Seventeen patients with diagnosed sarcoidosis were administered a number of psychological instruments to assess anxiety, depression, life stress, and symptoms of agoraphobia and/or panic. The present study examined several dimensions of panic cognitions to test whether panic appraisals predict phobicity among panic sufferers. Hypochondriasis was assessed in 60 patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia using the Illness Behavior Questionnaire. Before treatment, IBQ hypochondriasis scores were similar to those of a group of hypochondriacal psychiatric patients. In patients who improved with treatment, significant reductions in somatic preoccupation, disease phobia, and disease conviction occurred. Kampo medicines have been used to treat patients with psychogenic disorders from ancient times. In the present report the cases are described of four patients with panic disorder successfully treated with Kampo medicines.
