The interpretation of the results in these experiments is difficult on account of the variations in the physical capacity of different strains of hemolytic streptococcus to agglutinate and absorb agglutinin. Even when the antigens for agglutination and absorption are standardized and sera are carefully titrated variations in agglutination occur with different strains and sera. Variations may occur because of differences in the titer of the immune sera employed. In a large series of reactions with the same sera and strains, errors in interpretation depending on these factors can be eliminated b

OBJECTIVE: To develop an advanced algorithm for correcting spurious RBC parameters in cold agglutination (CA) samples, and evaluate the performance of the algorithm and explore its clinical applications.
METHODS: RBC-specific antibodies were added to blood samples at different dilution ratios to simulate CA samples. On the difference of the RBC aggregates histogram between CA and normal, degree of aggregation and the corresponding RBC particle compensations were determined to calculate corrected values. Twenty clinical samples with microscopy-confirmed CA were analyzed and prewarmed at 37 °C

AIM: In this study, we aimed to discuss the clinical features, laboratory findings, treatment and outcome of seven cases of neurobrucellosis from a tertiary care center and review the available global literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The diagnosis of neurobrucellosis was established using the following criteria in our setting: (1) signs and symptoms of neurological infection with examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealing signs of meningitis, (2) isolation of Brucella spp. from blood and/or CSF and/or antibody titer ≥1:160 in serum using standard agglutination test (SAT) and/or the

Forty diarrhoeic stool samples of domestic animal handlers in a rural area of India were cultured and screened for detection of Campylobacter jejuni by Co-agglutination technique (CoA). Seven C. jejuni strains were isolated by culture and 6 faecal samples gave positive CoA test. The specificity and sensitivity for negative and positive culture were 96.9% and 85.7% respectively. This is first report of detection of Campylobacter enteritis of human beings using CoA technique directly from stool samples.

Twenty Mycobacterium avium/intracellulare strains of diverse origins and two reference strains of each of Schaefer's serotypes 1-21 were examined by immunodiffusion analysis. The results produced three distinct groups, which we have called A, B and C. Two of these, A and B, appear to be variants, perhaps subspecies of M. avium, and Group C is M. intracellulare. Within each group, rough variants, untypable by Schaefer's agglutination method, were found to be antigenically identical to the smooth parent strain by immunodiffusion analysis. The results obtained were essentially in agreement with t

Confirmatory diagnosis of clinical leptospirosis may be achieved by each hospital laboratory performing all-purpose bacteriological methods. Direct microscopic examination of blood may frequently demonstrate circulating leptospiras in the first few days of pyrexia. Leptospiras may be tentatively cultured from blood in the same initial period of illness, in fluid semisynthetic commercial media according to the original Ellinghausen medium. Sero-conversion for leptospira antibodies is constantly observed on two serum samples taken in the first few days of illness and ten days thereafter respecti

An upper limit of normal microagglutination titer for the Knoxville strain of Legionella pneumophila was determined by testing 830 sera. The upper limit of normal titer was found to be 8; however, we suggest that when applied to single serum specimens a titer of 32 be considered the lowest titer suggestive of infection (not necessarily disease).

Two new serovars in the leptospira Hebdomadis serogroup are described following parallel investigations by the "classical" comparative cross-agglutinin absorption test method and by a method derived from factor analysis. The serovar names nyanza with reference strain Kibos and dikkeni with reference strain Mannuthi are proposed.

A rural area in Virginia, in which clinical listeriosis of man and animals has been rare, was selected for this study. Vegetatino, which had died and remained in the fields over the winter, was collected and examined for Listeria monocytogenes by Gray's cold-holding procedure. Twelve fields were sampled and cultured, and eight strains of L. monocytogenes were isolated. Only two of the strains were pathogenic for the mouse. Compared with strains of L. monocytogenes isolated from listeric humans and animals in Virginia and the United States as a whole, these represented serotypes of low frequenc
