvement in addition to vascular invasion were present in the pathological material. No metastases were found in the inguino-femoral lymph nodes removed. Both patients are alive, without evid

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland is a rare tumor, although it is the malignancy most frequently arising in the gland. Treatment has been unsuccessful generally, with a 15-year survival of less than 20 percent. Our experience with this tumor in a 61-year-old woman has led to a proposal for therapeutic management based on awareness of the lesion's natural history, an understanding of regional anatomy, and familiarity with therapies reported in the literature. The feasibility of adequate tumor ablation is determined from preoperative evaluation, including CT scan, initial explorator

BACKGROUND: Prostatic adenoid cystic (basal cell) carcinoma is an extremely rare malignant epithelial neoplasm, accounting for a very low proportion of all prostate malignancies. Its clinical symptoms and imaging features are non-specific, and serum PSA levels are mostly normal or only mildly elevated, posing diagnostic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male presented with progressive hematuria and lower urinary tract obstruction symptoms. His PSA level was not significantly elevated. Imaging revealed a prostatic space-occupying lesion with multiple adjacent small lymph nodes. Hist

Solid-basaloid adenoid cystic carcinoma (SB-AdCC) of the breast is a rare neoplasm. We report the case of a 78-year-old woman who presented with a progressively enlarging right breast mass over 3 years. Clinical examination revealed a 6-cm mass with visible skin ulceration and right axillary lymphadenopathy. Imaging suggested malignancy, and biopsy showed a poorly differentiated tumor composed of basaloid cells arranged in solid nests with focal cribriform areas and necrosis. Immunohistochemically, the epithelial cells were positive for CD117 and CK7, whereas the myoepithelial component showed

BACKGROUND: Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and lethal type of head and neck cancer. Standard therapy involves surgery followed by radiation therapy. The majority of ACC has MYB overexpression and MYB-NFIB gene fusions, while Notch mutations are associated with aggressive behavior. Targeted therapies against these drivers or their downstream targets have been incompletely explored, especially in combination with radiation.
METHODS: cBioPortal was used for genomic and survival analyses. MYB, AKT, ATR, NOTCH, and NFIB expression was assessed via RNA-seq, qRT-PCR, and western blot. Radi

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is characterized by a strong propensity for perineural invasion (PNI), which complicates skull base evaluation and treatment planning. We report a case of buccal mucosal ACC demonstrating simultaneous proximal extension to the cavernous sinus and distal orbital involvement following infiltration of the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF). Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated continuous tumor propagation from the posterior superior alveolar nerve to the maxillary nerve (V2), with bidirectional spread originating from the PPF. Positron emission t

BACKGROUND: Primary thyroid adenoid cystic carcinoma (PT-ACC) is an extremely rare malignant tumor, accounting for a negligible proportion of thyroid malignancies. It predominantly affects men and lacks unified clinical diagnostic criteria, resulting in a high rate of misdiagnosis. Owing to the scarcity of reported cases in female patients, we present this case with detailed ultrasonographic findings, pathological features, and 18-month follow-up data to supplement clinical evidence in this underrepresented population and to aid differential diagnosis and treatment strategies.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the correlation between the posterior airway space (PAS) in children with adenoid hypertrophy and the acoustic impedance test indicators, in order to provide a reference for clinical assessment of middle ear dysfunction in these children.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 160 children diagnosed with adenoid hypertrophy in the otolaryngology department of our hospital from January 2024 to January 2025. They were divided into 4 groups based on the PAS value (Grade 1: >12 mm, Grade 2: 8-12 mm, Grade 3: 5-8 mm, Grade 4: ≤5 mm), with 40 cases in each group.

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the breast is an exceptionally rare malignancy, representing less than 0.1% of all breast cancers. Despite its triple-negative receptor profile, it typically follows an indolent course with excellent prognosis, distinct from the aggressive behavior usually seen in triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs).
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 48-year-old woman with a significant familial history of cancer who was diagnosed with breast AdCC. Imaging revealed a suspicious lesion in the left breast, and biopsy confirmed AdCC. Surgical resection

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the breast is a subtype of triple-negative breast cancer characterized by a distinct indolent behavior, with extremely rare lymphatic involvement and a late onset of distant metastasis occurring several years post-diagnosis. Due to its favorable prognosis, therapeutic guidelines include surgical resection with adjuvant radiotherapy, with no significant benefit of chemotherapy. The present study discusses the case of a 77-year-old female patient who presented with a right-sided breast mass. Biopsy confirmed a grade 2 AdCC transitioning to a higher grade in som
